UWGB honors Alex Smolecki with 26.59-mile walk to Lambeau Field

GREEN BAY, Wis. (WFRV) – At sunrise, supporters gathered at the Kress Events Center to take part in 'A Walk to Remember Alex Smolecki': a 26.59-mile tribute to the UW-Green Bay swimmer who tragically passed away in February.
The route stretched from campus to Lambeau Field and back. While some completed the full marathon distance, many joined for portions of the walk, united by a shared mission, honoring Alex's adventurous spirit and determination.
'Why we are doing this walk is because Alex had a spirit of zest for adventure and he never backed down from any challenge,' said his sister, Magda Maslach.
Newsmaker Sunday: 'Ballerina on the Battlefield,' two years later
Smolecki, a junior mechanical engineering student and member of the men's swim and dive team, was known for pushing boundaries, whether that meant diving into workouts, running a marathon solo after it was canceled due to wildfires, or spontaneously flying to Japan to hike Mount Fuji.
'When he passed away tragically, we decided this is not it,' Maslach said. 'We're going to keep his legacy going and we invite everybody, challenge yourself. Grief is such a heavy thing.'
The walk marked the launch of #AleksFunniestChallenge, a campaign organized by Smolecki's family encouraging people to take on one physically challenging activity each month in 2025.
The name comes from Alex's Instagram handle, which friends and family continue to use as a tribute page.
'Just move. Go move. Do the things you don't want to do 'cause that's what Alex did. He just hopped in there and went for it,' Maslach said.
Alex's brother, Sebastien Smolecki, led the walk on Sunday. He said starting at the Kress made the event even more personal; it's where he and Alex trained together for swim team workouts.
'We did a few laps around campus, then went to Lambeau and back,' Sebastien said. 'It ended up being about 26 miles in a marathon. Even though he's not here, he's still impacting all these people, which is awesome.'
Participants who started the walk at the Kress received commemorative t-shirts, but others joined from afar. Maslach, who lives in Colorado, hosts a weekly challenge at Red Rocks every Saturday.

She plans to post monthly physical challenges on the memorial page for others to follow at their own pace.
'I just miss him,' Sebastien added. 'I wish he was here. But now we just carry his legacy on.'
For those who couldn't attend the walk, the family encouraged supporters to walk or run any distance throughout the week and post on social media using the hashtag #AleksFunniestChallenge.

Robert Kraft makes promise to Patriots fans after three losing seasons

New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft made a promise to fans ahead of the 2025 NFL season. That promise comes on the heels of the team hiring Mike Vrabel as its new head coach and upgrading at various roster positions after back-to-back 4-13 regular season finishes. When appearing on The Adam Schefter Podcast, Kraft pointed to the team's active free agency and 2025 NFL draft as reasons for fans to be optimistic this year. 'We have a new coach in Mike Vrabel who is really connected with the players, who's doing great work," said Kraft. "We have a young quarterback and a lot of great veterans—free agent veterans who came in. A great draft class. We're gonna have fun this year, I promise.' There haven't been many reasons to be optimistic about the Patriots in recent years. They have not made the playoffs since the 2021 season, and they have endured losing records in three consecutive years. To take things a step further, they haven't even won a playoff game since their Super Bowl LIII victory over the Los Angeles Rams. There is a sense of change with the arrival of Vrabel and a more experienced coaching staff. Quarterback Drake Maye looks like he could be a future standout, and the team has done a much better job of surrounding him with the necessary talent to be successful. Perhaps this will be the year when the Patriots finally take flight. Follow Patriots Wire on Twitter and Facebook.

Sauce Gardner opens up on how LeBron James played role in him meeting Ice Spice

LeBron James, even if unintentionally, helped play the role of matchmaker for Sauce Gardner's rumored relationship with rapper Ice Spice, the Jets cornerback told TMZ. Gardner appeared on an April 2024 episode of 'The Shop' — a podcast featuring James — alongside rapper Travis Scott, former NFL wideout Chad Ochocinco and star Mariners outfielder Julio Rodriguez, and Gardner told the outlet he believes that's when the couple met in person for the first time. They seemingly became Instagram official just over one year later in a post shared by Ice Spice with her and Gardner posing in front of a bathroom mirror. AP While Gardner told TMZ that he wasn't 'trying to speak too much on it' when approached in Los Angeles, he did acknowledge that he and the rapper are 'cool' — and proceeded to reveal a bit about their relationship. 'We just be having a good time,' Gardner told the outlet. 'Two young individuals, you know. She from New York. I play in New York. She talented, real talented, when it come to what she do. Same thing for me. Two people that get hated on that's really good at what we do, so we got a lot in common. We cool.' Advertisement 3 LeBron James is pictured at Fanatics Fest on June 21. Getty Images Before Ice Spice's post, the duo had been spotted out in public on different occasions, and Gardner appeared to tease the relationship earlier in April by sharing a photo on Instagram that showed them standing next to a car in New York City. When they attended a Knicks playoff game at the Garden in May, they received a loud ovation from fans in attendance as they watched the Knicks close out their second-round series against the Celtics. Gardner, 24, will enter the 2025 campaign off a rough season and is entering the last year of his rookie deal, but he still attended the Jets' mandatory minicamp instead of holding out, getting fined and attempting to make a contract statement. Bill Kostroun/New York Post 'I just wanted to show my teammates and the coaches how much I'm bought into this,' Gardner told reporters on June 12. 'I want to win. I want to be a part of changing the organization.' He earned consecutive First-Team All-Pro appearances in his first two NFL seasons — as well as winning Defensive Rookie of the Year and securing a pair of Pro Bowl spots — but failed to even make the Pro Bowl last year.

Deion Sanders rehabilitating in weighted vest, promises to return to job soon

Colorado football coach Deion Sanders has been rehabilitating in a weighted vest with the help of his son Deion Jr. as he tries to come back from an unspecified health issue and return to his job in Boulder. Sanders, 57, provided two recent updates on Instagram, including one on Saturday that showed him wearing a weighted vest next to Deion Jr. 'Every little step I take My son @deionsandersjr has been there so we've decided to keep on stepping!' Sanders wrote in the post Saturday. '#CoachPrime coming to a stadium sold out soon.' In another post from June 26, he used his situation to promote an energy drink sponsor in the same vest. '1 step closer Everyday,' he wrote. 'I'm Walking it out! Our Team is working their butts off therefore I've got to match that (fire) they have!' Sanders Sr. has been away from his coaching job since April as he dealt with his health issue at his estate in Texas. He did not attend Colorado's annual youth and high school camps in June even though operating such camps is listed in his Colorado contract as one of his official duties. In May, he was unable to attend the wedding of former Colorado two-way star Travis Hunter in Tennessee. 'He know why we couldn't be there,' Sanders Jr. said on his YouTube channel after Hunter's wedding. Sanders Sr. also canceled a speaking engagement in Florida scheduled for June 8. The timing of his return to campus remains unclear, but he is scheduled to appear at a Big 12 Conference media event in Frisco, Texas on July 9. Wearing weighted vests helps build strength and endurance. They also help stimulate the growth of new bone cells, according to Harvard Medical School. Deion Jr. said in a video posted on YouTube June 21 that his father was 'back active, moving around' and has made progress. Sanders Sr. previously said on social media on June 11 that 'everything is OKAY' and that he would provide a full update upon his return to Colorado. In late May, Sanders Sr. appeared on a podcast with former NFL cornerback Asante Samuel and said that 'what I'm dealing with right now is at a whole 'nother level' but said he's coming back after losing about 14 pounds. Sanders previously battled issues with blood clots in his legs and had to miss a Pac-12 Conference media event in Las Vegas because of it in July 2023.
