Ragù is a cool, minimal, romantic ode to Italian cooking that's housed in a repurposed shipping container on Wapping Wharf in waterside Bristol. No, come back, please – don't be scared. There are tables, chairs, napkins, reservations and all the other accoutrements of a bricks-and-mortar restaurant, even if this metal box may at some point in its existence once have been used to ship things to China and back. To my mind, Wapping Wharf has gone from strength to strength in recent years, and no longer feels at all like one of those novelty 'box parks' that have about them a heavy whiff of the edgy temporary fixture. Today's Wapping Wharf is a true independent food destination in its own right, and with a bird's-eye view from one of Ragù's window seats, while eating venison rump with gorgonzola dolce and sipping a booze-free vermouth, you can watch the crowds head for the likes of the modern French Lapin, Tokyo diner Seven Lucky Gods, modern British Box-E, Gurt Wings and many more; by day, there's also a bakery, a butcher, a fromagerie and so on.
Of course, anyone who calls their sophisticated modern Italian restaurant Ragù clearly didn't live in the UK through the 1980s. For me, as for many others, ragu will always be sold in a glass jar and advertised via caterwauling operatic ditties during the breaks on ITV's London's Burning: 'Ragu, it brings out the Italian in you,' etc. This was back in a time when Britain's attitude to Italian cuisine stretched, broadly speaking, as far as spag bol, though many of us were at a loss to tackle the 'bol' part of that equation without Unilever's industrially squished sieved tomatoes at 79p a jar.
Those days are long gone, however, and the evidence is clear to see at Ragù, with its crisp, lightly battered artichoke fritters with a punchy aïoli, its Hereford onglet with cipollotti onion, and its cannoli with rhubarb curd and pistachio. Ragù caters to a young-ish, knowing audience who are well aware that Britain's current Italian dining culture was shaped by the River Cafe, Angela Hartnett and Giorgio Locatelli. Owners Mark and Karen Chapman opened Cor on North Street, Bedminster, in 2022, where they serve clever, fancy yet erring-on-the-hearty Mediterranean plates – think Catalan sausage with clams and fino butter sauce followed by tonka bean creme caramel. At Ragù, meanwhile, their focus is wholly Italian and, to my mind, this could be some of the most skilful cooking anywhere in Britain right now. I recommend the place wholly, effusively and slightly enviously of anyone who gets to taste the heavenly tiramisu made with sumptuously soggy slices of panettone before I get the chance to return.
After the artichoke fritti, we moved on to a bowl of humble-sounding 'crespelle in tomato brodo, spinach and sheep's ricotta'. That's cheese pancakes in tomato sauce, right? Wrong. Very wrong. This was the greatest, richest, most drinkable-by-the-bucket tomato brodo I've ever tasted. Juicy, sweet, sharp and rich in all the right dimensions. What are they doing to tomatoes back there in that tiny kitchen?
Next up, slow-cooked shoulder of lamb, pulled off the bone, shaped into a loose patty, placed on top of a fresh pea stew and dotted with a sharp salsa verde and earthy pecorino. The star of the show, however, was the Ashton Court venison, cooked rare but as soft as butter, then given plenty of colour in a hot pan and served on pungent gorgonzola with bone marrow butter. This is not a dish for the faint-hearted or slender of appetite. Those wanting something lighter might opt for the skate wing with salmoriglio and courgette and fennel salad, or even the tagliolini with Devon crab, but this is cooking that lends itself to excess.
Service was fantastically prompt throughout, as the young team coped with the Saturday night chaos with calm aplomb. Desserts are another highlight, with three types of Italian cheese (robiola la tur, ubriaco rosso and taleggio) and a gelato, which on that day was a pink grapefruit and Campari sorbet, but please leave room, if possible, for the chocolate budino with sour cherries – a thick, almost-too-much truffle-type cake with huge, boozy cherries and crumbed amaretti biscuits. It's like an Italian take on the St Emilion au chocolat, or perhaps the French stole it from the Italians in the first place? I'm not sure who makes it better, but it's a fight I'd happily referee. Either way, Ragù might very well be my favourite new restaurant of 2025, and we've barely reached summer yet. All hail the Bristol riviera.

Two WaterAid volunteers, Liz Lace and Lucas Myers, shared a sneak peak into their first shift on Wednesday handing out free water and cleaning toilets on has been a charity partner of Glastonbury since 1994, supporting water and sanitation services on site while spreading the message that everyone deserves access to clean water, decent toilets, and good Lace described the experience as "really fulfilling", allowing her to enjoy all the festival has to offer while simultaneously "doing something worthwhile". This year marks Mr Myers' fourth time volunteering with the charity, working on the 'loo crew' to keep more than 3,000 toilets onsite 21-year-old described the team of volunteers as "one big family". "Meeting other volunteers from all walks of life means every conversation back at the camp is unique, and have been some of my best times at the festival," he said. "I really enjoyed taking the photos and capturing moments of volunteers enjoying themselves, rolling their sleeves up and spreading the important message of WaterAid's mission – that change starts with clean water and decent toilets. "The whole event is just indescribable. I've met the best people here and I always feel like I've made a real difference with volunteering." Ms Lace acted as a 'water welcomer', helping festival-goers stay hydrated by filling up bottles for those passing through the gates and exploring the site. The 60-year-old has been to every Glastonbury Festival since 1993 except one, following the birth of her daughter. "My favourite thing about volunteering at the festival has been meeting all the lovely people. Everyone was so happy to chat and get involved," she said."This is my fourth time volunteering here and over the years I've made some firm, lifetime friends. "I will keep coming back to volunteer with WaterAid because it's such a great experience. You never know who you'll meet or the amazing experiences you'll have."WaterAid is encouraging festival-goers to add their name to its 'Water can't wait' open letter, calling on world leaders attending this year's COP30 conference in Brazil to take urgent action to tackle the water and climate crisis.

"It's about the people you meet there and the memories you make, not how the place is decorated. It's the atmosphere - that's what made The Leadmill so special." So says Will Penney, 23, who is just one of hundreds of people queueing up outside Sheffield's famous venue on Friday night for one final time before it shuts its to get in to see Miles Kane perform, Will, who lives in Sheffield and who is originally from Northern Ireland, says he had always wanted to see Kane play at The Leadmill, so the fact he is the star of the final gig there is "very fitting".This last event comes at the end of several years of legal argument involving the venue - and once Kane has left the stage and a few final club nights have been held, The Leadmill will close in its current Electric Group, which owns the site, has promised it will remain a music venue with the "coolest bands" taking to the stage in a refurbished building, fans waiting under The Leadmill's landmark red neon sign for the last time say it is the end of an says that while other venues feel "forced", with "neon signs everywhere", The Leadmill has always been something different."That's the charm. "Where are the next Arctic Monkeys going to be performing if we lose these venues?"Arctic Monkeys, as well as Pulp's Jarvis Cocker, Richard Hawley, and many other musicians, all credit The Leadmill as a key part of their early careers. Amber, 16, a young musician from Blackpool, says she had hoped to perform at the Sheffield venue one day."Young and upcoming artists need a place to start out, and when places like this are [changing], it's not giving people like us a chance," she explains."When there's less opportunities, and places are getting shut down, I think it's scary." Charlie and Violet, both 17, say they have been to gigs at The Leadmill roughly every month for the last few years and say the change is "heartbreaking".Violet says they had signed "every petition, replied to every email, multiple times" to try and keep The Leadmill in its current form."Losing it is going to have a big impact on Sheffield," she says."I don't think we'll recover from not having it, to be honest." However, Charlie, who says he also attended lots of gigs with his mum who used to work at The Leadmill, says he is trying to stay optimistic about the says he hopes the site will remain an indie venue with small bands on the stage."If it needs refreshing to keep people our age coming and still seeing live music and new bands, that might be better for the local scene," he adds."But I think it's perfect as it is." Preserved gladiator helmets on display at Leeds armouries

Three gladiator helmets "perfectly preserved" following the eruption of Mount Vesuvius nearly 2,000 years ago are to go on display in Leeds as part of an international touring exhibition. Gladiators: Heroes of the Colosseum has been brought to the Royal Armouries in collaboration with the Colosseum in Rome and the National Archaeological Museum of Naples. The exhibition also features gladiatorial weaponry and armour from a training camp in Pompeii, effectively frozen in time as a result of the eruption in Armouries director general and master of the armouries Nat Edwards said the collection gave a "real sense of the spectacle of gladiatorial combat". He said: "Some of the objects in this collection you really can't see anywhere else in the world."We have three perfectly preserved gladiators' helmets. They're incredibly rare, they're beautifully decorated, all of the parts still work. "They've got decorations showing winged Victories and barbarian captives, and they look as good as new. They could have just been taken off yesterday, they're quite amazing." The exhibition runs from 28 June to 2 November in Leeds, and has already attracted more than one million visitors while on display internationally. It was officially opened on Wednesday by Jodie Ounsley, also known as Fury from BBC One show Gladiators."That was a lovely golden thread that connected the spectacle of Rome, and why people went to watch gladiators then, to our own fascination with competition and larger-than-life heroism," said Mr Edwards. Mr Edwards said his favourite piece was a gravestone to gladiator Urbicus."There's a little object at the end of the exhibition, which is really personal and intimate and it's a gravestone, which was made by the wife of a gladiator."His name was Urbicus and she tells his story. He was a kind-hearted gladiator. He spared one of his opponents in the arena who then stabbed him in the back."But it's a picture of him with his dog, with his pet, and this is a loving wife who has put a picture of this loved, gentle-hearted soul who found his way into the gladiators arena and his pet dog."And there's something, which is so human about that. It's just a little moment of connection with a human being across thousands of years of history and ultimately that's what museums like our own are all about, those human connections," he said.
