David Stearns praises Pete Alonso for taking game to ‘another level' as Mets future remains uncertain

Pete Alonso has taken his game offensively to 'another level.'
That assessment was provided Friday by Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns, who was asked about the possibility he would engage in contract extension talks with Alonso's camp during the season.

Alonso, after a stalemate in negotiations that lasted deep into last offseason, returned to the Mets on a two-year contract worth $54 million that includes an opt out after this season.
Alonso's .982 OPS as play began Friday ranked fifth in MLB, behind Aaron Judge, Shohei Ohtani, Cal Raleigh and Freddie Freeman.
'I am not going to touch any sort of contract talk discussion,' Stearns said before the Mets faced the Rays at Citi Field.

'But he's having a tremendous year, and he's been an enormous offensive component of our team. I think our lineup now as a whole is functioning at a real high level and as we envisioned. Pete has been right in the middle of it all since Day 1. He's really taken his offensive game to another level, and it's been fun to see.'
Alonso began play with 20 RBIs in June, and a 1.288 OPS.

Jose Siri had a setback in his rehab from a fractured left tibia, according to Stearns, and has been shut down from baseball activities.
Stearns said recent imaging determined the bone in Siri's leg wasn't healing in the manner the team had hoped.

Siri will be shut down for 'a couple of weeks' and receive further imaging to determine if he can restart his progression.

Siri was injured after fouling a ball off his shin April 12.
Jesse Winker is still 'multiple weeks away' from a minor league rehab assignment, according to Stearns.
The veteran outfielder has been sidelined with an oblique strain since May 5.
Brooks Raley could begin a minor league rehab assignment within the next week, according to Stearns.

The left-handed reliever, who is returning from Tommy John surgery, will likely need the entire month of his rehab assignment before he is ready, which would place his potential return shortly after the All-Star break.
The Mets re-signed Raley in April to a one-year contract that holds a club option for 2026.

On Friday the 13th, the Mets began play as the only MLB team with four players who had at least 13 homers (Alonso, Brandon Nimmo, Francisco Lindor and Juan Soto).
It marked the first time in franchise history the Mets had four players with as many homers through 70 games.

The Los Angeles Angels announced that manager Ron Washington will stay on medical leave for the remainder of the 2025 season with an unspecified medical issue. Washington, 73, has been sidelined for the last week after he experienced shortness of breath at the end of the Angels' series against the New York Yankees that ended on June 19. Following that series, Washington flew back to Southern California and was placed on medical leave after he underwent a series of tests. Washington is currently the oldest manager in MLB. Washington was hired by the Angels prior to the 2024 season, and is 103-140 in 243 games with the team. He was the manager of the Texas Rangers for eight seasons (2007-2014) and had a 664-611 record with them. He led the Rangers to back-to-back World Series appearances in 2010 and 2011 before stepping down abruptly in September 2014. The Angels are 40-41 on the season, and have a 7-4 record with Montgomery at the helm. This is Montgomery's first time as an MLB manager in his coaching career. He joined the Angels as their director of player personnel for the 2020 season and became the team's bench coach in 2021. The Angels lost 15-9 to the Washington Nationals on Friday and will look to rebound when they play the Nationals in the second game of their three-game series at 9:38 p.m. ET on Saturday. Eagles rookie Ty Robinson receives another positive endorsement
The buzz keeps building as an Eagles rookie earns more praise from the media. This is probably a safe guess. Since you've watched the Philadelphia Eagles all your life, those of you who also love the college game have probably kept one eye on the Big Ten. These days, that's certainly harder than ever as it's now two schools short of becoming 'The Big 20'. Even with all of that being said, your Pennsylvania affiliations more than likely kept you from watching a ton of Nebraska football. Tom Osborne left a long time ago, and if we're being honest, most Eagles fans lost track of Matt Rhule after Philadelphia beat his Carolina Panthers in Week 5 of the 2021 season. The 2025 NFL Draft brought about some changes. Philadelphia drafted a Nebraska Cornhusker in Round 4, and though discipline tells us not to put too much stock in a rookie until he has played meaningful snaps, it's hard not to be excited. This guy's nickname is the 'Vanilla Gorilla' for Heaven's sake. ESPN's Tim McManus names Ty Robinson's selection as the Eagles' most underrated move They say offense sells tickets, and defense wins championships. One of the most significant talking points we've heard all offseason is the number of players lost from the defensive roster. Frankly, that take seems overstated. One of those weapons is rookie Ty Robinson, the aforementioned 'Vanilla Gorilla'. Gosh, it's easy to fall in love with that nickname, and it's easy to love what Tim McManus said about him. Tim is ESPN's Eagles insider, and he recently participated in an NFC East roundtable. Once the topic turned to each team's most underrated move, Robinson earned his shout-out. "Drafting DT Ty Robinson in the fourth round (was Philly's most underrated move). With minimal contact during OTA and minicamp practices, the offseason program isn't exactly conducive to properly evaluating linemen. But that hasn't stopped some of his new teammates from speaking highly of the Nebraska product. "That boy is fire, I ain't going to lie," DT Jalen Carter said. "He's moving good. He's a big boy. ... I think he's going to have a big impact this season." Robinson's NCAA career ended with 134 tackles, including 27 for loss. He also racked up a dozen sacks and 12 pass breakups. He earned Third-team All-Big Ten honors in his swan song with the Cornhuskers last season. This next part, however, is the best part of the story. Rhule gave him a single-digit jersey number, an honor reserved for the tough players on his team who have earned his respect. Ladies and gentlemen, we all loved Milton Williams and are sorry he's gone, but Ty Robinson isn't going to settle into this defense just fine.
