WATCH: Charges dropped against Mnisi in Likhona Fose murder case

14-year-old Likhona Fose's mutilated body was discovered in a veld near her Durban Deep home in June 2025.
Mduduzi Mnisi walked out of the Roodepoort Magistrate's Court a free man on Wednesday after the state withdrew murder charges against him in the killing of 14-year-old Likhona Fose, a former pupil at Ikusasalethu Secondary School.
The case, which had gripped the West Johannesburg community since Fose's death, took a dramatic turn after prosecutors received new information that cast doubt on Mnisi's involvement in the crime.
WATCH: 'New information came to light'
A presiding magistrate confirmed that the withdrawal of charges followed the emergence of crucial evidence that was not available during Mnisi's bail application.
'There was new information which came to the fore,' said the magistrate.
'When the state received that particular information, subsequent to the bail application, the state decided to withdraw the charges against the accused. A certificate authorising the withdrawal was issued by the senior public prosecutor.'

Fose's mutilated body was discovered in a veld near her Durban Deep home in June 2025, prompting a murder investigation and Mnisi's subsequent arrest.
Earlier this month, Mnisi was granted R5 000 bail by the Roodepoort Magistrate's Court.

Mnisi maintains innocence
Speaking outside court, a visibly relieved Mnisi reiterated his innocence and said he had maintained from the beginning that he was being wrongfully accused.
'I knew from the onset that I didn't commit this crime,' said Mnisi. 'That's why I had an alibi for where I was on the day it happened.'

He also suggested that his past reputation in the community may have made him a target.
'You know, in the location, when they know you used to do wrong things, and now you've changed, they don't accept those kinds of good things,' he said.

Captain Vusi Mnisi, spokesperson for the Vosman Police Station, confirmed that on the evening of August 2, police officers were summoned to Witbank General Hospital, where they were directed to a woman from Vosman who had severe burn wounds all over her body. 'Upon preliminary investigation, it was discovered that the woman was poured with petrol by her boyfriend and was set alight,' Mnisi said, adding that the suspect has already been arrested and investigations into the case are underway. 10 metro police and SAPS officers arrested in Edenvale to appear in court

10 metro police and SAPS officers arrested in Edenvale to appear in court Ten police officers from the SAPS and Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) are due to appear in the Germiston Magistrate's Court today, following their arrest yesterday at the Edenvale Police Station. Bedfordview and Edenvale News reports that the officers were taken into custody while on duty. According to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid), they face charges of corruption and theft. Ipid spokesperson Lizzy Suping says the arrests are linked to a multi-disciplinary law enforcement operation that took place on June 4 in Edenvale, initiated by the premier of Gauteng. During the operation, the officers allegedly raided a shop, confiscated cigarettes, and took R35 000 in cash along with three packs of headache tablets (Panados). The goods were estimated at R5 000. 'They arrested the cashier for trading in illicit cigarettes and the other employee for violating immigration rules,' Suping says. However, it is alleged that not all the confiscated items were recorded in the police occurrence book. The shop manager later disputed the quantity and type of goods that were logged. All the arrested officers are constables, except for one sergeant. They are currently detained at Germiston Police Station. National reports indicate that six of the arrested officers are from the EMPD, while the remaining four are SAPS members stationed at Tsakane Police Station. EMPD and Saps officers to appear in court for corruption and theft

The officers allegedly raided a shop, seized cigarettes and took cash. At least ten members of the South African Police Services (Saps) and the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police department (EMPD) are expected to make their first court appearance on Tuesday. The officers are expected to appear at the Germiston Magistrate's Court on allegations of corruption and theft. Corruption Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) spokesperson Lizzy Suping said the incident occurred on 4 June 2025. 'It is alleged that during a multi-disciplinary operation by law enforcement initiated by the Premier of Gauteng, the accused officers raided a shop at number 7 Hermila Avenue, Edenvale, where they seized cigarettes and took cash amounting to R35 000 and three packs of Headache tablets (Panados) to the value of about R5 000. Arrest It is also alleged that the accused officers failed to record all the merchandise seized from the shop at the police station. Suping said the shop manager allegedly disputed the quantity and type of merchandise booked in the Occurrence Book to the Station Commander. 'The members were arrested today [Monday] while on duty and will appear before the court tomorrow. All arrested officers are Constables and one Sergeant, and are detained at the Germiston Police Station.' Last month, two Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) officers were arrested on charges of extortion and corruption. The arrests followed a swift probe initiated by a public complaint. JMPD corruption JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla said they received a distress call on Saturday from a concerned citizen who reported being extorted by officers. Fihla said the operation involved a coordinated effort from the JMPD's Internal Affairs Unit, which effected the arrests. 'The complainant alleged that officers demanded R8 000 after accusing their company driver of fleeing an accident scene. Acting on the provided vehicle registration, JMPD Internal Affairs quickly tracked the vehicle to a BP Garage in Parktown, where three officers were located.' 'A search of the officers and their vehicle uncovered R5,340 from two male officers, much of which could not be accounted for and was suspected to be illicitly obtained. Some of the money was found concealed within the vehicle. The two male officers were immediately detained at Jeppe SAPS on charges of extortion and corruption,' Fihla said. JMPD Chief of Police Commissioner Patrick Jaca said the arrest of these two officers sends a clear message. ALSO READ: Farm murder accused says he was forced to feed women's bodies to pigs
