Mass. lawmaker facing charges of drunken driving, property damage after arrest near State House

A Massachusetts lawmaker is facing charges after police say he was arrested on Beacon Hill near the State House in Boston early Wednesday morning. State Rep. John J. Lawn was arrested around 1:45 a.m. on charges of operating under the influence of liquor and leaving the scene of property damage, a Boston Police Department spokesman told Boston 25 News. Lawn is a Democrat who represents the state's 10th Middlesex District, which includes the communities of Newton, Waltham, and Watertown. Lawn also chairs the Committee on Health Care Financing. The Massachusetts Republican Party issued a statement in response to Lawn's arrest, calling for his resignation. 'Wednesday's arrest is another example of Beacon Hill Democrats using their titles to try and avoid punishment. By declaring himself a lawmaker at the time of his arrest, it's clear Rep. Lawn sought to escape the consequences of his actions,' MassGOP spokesman Mark Steffen said. He should resign and offer the residents of Watertown the chance to elect a new representative who doesn't ask officers to look the other way when he allegedly breaks the law." Boston 25 News has reached out to Lawn's office for comment on the incident. Boston police didn't immediately share additional details on the arrest. An investigation remains ongoing. Conner Smith charged with misdemeanor traffic offense after fatal car accident

Country singer Conner Smith has been charged with a misdemeanor traffic citation a month after he was involved in a car accident that left one person dead. The "Country in the Clouds" singer, 24, was driving a Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck in Nashville on June 8 when he struck 77-year-old Dorothy Dobbins as she was crossing the roadway, the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department said at the time. Dobbins, who lived nearby, was subsequently "transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where she died," according to police. Nashville police said in a press release Thursday that Smith has since been charged with failure to yield the right of way resulting in death, which is a Class A misdemeanor. The "Country in the Clouds" singer, who was accompanied by his attorney, was issued the state misdemeanor citation at the Traffic Division office on Thursday night just after 6 p.m., according to the press release. Police stated that an investigation into the incident "shows Dobbins was crossing 3rd Avenue North near Van Buren Street in a marked crosswalk when she was hit by the pickup truck." "After Dobbins was struck, witnesses reported Smith ran to her to render aid until [Nashville Fire Department] paramedics arrived," the press release continued. "Dobbins was rushed to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where she died. Officers found no evidence of impairment or distracted driving on the part of Smith." Smith's attorney Worrick G Robinson addressed his client's citation in a statement shared with "Good Morning America," saying that Smith is "incredibly grateful to the MNPD for their time and efforts to carefully investigate this tragic accident and has continued to cooperate at all times." "His thoughts remain with Ms. Dobbins' family, and he remains committed to honoring her memory with compassion by supporting efforts to improve pedestrian safety and help prevent future tragedies," Robinson added. Since the accident, changes have been made to improve safety around the crosswalk, including the installment of signs and the removal of a tree that was obstructing the crosswalk's view. In an obituary published by The Tennessean on June 15, Dobbins, known as "Dot" to loved ones, was remembered by family and friends as a grandmother and a "respected attorney and advocate" who "spent over four decades championing family law, domestic violence prevention, and anti-violence initiatives." On Friday, Smith took to Instagram to share a statement about the accident and said that his heart is "broken in a way I've never experienced." "Not a day has gone by that I haven't grieved, prayed, and mourned for Ms. Dobbins and her family," he wrote. "I still struggle to fully process the weight of it all." He continued, "I ask that you continue to lift the Dobbins family up in prayer by name, asking for God's peace to surround them each day." The singer added that he has made the decision to "step away from shows" over the past few weeks "out of respect for everyone involved and to give space for grieving." "I have always found that making music and playing shows is a place of healing for me -- but for this moment, it was important for me to take that time away," he said. He ended his message by saying that he's leaned on God during this time. "Through tragedy, I have learned that God is more faithful than I could have ever known before," he said.

Mystery woman found dead in New Hampshire finally identified after more than 50 years

Woman found dead in New Hampshire identified after more than 50 years Woman found dead in New Hampshire identified after more than 50 years Woman found dead in New Hampshire identified after more than 50 years A woman found dead more than 50 years ago in the woods of Marlborough, New Hampshire, has finally been identified. Now investigators want to know exactly what happened to Nancy Gale Erickson. The previously unidentified body was discovered in a wooded area off Route 124 on April 16, 1974. Detectives believed the mystery woman had died in the late fall of 1973. New Hampshire authorities said Wednesday that forensic testing helped them to identify the young woman as Erickson. "After years of work on this case, putting a name to Nancy Gale Erickson is incredibly meaningful. It's more than solving a mystery — it's restoring her identity and honoring the life she lived. She was never forgotten," New Hampshire State Police Detective Sgt. Kelly LaPointe said in a statement. "We're deeply grateful to everyone whose efforts made this possible. Now the focus turns to understanding how and why she died." Erickson was 21 years old when she disappeared. Attorney General John Formella's office said she was born and raised in New York but moved to Tampa, Florida, to be with her mother and siblings. She was working as a nurse at a hospital there but suddenly left the state in 1973 with only a duffel bag, and her siblings said that her disappearance may have been due to "the emotional toll of her nursing work." Investigators say Erickson was then arrested in Bellows Fall, Vermont, for stealing a car. On Oct. 30, 1973, she abruptly left her job at the Brattleboro Retreat and was never heard from again. Authorities are now asking anyone who might have known Erickson to contact them. They are looking to speak with former employees of the Brattleboro Retreat, people who lived at the Community House in 1973, students who attended Corning Community College in New York between 1971 and 1972, and staff members at Tampa General Hospital.
