Nagpur: After three days of relentless downpour, rains took a significant pause across most parts of Vidarbha on Friday, providing a much-needed breather to residents. The skies largely remained dry on July 11, helping water levels recede and enabling relief operations to pick up pace in flood-affected areas.
In Nagpur, which witnessed incessant rain between July 7 and 9 leading to waterlogging in several localities, the municipal corporation swung into action to prevent outbreak of waterborne and vector-borne diseases. NMC officials began extensive surveys in areas resembling flood-affected zones.
So far, the health department has surveyed 1,762 houses across 10 zones, including Laxminagar, Dharampeth, Hanuman Nagar, Dhantoli, Nehru Nagar, Gandhibagh, Satranjipura, Lakadganj, Ashinagar, and Mangalwari.
Seventeen medical teams were deployed, and water samples from 15 locations were tested and found safe. Chlorine drops were distributed in 747 houses, and ORS sachets were provided to 130 households as preventive measures.
Meanwhile, in Amravati, residents experienced clear skies after four days of continuous rain. "No rain was recorded in any of the 14 talukas, which has brought relief, especially for farmers who are eager to resume sowing operations," said an official from the agriculture department.

In Chandrapur, the rains subsided on Thursday, with the district recording a modest average of 24.6mm over 24 hours. However, the aftermath of heavy rainfall continues, particularly in Bramhapuri taluka and other severely affected regions like Gondpipri, Nagbhid, Saoli, and Pombhurna. Guardian minister Dr Ashok Uike ordered immediate damage assessments and directed officials to remain on high alert. A 24x7 War Room has been established for monitoring relief efforts, with provisions for food, potable water, medicines, and rescue equipment.
District collector Vinay Gowda GC visited flood-affected villages on Thursday, including Tok in Pombhurna taluka, which remains partially waterlogged due to the overflowing Wainganga river. Reports indicate considerable crop losses, especially of cotton and soybean. Pregnant women from Tok village have already been shifted to Pombhurna rural hospital as a precaution.
Elsewhere in Vidarbha, rainfall recorded on July 11 remained negligible or zero in most cities, as per official data. For example, Nagpur and Amravati recorded no rainfall in the past 24 hours. Only Washim (4mm) and Yavatmal (4mm) saw minimal showers, while Bramhapuri and Chandrapur remained largely dry.

Himachal Pradesh: Orphaned in flash flood, 11-month-old gets world as cradle
Nikita had a miraculous escape on the night of June 30 when a flashflood, triggered by a cloudburst, struck Talwara village in HP's Mandi district. KULLU: It does take a village to raise a child. An 11-month-old baby was left all alone when her parents and grandmother were swept away in flashfloods following a cloudburst in Mandi district on June 30. What followed the tragedy was a heartwarming tale of a community turning into a family. Orphaned, yet surrounded by love, little Nikita still looks for her mother in the crowd of familiar and unfamiliar faces but gentle hands and kind eyes try to fill the void. There was no dearth of hearts reaching out to adopt her but Nikita's relatives decided Sunday, after her parents' last rites - she would live with her paternal aunt, Kirna Devi. Several schools have also called up the family, offering to enrol Nikita, who turns one on Aug 14, for free when the time comes. Nikita had a miraculous escape on the night of June 30 when a flashflood, triggered by a cloudburst, struck Talwara village of Gohar subdivision in Himachal Pradesh's Mandi district. The baby's 24-year-old mother, Radha Devi, and 59-year-old grandmother, Poornu Devi, were also washed away. No trace has been found of them. Talwara village lay devastated. When villagers went about checking on families and assessing damage, an elderly neighbour heard Nikita crying and alerted relatives. Nikita's aunts, Tara Devi and Kirna Devi, took her in their care. And the entire community reached out to the orphaned child. When word got around, Nikita's relatives and the Mandi district administration began receiving calls from couples, even from abroad, to adopt her. However, the family got together and decided against adoption. "Nikita is our blood and we couldn't possibly give her to anyone outside the family. I will raise her like my own," said Kirna Devi of Shakauri village near Thunag in Seraj area of Mandi district. On Sunday, the family gathered to cremate Nikita's father and perform the last rites of her mother and grandmother though their bodies are yet to be found. "All close relatives gathered in Talwara to take part in the last rites. It was decided that Nikita would stay with us," said Tara's husband, Ramesh Kumar. "Me and my wife already wanted Nikita to be with us," Kirna's husband Aantraran Singh said. Krishan Chand Thakur, a revenue officer posted in Gohar, who visited Talwara village, said a bank account had been opened in Nikita's name as people are coming forward with financial aid.

H'bag's Charwa dam opens 2 sluice gates
1 2 Hazaribag: Two out of the four sluice gates of Charwa Dam reservoir, which supplies drinking water to three lakh consumers in Hazaribag town and adjoining villages, have been opened to release excess water caused due to heavy rain since the onset of monsoon, officials said on Sunday. Charwa Dam has 31 feet of storage capacity, but when it this reaches 25 feet, the administration opens the gate to release excess water. This was the first time in the last 50 years that the sluice gates had to be opened at this time of the year. Arun Bauri, urban infrastructure expert of the Hazaribag Municipal Corporation, said that as a precautionary measure, the dam's sluice gates has been opened to release extra water. "Till mid June, the water level of the dam was 16 feet," he said. The dam, built by the Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC), is spread across 200 acres. From June 17 until now, Hazaribag received more than 800 mm of rainfall against the normal of 112 mm in June and 357 mm in July. Meanwhile, the excessive rainfall has also destroyed the sowing of crops such as maize, oilseed, and vegetables, in the region. The target for kharif sowing this year has been 84,000 hectares in Hazaribag, but despite good rainfall, the transplantation of paddy has been low because the seedlings have gone under the water. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Power crisis also continues to cripple life in Hazaribag district due to the downpour as people are battling blackouts for 12 to 16 hours daily. According to a spokesman of the JBVNL, the DVC is currently providing 11 megawatts of electricity during peak hours, meeting the power requirements of the town and district at that time. He said this too has been hampered by the damage of large number of transformers in various localities. Due to persistent rainfall, restoring power connection usually gets delayed.
