Nitin Gadkari inaugurates India's 2nd longest cable-stayed bridge in K'taka

Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari on Monday inaugurated India's second-longest cable-stayed Sigandur bridge here.
While senior BJP leaders attended the event, none from the state cabinet attended it.
According to officials, the bridge constructed across Sharavathi backwaters between Ambaragodlu-Kalasavalli in Sagara taluk of this district has been built at a cost of Rs 472 crore.
This bridge is expected to significantly reduce the distance from Sagara to the villages around Sigandur, a place which is known for the Chowdeshwari temple.
The event was attended by Union Minister Pralhad Joshi, Senior BJP leader B S Yediyurappa, among others.
However, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah or any of his ministers did not attend the event.
Recently, Siddaramaiah had urged Gadkari to postpone the inauguration of the bridge and foundation stone laying ceremony of infrastructure projects at Sagara taluk in Shivamogga on July 14, stating that he was not informed in advance.
Citing his scheduled visit to Indi taluk in Vijayapura district, the CM in a letter to Gadkari had said, it would have been more appropriate for MoRTH to have consulted with the state government before scheduling such a programme, and requested him to instruct the officials in this regard.
Noting that an inauguration programme of various developmental schemes is already scheduled under his Chairmanship in Indi taluka of Vijayapura district on the same day, he said it would have been more appropriate for MoRTH to have consulted with the state government before scheduling the state-level programmes.

Bengaluru: Opposition BJP slammed the govt's decision to allot only nine acres of land in Hebbal for the Metro rail project instead of 45 acres required for constructing a multi-modal transit hub. Deputy chief minister DK Shivakumar and industries minister MB Patil discussed the issue and promised to prioritise the transit project. However, BMRCL made a U-turn by drastically reducing the land requirement from 45 to 9 acres. This was communicated during a high-level committee meeting chaired by chief secretary Shalini Rajneesh Monday. The committee has now directed BMRCL to approach KIADB to seek transfer of the reduced land parcel. Bangalore Central MP PC Mohan said, "The 45 acres of land in Hebbal is critical for multiple Metro lines (Phases 2A, 2B, 3 and 3A) and the suburban rail project. Any dilution of land to suit private builders will cripple Bengaluru's future mobility. Don't surrender to real-estate lobbies."

New Delhi: With the reporting of several instances of district magistrates being called for meetings and inspections by different departments on short notice, divisional commissioner Neeraj Semwal recently issued a circular stating that prior concurrence from the chief secretary was a must before such discussions. While accepting that inter-departmental coordination was essential, Semwal said such frequent and uncoordinated scheduling of meetings was adversely impacting the ability of DMs to perform their core responsibilities, including court work and other quasi-judicial functions, field inspections, grievance redressal, execution and supervision of departmental schemes, law and order functions, and monitoring of district-level developmental and revenue matters. Being the most important cog in the administrative wheel, which stays in direct touch with the public, BJP govt has involved DMs in several key projects. Wherever feasible, DMs should be allowed to participate through videoconferencing, especially in routine review or briefing meetings. "Departments are advised to coordinate among themselves to avoid repetitive meetings on overlapping issues. Consolidated meetings may be encouraged instead of department-specific, fragmented sessions," the circular pointed out. It advised that the departments must give an advance notice of a minimum of 48 hours to DMs for any meeting, which would help them plan their work accordingly or nominate competent officers for the meeting. "The necessity of the physical presence of DM must be clearly justified. If the agenda can be addressed by ADM or other senior officers, departments are encouraged to accept representation at that level," Semwal said.
