Long-awaited moment turns sour in copter crash
Her youngest son, Mohamad Hariz Akmal Mohd Jais, 21, said the excitement quickly turned to horror when the family received news that the AS355N helicopter had gone down just minutes after take-off.
Latipa, was among five police crew members injured in Thursday's helicopter crash.
"Mak was excited to fly in a helicopter for the first time in her career," Hariz said.
Just moments before take-off, she had snapped a selfie and sent it to the family's WhatsApp group, beaming with excitement over her maiden chopper flight in her decades-long service.
"She told us the day before how thrilled she was. On the day of the flight, she sent a photo of herself inside the helicopter. That was the last we heard before a policeman knocked on our door," said Hariz said when met at the lobby of Hospital Sultanah Aminah (HSA) today.
He recalled how the family — including his father and older brother — were stunned when informed that the helicopter had gone down, just a 10-minute drive from their quarters at the Tanjung Kupang Police Station.
"We rushed to HSA and waited anxiously at the emergency and trauma department," said the Polytechnic Ibrahim Sultan student.
Now on the road to recovery, Latipa remains under close medical supervision and has not yet been allowed to consume solid food.
"She's conscious, can speak, and is responding well. But doctors have advised only fluids — water and milk — for now to avoid complications with her internal injuries."
He added that his mother sustained a broken second ankle bone, a cracked left hip, and multiple bruises and cuts from the impact.
Latipa was one of five crew members aboard the AS355N helicopter that crashed near the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency jetty during a flypast in the multi-agency simulation held in conjunction with the Nuclear Security Detection Exercise Malaysia-Indonesia-Thailand-Singapore 2025.

JOHOR BARU: The police AS355N helicopter bearing registration number 9M-PHG, which recently crashed in Gelang Patah, is being remembered for its extensive service in critical and humanitarian missions. Since news of its crash in Sungai Pulai during a nuclear detection training exercise last Thursday, many have recalled their experiences with the aircraft, whether flying in it or witnessing its role in various operations. Police Air Operation Force commander Datuk Noor Sham Md Jani described the 28-year-old aircraft as 'small but mighty', highlighting its key contribution during the 2013 Lahad Datu intrusion by Sulu militants in Kampung Tanduo, Sabah. Noor Sham, who has logged nearly 7,000 flight hours on the AS355N, said he flew 9M-PHG to evacuate injured General Operations Force (GOF) personnel to hospitals in Sandakan and Lahad Datu during the armed standoff. "From day one of the incident, three AS355N helicopters, including 9M-PHG, and their crews were stationed in Lahad Datu for nearly three weeks before the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) aircraft arrived," he told Bernama. The helicopter was involved in an accident at 10.15am on Thursday during the Multilateral Nuclear Security Detection Exercise (MITSATOM) 2025 at the Gelang Patah Maritime Jetty. The exercise involved Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and Singapore. The Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) said the helicopter had departed from the Tanjung Kupang police station at 9.51am with five people on board, including the pilot. Noor Sham said 9M-PHG had just participated in the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition 2025 (Lima '25) and was one of the most frequently deployed aircraft for humanitarian missions, including disaster relief, flood evacuations, as well as traffic and crime surveillance. The aircraft also supported major national operations, such as aerial surveillance during the state visit of Chinese President Xi Jinping in April and during the enforcement of the Covid-19 Movement Control Order (MCO). "Its compact size made it ideal for command-and-control tasks. "We often used it for initial reconnaissance because of its ability to manoeuvre in tight areas, before deploying larger aircraft like the AW139 if needed," he said. In Johor, 9M-PHG was used to airlift three pregnant women, aged 22 to 33, from flood-isolated Orang Asli villages in Kahang, Kluang, to the hospital. Police force currently operates five AS355N helicopters, with two of them in Sabah, one in Sarawak and two in Peninsular Malaysia, including 9M-PHG. – Bernama

Police probe fake TikTok account impersonating Saifuddin offering aid
KUALA LUMPUR: Police have launched an investigation into a TikTok account impersonating Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail. Federal Criminal Investigation Department acting director Datuk Fadil Marsus confirmed that a report had been received against the TikTok account @saifuddin_nasution1, which is suspected to be fake and to have used artificial intelligence (AI) technology to offer financial assistance for certain purposes. "The case is being investigated under Section 504 of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998," he said in a statement today. Fadil also reminded the public to be cautious and not to trust any offers of financial assistance via social media too readily. He advised members of the public to always verify the authenticity of such information before taking any action. "The police also issue a stern warning that action will be taken against any party found to be involved in violating the law," he added. Earlier today, the Home Ministry's office alerted the public to the existence of several fake TikTok accounts impersonating Saifuddin. In a statement, the ministry said the fake accounts claimed that Saifuddin was offering financial assistance through a WhatsApp link shared in the biography section of the respective TikTok pages.

DNA testing on Taal Lake bones

In a statement, the DOJ said the remains were visibly identified and recovered from the lake bed. 'This discovery could represent a significant breakthrough in the ongoing investigation,' the DOJ said. The DOJ emphasized that the operations was supposedly a 'technical site assessment' by the Philippine Coast Guard. But with the discovery, the Philippine National Police Criminal Investigation and Detection Group or the National Bureau of Investigation will have to certify if the remains are indeed from a human being. DNA testing will also be conducted to determine if there is a match with any of the families of the missing individuals. 'While we proceed with caution and diligence, it offers renewed hope that we are closer to uncovering the truth and securing justice for the families of the missing,' the DOJ said. 'It was only a few meters from the shore. A CIDG team that was stationed on the lake shore, acting on information on where the possible jump-off point was, found the white sack not far from the shore. The DOJ and PCG teams were about 100 meters out and used a smaller boat to reach the shore to see what they had found.' 'The team decided to verify first whether it was human bones or not before releasing info. When CIDG made the determination, that was when we were comfortable to release the information,' the DOJ said. Authorities recovered the sack during the retrieval operations for the remains of missing cockfight enthusiasts (sabungero) allegedly dumped in Taal Lake, Batangas. Police Col. Geovanny Emerick Sibalo, provincial director of the Batangas police, told ABS-CBN News the sack was discovered about 10 meters from the shoreline.
