CPM calls for a nationwide protest against SIR in Bihar

NEW DELHI: The Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPM) on Saturday called for a nationwide protest on August 8 against SIR.
A statement by the Polit Bureau of the party alleged that the Election Commission (EC) is biased in favour of the BJP-led government and complicit with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) in implementing the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls in Bihar.
'The EC, which until now had acted in favour of the BJP-led government, has now become complicit in implementing the RSS or Sangh Parivar agenda. This (SIR) attack on democratic rights, which is sought to be extended across the country, must not be allowed. It is to be noted that even some of the alliance partners of the BJP, like the TDP, have voiced their concerns about the SIR. The CPM calls for protests to be held throughout the country on 8th August 2025 against this anti-democratic exercise of the EC,' read a statement issued by the Polit Bureau of the party on Saturday.
The party further said that the Commission wants to extend this exercise to the entire country-- in the name of revising the electoral rolls-- and is appropriating the authority to verify the citizenship of voters, which is outside its constitutional remit.
'Under the baseless pretext of weeding out foreigners from the electoral rolls, they are disenfranchising vast sections of minorities and other select groups. The entire process is fraught with various violations, and even the right to vote guaranteed by the Constitution may be denied to many," the party said.
"The NRC exercise, which was widely opposed by the people before the Covid pandemic, is sought to be enforced surreptitiously through the back door,' the party added.

SC dismisses plea for delimitation exercise in Andhra Pradesh,Telangana

The Supreme Court on Friday dismissed a plea for conducting delimitation exercise in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana for increasing the assembly seats in both the states.A bench of Justices Surya Kant and N Kotiswar Singh rejected the contention of alleged discrimination against the two states, saying provisions dealing with delimitation in states were different when compared to UTs. It held that the exclusion of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana from the delimitation notification issued for the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir was not arbitrary or discriminatory and hence constitutional. The top court dismissed the plea filed by K Purushottam Reddy who sought directions to the Centre to operationalise Section 26 of the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act which deals with delimitation of the assembly constituencies in both the states. Reddy has contended that delimiting the assembly and parliamentary constituencies of only the newly minted Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, with the exclusion of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, created an unreasonable classification and was, therefore, unconstitutional. The top court said section 26 of the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act of 2014 was subject to Article 170 of the Constitution and as per which delimitation exercise can be held only after the first census conducted after top court said allowing the plea for fresh delimitation exercise will open the floodgates of litigation from other states seeking conduct of such exercise.

Bihar assembly adjourned following oppositions' ruckus over SIR

Patna, July 25 (UNI): The Bihar Assembly was adjourned until lunch today after opposition members staged a protest over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list. As soon as the House convened, CPI-ML legislator Satyadev Ram raised the SIR issue, sparking an uproar. Opposition MLAs from the RJD, Congress, and Left parties rushed to the well of the House during Question Hour, shouting slogans and attempting to overturn tables. Despite repeated calls for order, Speaker Nand Kishore Yadav was forced to adjourn the session. The opposition MLAs, dressed in black, had disrupted proceedings with their slogans, making it impossible for the Speaker to restore order. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar criticized the opposition's conduct, dismissing their protest over SIR as irrelevant and highlighting his government's welfare achievements. He questioned the logic of consistently wearing black attire and urged opposition leaders to introspect, pointing out that "such coordinated dress code from Tejashwi Prasad Yadav and other opposition members was unprecedented in Bihar politics." Despite repeated warnings by the Speaker to sit down and maintain order, opposition members continued to storm into the well, jostling with marshals and disrupting the reporters' gallery. The chaos persisted until the Speaker adjourned the assembly for lunch within five minutes of the disruption. On the opposition protest, BJP MP Manan Kumar Mishra said, "This is very unfortunate. The Election Commission has taken a very good reformative step, and it is a significant step..." UNI RS AAB

‘My mistake': Rahul Gandhi on caste census delay in Congress-ruled states, says ‘correcting it now'

Rahul Gandhi admitted that not conducting a caste census was his fault and vowed to rectify it in Congress-ruled states. Speaking at the Bhagidari Nyay Mahasammelan conference, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha was quoted as saying, It was my mistake and not of Congress that we couldn't get caste census done earlier; I am correcting that now." He added, 'we will conduct a caste census, X-ray of population in all Congress-ruled states.' Gandhi also condemned the RSS and BJP for neglecting the contributions of the OBC community. 'RSS, BJP have deliberately erased history of OBCs, who are productive force of country,' Gandhi said.
