Under pressure, AIU removes joint secretary, forms inquiry panel
New Delhi:
Facing backlash over mismanagement and administrative irregularities at the ongoing FISU World University Games in Germany, resulting in some of the athletes missing out on participation, the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) – under pressure from the sports ministry to crack the whip on erring officials – on Wednesday removed its joint secretary Baljit Singh Sekhon from his post and constituted a four-member inquiry committee to probe the procedural lapses in registration.
The development came a day after
TOI
reported citing sources that the ministry was considering disbanding the AIU, along with the School Games Federation of India (SGFI), over alleged malpractices and irregularities in their functioning and replacing them with two new national federations. Six Indian badminton players were barred from the WUG in Rhine-Ruhr after officials failed to submit their names correctly during the managers' meeting on July 16.
Similarly, India couldn't field an entry in the women's 10,000m and 400m as long-distance runner Seema along with two others and sprinter Devyaniba Zala's names went missing from the start list due to an official error.

AIU sources claimed on Wednesday that following negotiations with FISU (the international body for university sports), all the 12 members of the badminton squad were awarded medals and certificates as per the norm.

However, there was no official confirmation from the organisers.
In the suspension letter issued by AIU – a copy of which is with TOI – Nazneen Begum, under-secretary (Admin/Estt) wrote: 'The president of the AIU, in the interest of upholding accountability and procedural propriety, and in exercise of the powers conferred under Rule 18.2 of the AIU Office bye-laws, hereby place Dr Baljit Singh Sekhon, joint secretary, under suspension with immediate effect.
It is also ordered that for the duration this order remains in effect, the headquarters of Dr Sekhon shall be the AIU Office, New Delhi.
He must obtain prior permission before leaving headquarters/station.'
In a separate letter issued by Nazneen, she informed about the formation of an investigative panel.
'The committee shall examine all relevant records related to the registration and management of Indian contingent at the WUG and determine the facts concerning the non-inclusion of selected athletes, the exclusion of designated coaches and the penalties imposed by the event organisers,' the order stated.

ENG vs IND live streaming: How to watch 4th Test Day 4 action for free?
The fourth day of the India vs England 4th Test at Old Trafford is poised for high drama as England tighten their grip on the match. After piling up a mammoth 544/7 in response to India's 358, the hosts hold a commanding 186-run lead with Ben Stokes (77*) and Liam Dawson (21*) set to continue. Joe Root's masterful 150 guided the hosts into total control, capitalising on lacklustre Indian bowling and the absence of traditional swing on a sun-baked Day 3. Earlier, Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett's 166-run opening stand laid a formidable platform, further exposing India's inconsistent attack. For India, the fourth day is a test of resilience. The bowlers need quick wickets to prevent the deficit from growing, but an overcast, rain-threatened Manchester forecast brings its own complications. Rain has already delayed the scheduled start, with a 50–60% chance of showers hanging over the morning session. If play resumes, movement through the air might aid bowlers, but conditions remain unpredictable. With the series at 2-1 in England's favour, Shubman Gill's men are fighting not just the scoreboard but also history—having never won a Test at Old Trafford. Jasprit Bumrah tipped to join Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma after IND vs ENG Tests; 'Passion is there, but he has lost his…'
Jasprit Bumrah might be the world's best bowler in the longest format of the game but his struggles with workload in the ongoing Test series against England could possibly force him to rethink about his career in whites, felt former cricketer Mohammed Kaif. Bumrah, who took five-wicket hauls in the first and third Tests against England - both in a losing cause - looked a pale shadow in the ongoing fourth Test in Manchester. He just took the lone wicket of Jamie Smith as England are on course for a huge first innings lead against India. In a video posted on social media, Kaif claimed that the Indian team might need to prepare themselves without Bumrah at least in Tests going forward. In fact, prior to the start of the series, India head coach Gautam Gambhir confirmed that he Bumrah will play three games. "I don't think you will see Jasprit Bumrah in the upcoming Tests, and he might retire. He is struggling, and there is a noticeable drop in pace. He is an honest person. If he feels he is not giving his 100 per cent for the country, win matches for his country or take wickets, it is my gut feeling that he will himself refuse," Kaif said. One of the major highlights of Bumrah's struggles in Manchester has been his drastic drop in pace. The 31-year-old, dropped from 140kph to the range of 130-135 in the fourth Test. Moreover, Bumrah too experienced fitness issues during the second session of the third day. He was seen holding his ankle and went off the field after bowling a sole over with the new ball, going for 11 runs. According to Kaif, going wicketless is one thing, but the drop in pace remains a massive concern. "Getting wickets or not is one thing. But bowling at 125 to 130 kph, and the wicket he got, the wicketkeeper had to dive forward; fit Bumrah's catch carried to a good height, irrespective of Joe Root or Ben Stokes. He is a player who can get anybody out according to his will. I feel passion is there, but he has lost his body and fitness," added Kaif. "His body is not supporting him. His inability to take wickets in this Test is a clear indicator that he will face issues in future Test matches. Maybe he might not play in future. Virat, Rohit and Ashwin have left. Maybe the time is coming when India will play without Bumrah. I hope my predictions are wrong," he concluded.

Diksha lone Indian to make cut in Womens Scottish Open
Agency: North Ayrshire (Scotland), Jul 26 (PTI) Diksha Dagar was the lone Indian to make the cut at the 2025 ISPS HANDA Women's Scottish Open golf tournament and was placed T-59 here. With rounds of 69-76, Diksha was 1-over at the Par-72 course as 71 players made the cut. The leader is England's Lottie Woad, who is making her pro debut. She added a 65 to her first round 67 and is now 12-under. Diksha, the 24-year-old two-time winner on the Ladies European Tour, who shot 3-under 69 in the first round, seemed to be on her way out as she was in danger at six-over through 16 holes in the second round and 3-over for the tournament. As she has done many times before, Diksha rallied from the precarious position to birdie the last two holes and made the weekend on the cut line, which fell at 1-over. The other two Indians Pranavi Urs (75-73) and Tvesa Malik (77-77) missed the cut. Pranavi is making a return after weeks due to an injury break. English golfer Woad produced a bogey-free 65 (-7) on day two to lead by two strokes at the halfway stage. The 21-year-old began the day in a share of second place at Dundonald Links and rolled in her first birdie on hole 14 before adding further birdies on 17 and 18. Woad then continued her momentum on her second nine, making birdies on the third, fifth, seventh and ninth holes to lead the tournament with a total of 12-under-par. This week Woad is making her professional debut, having won the 2025 KPMG Women's Irish Open on the Ladies European Tour (LET) at the start of this month, and she had a T-3 finish at the Amundi Evian Championship while still being an amateur. Denmark's Nanna Koerstz Madsen (68-66) and world number one Nelly Korda (68-66) share second place with a score of 10-under-par. Korea's Sei Young Kim is in outright fourth place on nine-under-par with her compatriot Hyo-Joo Kim one shot further back in fifth. Ina Yoon of Korea and Japan's Minami Katsu are in a tie for the sixth place on seven-under-par with Ireland's Leona Maguire and Spain's Nuria Iturrioz in T-8 on six-under. American Sarah Schmelzel and Thailand's Arpichaya Yubol round off the top 10.
