CPI(M) Polit Bureau recalls V.S. Achuthanandan's ‘indelible impact on Kerala politics'

The Polit Bureau of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) has expressed its deep grief at the passing of V.S. Achuthanandan, an outstanding leader and veteran of the communist movement. He was a former member of the Polit Bureau. In a statement, the Polit Bureau termed Mr. Achuthanandan an able organiser who spearheaded various struggles in Kerala, recalling his first brush with the trade union movement by organising the coir workers at the Aspinwal Company, where he had started working. 'Custodial torture' 'He joined the Communist Party in 1940. P. Krishna Pillai assigned him work among agricultural workers in Kuttanad who were subjected to terrible exploitation by landlords. During the Punnapra-Vayalar uprising against the Diwan of Travancore, he had to go underground. After being arrested, he was subjected to severe custodial torture,' the statement said. It noted that Mr. Achuthanandan was elected to the State Committee of the United Communist Party in 1956 and to its National Council in 1958. 'He was the last of the surviving 32 members of the National Council left to form the CPI(M).' 'He served as the secretary of the Kerala State Committee of the CPI(M) from 1980 to 1991. He was elected to the Central Committee of the Party in 1964 and became a member of the Polit Bureau in 1985. He was relieved from the Central Committee, of which he had become a special invitee, due to age, in 2022.' 'Welfare of working class' 'Mr. Achuthanandan was elected to the Kerala Assembly seven terms. He served as Leader of the Opposition for two terms and was the Chief Minister from 2006 to 2011. His tenure as Chief Minister was marked by several legislative and administrative measures for the welfare of the working people,' the statement said. 'During his eight-and-a-half-decade-long association with the party, Mr. Achuthanandan witnessed the steady growth of the communist movement in Kerala as a public speaker. He mastered the art of communicating directly with the audience. Known for his austere lifestyle and unwavering commitment to social justice, Mr. Achuthanandan has left an indelible mark on Kerala politics. In his death, the party and the communist movement have suffered a grievous loss,' it said.

Outstanding leader: CPI(M) pays rich tributes to VS Achuthanandan

New Delhi, Jul 21 (PTI) The CPI(M) on Monday expressed profound grief at the demise of former Kerala chief minister and veteran party leader V S Achuthanandan. Achuthanandan, one of India's most respected Communist leaders and a key figure in Kerala's political history, passed away on Monday at the age of 101. The veteran leader died at a private hospital in Thiruvananthapuram while undergoing treatment following a cardiac arrest. The CPI(M) in a statement called Achuthanandan an outstanding leader and a veteran of the Communist movement. 'The Polit Bureau of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) dips its red banner in salute to V S Achuthanandan. It conveys its heartfelt condolences to his wife, son and daughter," the CPI(M) said in the statement. Fondly called VS, Achuthanandan was an able organiser who spearheaded various struggles in Kerala. His first brush with the trade union movement came when he organised the coir workers at the Aspinwall Company where he had started working, the CPI(M) said. 'In 1940, when he was just 17 years old, VS joined the Communist party. Krishna Pillai assigned him work among the agricultural workers in Kuttanad, who were subjected to terrible exploitation by the landlords. 'During the Punnapra-Vayalar uprising against the Diwan of Travancore, VS had to go underground. After being arrested, he was subjected to severe custodial torture," the CPI(M) said. VS was elected to the state committee of the united Communist party in 1956 and to its national council in 1958. He was the last of the 32 surviving members of the national council who left to form the Communist Party of India (Marxist). He served as the secretary of the Kerala state committee of the CPI(M) from 1980 to 1991. CPM calls for a nationwide protest against SIR in Bihar

NEW DELHI: The Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPM) on Saturday called for a nationwide protest on August 8 against SIR. A statement by the Polit Bureau of the party alleged that the Election Commission (EC) is biased in favour of the BJP-led government and complicit with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) in implementing the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls in Bihar. 'The EC, which until now had acted in favour of the BJP-led government, has now become complicit in implementing the RSS or Sangh Parivar agenda. This (SIR) attack on democratic rights, which is sought to be extended across the country, must not be allowed. It is to be noted that even some of the alliance partners of the BJP, like the TDP, have voiced their concerns about the SIR. The CPM calls for protests to be held throughout the country on 8th August 2025 against this anti-democratic exercise of the EC,' read a statement issued by the Polit Bureau of the party on Saturday. The party further said that the Commission wants to extend this exercise to the entire country-- in the name of revising the electoral rolls-- and is appropriating the authority to verify the citizenship of voters, which is outside its constitutional remit. 'Under the baseless pretext of weeding out foreigners from the electoral rolls, they are disenfranchising vast sections of minorities and other select groups. The entire process is fraught with various violations, and even the right to vote guaranteed by the Constitution may be denied to many," the party said. "The NRC exercise, which was widely opposed by the people before the Covid pandemic, is sought to be enforced surreptitiously through the back door,' the party added.

CPM backs ‘Silence for Gaza'; urges digital protest against Israeli attacks

NEW DELHI: The Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPM) on Saturday urged people across the country to actively participate in 'digital protest' against Israel; switch off mobile phones for 30 minutes every day and abstain from posting, liking, or commenting on any social media platform during the protest period. Through a statement issued by the Polit Bureau, the party endorsed the global call 'Silence for Gaza', which urges people to switch off their mobile phones for half an hour everyday – from 21.00 to 21.30 local time – as a symbolic act of solidarity. A recently released UN report, From Economy of Occupation to Economy of Genocide, details how various multinational corporations are complicit in Israel's assault on Gaza. "The sinister role of these corporations must be exposed and they must be held accountable to the people," read the statement. The party said that these corporations feed off our digital footprints, even as they enable genocide. "Shutting off our mobile phones for half an hour each day at the designated time is a small but powerful act of digital disruption, a strike against the surveillance capitalism that bankrolls Israel's genocide and apartheid," the party added. The CPM said that that by joining the global 'Silence for Gaza' campaign, it stands with the Palestinian people and against the brutal, genocidal assault unleashed by Israel. "Let this collective silence be a defiant refusal to be complicit, and a powerful assertion that the voices against war crimes will not be silenced," said the Polit Bureau.
