Community gathers in Dube to honour Thobile Tshabalala after repatriation
The family and friends of the late Thobile Tshabalala gathered to honour her life in a candlelight service at her home in Dube. This comes after residents successfully donated funds to help her family repatriate her body from the USA on July 8. According to information provided, Tshabalala left South Africa in May last year for greener pastures and started working as an au pair through a programme. ALSO READ: Urgent appeal: Zondi family needs R130k to repatriate daughter's body from USA She was, however, let go by her agency after she fell ill in April. It is alleged that due to her deteriorating mental health, Tshabalala reached out to a friend abroad who promised to assist her with money to fly back to SA. However, she collapsed at their meeting point in the airport. Tshabalala's uncle, Kholekile Mnisi, said they are grateful to everyone who made donations to help bring her body home. According to her former friend, who was in charge of the GoFundMe account that was used to gather the donations, a total of R328 000 was donated. However, they did not receive all the funds as only R83 600 was received, Mnisi said. 'We see it fit to release these figures because we are liable to give everyone who donated feedback on how the money was used, but we are disappointed that the friend kept a portion of the money to herself without our permission.' Mnisi described their current state of the family as 'going through an out-of-body experience that one could never prepare for'. 'The last time she saw her daughter was when she was alive and healthy, and now she's only receiving her belongings in a black bag, which contains sneakers and a few items, as well as her empty purse and passport. 'It is gut-wrenching because Thobile had a lot of belongings in the US that her mother could not get, and no one can be held accountable for us not receiving them.' Tshabalala will be spending her final night in her home and will be laid to rest tomorrow, July 12. At Caxton, we employ humans to generate daily fresh news, not AI intervention. Happy reading!

Parolee accused of Fose's murder granted bail, but to remain in custody until parole board decides his fate
Despite being granted bail, whether a parolee accused of the murder of Likhona Fose, 14, will be released from custody rests on the decision of the parole board. Mduduzi Mnisi was released on parole in December 2018 after he was sentenced to 18 years' imprisonment for attempted murder and robbery with aggravating circumstances. He served nine years in prison and was paroled until 2027. On Wednesday, magistrate Delize Smith granted him bail of R5,000 after a witness, who told police Mnisi had been seen with the 14-year-old in Durban Deep, Roodepoort, shortly before her murder, declined to consult with the state's legal team. 'This court is not the trial court, and the testimony of that witness has not been tested. But the behaviour of this witness now at this stage, when she has to come for the consultation with the prosecutor or assisting investigating officer further, seems to be ducking and diving, and [the witness] even goes to stay in another address,' Smith said. 'A person is deemed to be innocent until proven guilty at the trial. And as there is no evidence, prima facie, at this stage, the court finds this to be an exceptional circumstance [grounds for bail to be granted],' she ruled. During the bail application, the investigating officer in the Fose murder, Moses Semosa, testified that the witness told him she had seen Mnisi walking to his home with the teenager at about 4pm on May 31, the day before she was found dead. Mnisi said he did not know her, denied any involvement in her murder and asked the state to check his cellphone records as he was in Daveyton with two friends at that time. This alibi was investigated, and his phone was linked to a tower in Daveyton. Mnisi also called his girlfriend to testify that they were together at her home in Kagiso after 7pm on May 31, that they had spent the night together and he had never left her sight. The court heard that Mnisi's cellphone was linked to a tower in Kagiso at about 8pm. On hearing about the cellphone locations, Mnisi's parole officer, Neo Lakaje, said he had violated his parole conditions as he had not obtained prior permission to be in another jurisdiction. Smith instructed the court order be sent to the correctional supervision or parole officers, saying bail would only become effective if the parole board decided Mnisi's parole should be reinstated. The court heard during the bail proceedings that he had violated his parole conditions, which required him to notify authorities if he left his home district. Part of his alibi was that he had travelled to two other locations during the time that Fose went missing.

Likhona Fose's alleged murderer granted R5,000 bail
The Roodepoort magistrate's court has granted Mduduzi Mnisi, accused of murdering the 14-year-old Likhona Fose, bail of R5,000. The court previously heard Mnisi is allegedly linked to the crime through the statement of only one witness, who allegedly saw the child with him. Fose's mutilated body was discovered at an open veld in Durban Deep, Roodepoort, on June 1. Mnisi was released on parole in December 2018 after he was sentenced to 18 years' imprisonment for attempted murder and robbery with aggravating circumstances. During the bail application, the investigating officer, Sgt Moses Semosa, testified that an eyewitness had seen the accused going to his place with the deceased on May 31 about 4pm. However, Mnisi denied killing Fose, stating that he did not know the deceased and that his phone records would prove he was in Daveyton to meet his friends, 'Fish' and 'Madiba' at the time. National Prosecuting Authority Johannesburg regional spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane said this alibi was investigated, and his phone was indeed linked to a tower in Daveyton. 'The accused called his girlfriend to give testimony that they were together on the 31st after 7pm and spent the night together, further stating that the accused never left her sight,' Mjonondwane said. She testified that he left on Sunday about 6pm, when he said he was going to see his mother. 'He spent Saturday night with me. We were together the whole of Sunday. He left about 6pm to see his mother,' she testified. Mjonondwane said this was contrary to the analysis of the accused's cellphone records that linked his phone to a tower in Kagiso at 8pm. 'The court also heard evidence from his parole officer, Neo Lakaje, who, upon getting details about Mnisi's phone being Daveyton, told the court that he had violated his parole conditions as he never obtained prior permission to be in another jurisdiction,' she said. The matter has been postponed to Friday for further investigations. TimesLIVE

Bail granted to Mduduzi Mnisi in shocking murder case of 14-year-old
Murder accused, 39-year-old Mduduzi Trevor Mnisi, charged with the premeditated murder of 14-year-old Likhona Fose, was granted bail of R5,000 on Wednesday by the Roodepoort Magistrate's Court. Image: Itumeleng English / Independent Newspapers The man accused of murdering a 14-year-old former Ikusasalethu Secondary School learner, Likhona Fose, was on Wednesday granted bail of R5,000. Mduduzi Trevor Mnisi, the 39-year-old parolee who faces several charges, including premeditated murder, appeared in the Roodepoort Magistrate's Court on Wednesday, where, due to a lack of evidence linking him to the disappearance of the Durban Deep learner, he was granted bail. Mnisi, who was allegedly last seen with Likhona in May, the day she went missing, has previously denied his involvement in the gruesome murder. Likhona's mysterious disappearance sent shockwaves among the community of Braamfischerville and Durban Deep after she was found mutilated, just a day after her disappearance on June 1. The matter was postponed to Friday, July 11. Mnisi is currently out on parole for a 2009 robbery and attempted murder conviction. His release comes a week after his girlfriend, Pinky Gantso, testified and provided an alibi for the day Likhona disappeared, stating that Mnisi had visited her in Daveyton on the night in question. The State, which had opposed bail, was accused of relying heavily on a witness statement claiming Mnisi was seen with Likhona on May 31, shortly before she was reported missing. The investigating officer in the matter, Moses Semosa, who testified last week, insisted that Mnisi was the last person to be seen with Likhona around Durban Deep, adding that due to Mnisi's previous conviction, he should not be granted bail. Semosa returned to the stand in the Roodepoort Magistrate's Court on Wednesday as Mnisi continued his bid for bail. He revealed that Gantso's evidence corroborates Mnisi's claims that he was in Daveyton at the time. "I have the cellphone records of the applicant who is appearing here before the court. Your worship, the information that I am reading here shows that on the 31st May, 2025, at 16:55:49 seconds... the tower shows Daveyton. It also shows that he had communication with another person... At 20:01, the tower shows Kagiso," the officer stated. In his defence, Mnisi gave the court an account of his whereabouts on the day of Likhona's disappearance. He said: "That Saturday, I went to Daveyton. When I came back, it was approximately past 7 to 8 in the evening,' he told the court.
