Krishna river board to release 4tmc ft water to Andhra Pradesh, 10tmc ft for Telangana

Time of India22-05-2025
Vijayawada: After elaborating discussions with both Andhra Pradesh and Telangana govts, the Krishna River Management Board (KRMB) has decided to release water to meet the drinking water needs in both the Telugu states.
However, AP will get just 4tmc ft of water against its indent for release of 10tmc ft of water.
Interestingly, Telangana is getting its full quota of 10.26tmc ft as per its indent. In fact, Telangana raised its objection to release 10tmc ft of water to AP in view of the shortage of water in both the major inter-state projects.
The three-member committee of KRMB studied the water availability in both Srisailam and Nagarjuna Sagar projects and lowered the minimum draw down level (MDDL) in Nagarjuna Sagar to 505ft from the 510ft, while maintaining the MDDL at 800ft in Srisailam project in view of the requirements.
The team found about 8tmc water available in Srisailam and another 12.79tmc in Nagarjuna Sagar at MDDL. Though 21.21tmc water is available in two projects, 4tmc have been deducted as evaporation loss and another 2tmc ft of water kept was reserve cushion to meet emergency needs.
Subsequently, the three-men committee made recommendation to give 4tmc to AP and 10.26 tmc to Telangana from the available pool of 14.2tmc.

AP water resources minister Nimmala Rama Naidu said that that water has been released from the Nagarjuna Sagar right canal through the KRMB from Thursday afternoon to fill the reservoirs. He mentioned that 447 drinking water reservoirs in the Palnadu, Guntur, Bapatla, and Prakasam districts under the Sagar right canal will be filled with water. He directed officials from the irrigation, revenue, and RWS departments to coordinate and ensure that the water is used solely for drinking purposes.
The minister clarified that after three crop holidays, irrigation water was provided to the Nagarjuna Sagar ayacut during the last season, resulting in abundant crop yields. He said that they have also secured water to meet drinking water needs.

Rain takes pause, brings major respite to Vidarbha

1 2 3 4 Nagpur: After three days of relentless downpour, rains took a significant pause across most parts of Vidarbha on Friday, providing a much-needed breather to residents. The skies largely remained dry on July 11, helping water levels recede and enabling relief operations to pick up pace in flood-affected areas. In Nagpur, which witnessed incessant rain between July 7 and 9 leading to waterlogging in several localities, the municipal corporation swung into action to prevent outbreak of waterborne and vector-borne diseases. NMC officials began extensive surveys in areas resembling flood-affected zones. So far, the health department has surveyed 1,762 houses across 10 zones, including Laxminagar, Dharampeth, Hanuman Nagar, Dhantoli, Nehru Nagar, Gandhibagh, Satranjipura, Lakadganj, Ashinagar, and Mangalwari. Seventeen medical teams were deployed, and water samples from 15 locations were tested and found safe. Chlorine drops were distributed in 747 houses, and ORS sachets were provided to 130 households as preventive measures. Meanwhile, in Amravati, residents experienced clear skies after four days of continuous rain. "No rain was recorded in any of the 14 talukas, which has brought relief, especially for farmers who are eager to resume sowing operations," said an official from the agriculture department. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like So sánh mức trượt giá: Hợp đồng tương lai (CFD) Bitcoin vs Ethereum IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo In Chandrapur, the rains subsided on Thursday, with the district recording a modest average of 24.6mm over 24 hours. However, the aftermath of heavy rainfall continues, particularly in Bramhapuri taluka and other severely affected regions like Gondpipri, Nagbhid, Saoli, and Pombhurna. Guardian minister Dr Ashok Uike ordered immediate damage assessments and directed officials to remain on high alert. A 24x7 War Room has been established for monitoring relief efforts, with provisions for food, potable water, medicines, and rescue equipment. District collector Vinay Gowda GC visited flood-affected villages on Thursday, including Tok in Pombhurna taluka, which remains partially waterlogged due to the overflowing Wainganga river. Reports indicate considerable crop losses, especially of cotton and soybean. Pregnant women from Tok village have already been shifted to Pombhurna rural hospital as a precaution. Elsewhere in Vidarbha, rainfall recorded on July 11 remained negligible or zero in most cities, as per official data. For example, Nagpur and Amravati recorded no rainfall in the past 24 hours. Only Washim (4mm) and Yavatmal (4mm) saw minimal showers, while Bramhapuri and Chandrapur remained largely dry.

Irrigation projects in AP and Telangana overflows amid rains

Projects across the Telugu states are grappling with significant flooding as a result of heavy rainfall in upstream regions, leading to sustained high water levels in the Krishna and Godavari rivers. The recent deluge has caused numerous irrigation projects to reach their full capacity. At the Tungabhadra Dam, which is experiencing substantial inflows, the situation remains critical. With the dam currently registering an inflow of 42,290 cusecs and an outflow of 40,231 cusecs, authorities have opened 11 gates to manage water release downstream. The dam's full water level is set at 1,633 feet, with the current level at 1,624.86 feet. The Sunkesula Project in Kurnool district has also reached its full capacity, with officials releasing water to the Srisailam reservoir via 13 gates. The Sunkesula reservoir has a total capacity of 1.20 TMC and currently holds 0.68 TMC. Srisailam Dam continues to see heavy inflow, prompting operational adjustments to manage water levels. Presently, three gates are being raised by 10 feet to release water downstream. The inflow into the Srisailam reservoir is recorded at 148,696 cusecs, with an outflow slightly higher at 148,734 cusecs. The reservoir's maximum capacity is 215 TMC, with the current storage level at 203 TMC; the water level stands at 882.80 feet against a full capacity level of 885 feet. The release of water from the Srisailam project has contributed to flooding in the Nagarjunasagar project, which is now receiving an inflow of 118,167 cusecs while managing an outflow of 5,612 cusecs. Currently, the water level in the Nagarjunasagar reservoir is at 543.60 feet, significantly below the full level of 590 feet. Additionally, the Kadem project in Nirmal district is encountering severe flooding, prompting officials to open one gate for water release. The project's maximum level is 700 feet, with the current level at 693 feet, reflecting an inflow of 4,433 cusecs and an outflow of 4,346 cusecs. As the situation evolves, officials continue to monitor water levels closely to mitigate the impact of the floods in the region.

Heavy Rain Forecast for Andhra Pradesh

The Meteorological Department has announced that the Telugu states are expected to experience moderate to heavy rainfall over the next three days, owing to the influence of the southwest monsoon, a low-pressure system, and an associated trough. The forecast includes the likelihood of thunderstorms, accompanied by lightning and gusty winds. Currently, a trough extends from the northeast Arabian Sea to a surface circulation linked to a low-pressure area over the Ganges in West Bengal, reaching altitudes of between 4.5 km and 7.6 km above sea level across regions including South Gujarat, North Central Maharashtra, Vidarbha, South Chhattisgarh, and South Odisha, as well as over Andhra Pradesh and Yanam. Lower tropospheric southwest and westerly winds are contributing to the expected weather conditions. In North Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam, light to moderate rain or thundershowers are predicted to occur at a few locations on Tuesday and Wednesday, with thunderstorms likely generating winds of 40-50 km/h. Similar conditions are expected on Thursday, albeit with a slight decrease in rain intensity. South Coastal Andhra Pradesh will see light to moderate rains or thundershowers at one or two locations on Tuesday and Wednesday, with thunderstorms expected to produce strong winds of 40-50 km/h. On Thursday, the pattern will remain consistent, with light to moderate rain anticipated and high winds continuing. In Rayalaseema, light to moderate rain is forecasted at one or two places throughout Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, alongside strong winds reaching speeds of 40-50 km/h. Residents are advised to remain vigilant and prepare for potentially severe weather conditions.
