By: ABS CBN News Text Size: Members of the Philippine Coast Guard deploy in the waters of Taal Lake off Talisay town in Batangas province on Thursday ahead of an organized search for the remains of dozens of cockfighting aficionados missing since 2021 to 2022. —NIÑO JESUS ORBETA MANILA: The Department of Justice confirmed the retrieval of a sack containing what appears to be burnt human bones in Taal Lake during the initial search for the missing cockfight enthusiasts. In a statement, the DOJ said the remains were visibly identified and recovered from the lake bed. 'This discovery could represent a significant breakthrough in the ongoing investigation,' the DOJ said. The DOJ emphasized that the operations was supposedly a 'technical site assessment' by the Philippine Coast Guard. But with the discovery, the Philippine National Police Criminal Investigation and Detection Group or the National Bureau of Investigation will have to certify if the remains are indeed from a human being. DNA testing will also be conducted to determine if there is a match with any of the families of the missing individuals. 'While we proceed with caution and diligence, it offers renewed hope that we are closer to uncovering the truth and securing justice for the families of the missing,' the DOJ said. 'It was only a few meters from the shore. A CIDG team that was stationed on the lake shore, acting on information on where the possible jump-off point was, found the white sack not far from the shore. The DOJ and PCG teams were about 100 meters out and used a smaller boat to reach the shore to see what they had found.' 'The team decided to verify first whether it was human bones or not before releasing info. When CIDG made the determination, that was when we were comfortable to release the information,' the DOJ said. Authorities recovered the sack during the retrieval operations for the remains of missing cockfight enthusiasts (sabungero) allegedly dumped in Taal Lake, Batangas. Police Col. Geovanny Emerick Sibalo, provincial director of the Batangas police, told ABS-CBN News the sack was discovered about 10 meters from the shoreline. Julie Patidongan, one of the accused and a potential whistleblower in the case, earlier told media that over 100 victims were executed and dumped in the lake over suspicions of cheating in cockfight games. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? PDPA breach: Student data misuse could lead to jail, hefty fine
KUALA LUMPUR: Many private higher education institutions have been found sending marketing materials without first obtaining permission from students or their parents, breaching personal data laws. Personal Data Protection Department (JPDP) principal assistant director Mohamad Azrul Azmisaid such actions violate the Personal Data Protection Act (PDPA) 2010, which requires clear consent before personal data can be used or processed. Disclosing personal information such as phone numbers without consent can result in a fine of up to RM1 million or a three-year jail term, Kosmo! reported. "This clearly violates the first principle of the PDPA, which requires consent from the data owner before any use or processing of their personal data. "For instance, if a private higher education institution sends promotional offers via WhatsApp without permission, that already breaches the core principle of the PDPA. "Such offences may implicate not just the institution, but also third parties that supplied the data," he said. Azrul said if student data was obtained through a third party such as a data broker company, both parties could face prosecution. "Legal action will be taken if individuals or organisations continue to harass recipients after being warned. "However, if the sender persists, individuals may lodge an official complaint with JPDP accompanied by supporting evidence such as screenshots," he said. He added that many parents and students who receive unsolicited offers to further their studies are unaware they can file a direct complaint with JPDP. "The complaints process begins with lodging a report directly with the sender. "If the harassment continues after a warning, the complaint can be escalated to JPDP, which will then issue a Section 43 Notice," he said. The public may submit complaints to JPDP through its website at if their personal data has been misused. Meanwhile, Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Shah Alam Faculty of Information Science associate professor Dr Muhamad Khairulnizam Zaini said several key factors often lead to data leaks. He said although every case requires specific investigation, breaches are commonly caused by two main factors: unauthorised access and weaknesses in system security. "Leaks can occur when someone without permission infiltrates a system and accesses confidential data, whether from inside or outside the organisation," he said. According to Kosmo!, many private higher education institutions have been using the personal data of SPM leavers to send unsolicited offers of admission, raising concerns over data privacy violations.

Housewife is arrested for threatening hairdresser
Published on: Sunday, July 13, 2025 Published on: Sun, Jul 13, 2025 By: Amir Anuar Text Size: Tawau District Police Chief ACP Jasmin Hussin TAWAU: A housewife has been arrested for allegedly threatening to smash a female hairdresser's head and seize her mobile phone. She was believed to have made the threat via a social media messaging application. Tawau District Police Chief ACP Jasmin Hussin said the 38-year-old local was detained at Kampung Hidayat Batu 4, Jalan Apas, here, at 2.45pm on Friday. 'A hairdresser lodged a complaint on Jan 3, last year, claiming she received a threatening message via WhatsApp,' he said, Saturday. Jasmin said the arrest was made by a team from the District Criminal Investigation Division (BSJND) in front of an unnumbered house, where a mobile phone was also confiscated. According to the police report, the suspect had allegedly sent a message stating, 'Di mana-mana aku jumpa binimu, aku kasi pecah kepalanya (Wherever I see your wife, I'll smash her head).' 'The case is being investigated under Section 507 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation through online communication, which carries a sentence of up to two years in prison upon conviction,' said Jasmin. In a separate case, police arrested a local youth suspected of trespassing into a home and attempting to assault a woman in her rented room in town last Sunday. Jasmin said the 20-year-old suspect was apprehended by the Strike Team from Tawau Police Station at 10.15pm on Thursday at a car park in the town area. The arrest followed a police report lodged by the alleged victim, a 25-year-old female tenant who was traumatised and concerned for her safety. 'According to the complainant, the incident occurred while she was asleep in her room when the suspect allegedly broke in, covered her mouth and attempted to rob her. 'She was startled by the suspect's actions and immediately woke up, screamed and struggled, managing to push the door open, which caused the suspect to be thrown out of the room,' he said. Initial investigations revealed that the victim did not suffer any losses or have any valuables stolen, as her swift reaction thwarted the suspect's intentions. Jasmin added that police reviewed CCTV footage and carried out intelligence work, which led to the suspect's arrest. A cap, sling bag and a pair of slippers believed to have been used by the suspect were also seized. The case is being investigated under Section 448 of the Penal Code for house trespass. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
