A MAJOR DIY retailer is offering motorists free car air con checks as temperatures are set to reach 34C.
Halfords customers can get gas and refrigerant levels on their vehicle air conditioning units checked to make sure they're in working order.

It comes as temperatures are expected to reach as high as 34C in parts of the UK by Monday.
Halfords lets shoppers book their free air con check on its website via www.halfords.com.
You enter your postcode and vehicle registration and it tells you the nearest branch you can get it done.
However, you may be charged based on where you live and the type of vehicle.
The retailer hasn't said if the free appointments are available all the time, but we checked based on a North-East London location and there were slots until as far away as July 6.
Halfords says if the check reveals you need to top up your car air conditioning unit's gas or refrigerant levels, you can buy the products to do this yourself in its stores.
However, the RAC says this is usually a job for the specialists.
You can also book in for an air con recharge service at Halfords from £65.
Checkatrade says having this service done normally costs between £65 and £130, so Halfords is at the cheaper end of the scale.
Halfords is not the only place you can have a free air con check carried out though - Kwik Fit also offers a free checking service.

However, the cost of getting your air con unit recharged at Kwik Fit is £72.95 or more - more expensive than Halfords.

BMW recalls over 70,000 EVs for software issue
Software Issue Could Cause Loss Of Drive Power BMW is recalling 70,852 electric vehicles because of a software issue that could shut down electric motors, leading to a sudden loss of drive power, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Watch More False Alarm Can Trigger High-Voltage Shutdown Source: BMW According to the recall documentation, software in the affected vehicles may receive erroneous indications of a 'double-isolation condition,' which would warrant shutdown of the vehicle's high-voltage electrical system, cutting off power to the motors. This false alarm will trigger a shutdown even if there is no issue. This condition can lead to loss of drive power while moving, which increases the risk of a crash, the NHTSA noted. However, power-assisted braking and steering are not affected, the safety agency noted. A red warning symbol may be shown on the dashboard 15-20 seconds before loss of power occurs. BMW estimates that approximately 43 warranty claims related to this issue, but told the NHTSA that it is unaware of any related accidents or injuries. OTA Fix The remedy is an over-the-air (OTA) software update that will be pushed to the recalled vehicles free of charge. Lexus, Nissan Top 2025 J.D. Power Quality Rankings
The Winners If you're looking for a new car and want to ensure the best quality right off the assembly line you might take a closer look at Lexus and Nissan. The two Japanese automakers topped the 2025 J.D. Power Initial Quality Study – which tallies up what owners have to say about their vehicles during the first 90 days of ownership. Nissan Ariya at the automaker's global headquarters in Japan — Source: Getty The IQS looks at the number of issues owners have experienced – everything from electronic glitches to faulty transmissions – tallied up as 'problems per 100 vehicles, or PP100 in Power-speak. The lower the score the higher the quality. And by that measure, Lexus had a score of 166, making it both the best brand in the luxury category but tops overall. Nissan was surprisingly close behind, at 169 PP100, making it second overall and tops among mainstream brands. And the Losers The list of losers in this year's IQS starts with Ram. Last year's overall winner, the Stellantis truck division tumbled 24 spots in the overall ranking – among the 33 brands covered by the 2025 IQS. With a score of 218, it fell well below the industry average of 192 PP100, largely due to owner complaints about the Ram 1500, which went through a complete makeover for this model year. In general, all-new models, as well as those that went through a major redesign, tended to have more quality problems than carryover vehicles, the IQS revealed. Source: Ram Audi anchored the list, with a score of 269 problems per 100, a 10% increase in owner complaints this year. And Volvo was again second-to-last, at 258 PP100, Infiniti doing only slightly better with a score of 242. Rivian, actually, would have been dead last this year with 274 problems reported by owners. But it wasn't officially rolled into the list 'due to limited data,' said Power in a summary of the 2025 IQS results. Tesla, the biggest of the all-electric brands, was a mixed bag. It also was left out of the formal list since the automaker makes it difficult for Power to track owners in some states and then get them to fill out surveys. Based on the data it did get, however, Tesla had a score of 200. While still well below the industry average, the EV company managed to reduce the number of complaints substantially compared to 2024 when it had a score of 266. Some Surprises While Ram's sharp tumble in the IQS rankings was easily the biggest surprise this year, there were a number of other unexpected findings. That started with Jaguar which this year is the fourth-ranked brand – just behind Korea's Hyundai – with a score of 175 PP100. The British brand has a historical record of quality problems but has been working its way up the J.D. Power charts in recent years. It was ninth in 2024. As for why it's doing so well? Jaguar has slashed its line-up to a few core products – all older models that it has had time to work out the bugs with, according to Power. The challenge will be maintaining quality when Jaguar begins rolling out a new range of EVs over the coming years. 2025 Jaguar F-Pace — Source: Jaguar Then there was Dodge, the Stellantis muscle car brand. It scored the biggest turnaround on the IQS, going from dead last in 2024 to seventh this year. But there's an asterisk here: Dodge was previously dragged down by problems with its little Hornet model. But the Italian SUV wasn't included in the latest study due to a lack of data. What Ticked Off Owners The good news is that traditional, mechanical problems, such as faulty powertrains, have become increasingly uncommon with today's vehicles. These days, high-tech features tend to be the biggest concern for motorists, notably faulty voice control systems. 'While customers do find the larger touchscreens visually appealing,' said Frank Hanley, Power's senior director of auto benchmarking, 'owners find these things to be overly complicated and too distracting to use while driving. By retaining dedicated physical controls for some of these interactions, automakers can alleviate pain points and simplify the overall customer experience.' Source: James Riswick Another source of trouble? Cupholders. There are more than enough in most vehicles today. The problem, owners told Power, is that they're often too small, or not flexible enough to handle the variety of beverage containers passengers bring into their vehicles: juice boxes, soda bottles, Big Gulps and Yetis. 'While it seemed like manufacturers had cupholders figured out,' Power noted, they're struggling to keep up with being able to accommodate all the different shapes and sizes that are increasingly available.' Electrified Vehicles Cause More Problems Conventional hybrids, like the Toyota Prius, have become increasingly common these days, and despite having more complex drivetrains they tend to create only slightly more problems than models running entirely on gasoline, an average 196 PP100 compared to 184, respectively. Tesla Model Y — Source: Tesla More advanced battery-based drivetrains still give motorists headaches, according the IQS. And, for the first time, plug-in hybrids were reported to have more issues – an average 237 problems per 100 vehicles – than pure battery-electric models. The lower score for BEVs, at 212 PP100, largely reflects the improvements made by Tesla this past year, Power reported. The Top Models As for the single best vehicle on the market, at least in terms of initial quality? The Porsche 911 which experienced just 116 problems per 100 according to its owners. 911 GT3 The IQS also breaks out the best models in 22 separate vehicle segments. Of these, General Motors had the most top-ranked products, a total of five, with Ford landing four, Honda another three. Ford was the top-ranked brand, again with four segment winners, including the Super Duty named tops in the Large Heavy Duty Pickup category. SNP's ‘student politicians' snub submarine welding centre
Sir Keir Starmer's government is expected to step in to fund an ambitious defence facility on the Clyde after the SNP's 'student union' politicians refused grant funding on ideological grounds. A £2.5 million grant from Scottish Enterprise, the national economic development agency, for a submarine welding centre was withheld due to a party ban on 'munitions' funding. Rolls-Royce, which is ready to support the project by providing £11 million worth of specialist equipment, expressed 'dismay' at the news last week. It said the project had been classified as a 'munitions' scheme solely on the basis that it would 'support the construction of naval vessels'. • SNP ban on 'munitions' funds puts Scottish shipbuilding on the line In a letter seen by The Times, Steve Carlier, president of submarines at Rolls-Royce, warned John Swinney, the first minister, that the project 'cannot continue' without the public funding and was at risk of being formally cancelled within days. The funding, which Scottish Enterprise said had not been formally applied for, is believed to have been rejected as the Scottish government's definition of 'weapons or ammunition' would include a 'military submarine', rather than directly relating to any arms. Rolls-Royce has disputed that it is a 'munitions' company. All UK military submarines are powered by nuclear propulsion, regardless of whether or not they have the capacity to carry nuclear weapons, and Rolls-Royce technology is not used for firing warheads. John Healey, the UK defence secretary, told The Sunday Show, on BBC1 that he could 'hardly believe' a Scottish nationalist government would stand in the way of skills development in Scotland. He said: 'We have a long-term partnership with Rolls-Royce who are central to some of the military equipment that keep us all safe. Rolls-Royce want to set up a new welding skills centre, not just to support its munitions business but also to support Scotland's shipyards [to offer] essential skills, new opportunities for young people. 'If the Scottish SNP government won't step up to support skills and the future of jobs in Scotland then we will. It really strikes me as student union politics. This is not a serious government concerned about the opportunities for young people in the future or the skills base for Scotland, or indeed the industry and innovation for the future.' The SNP also has an ambition to rid Scotland of nuclear weapons, which are based at Faslane naval base on the Clyde. Healey added: 'This is a deterrent that for over 70 years has been our guarantor of security in the UK. It is what Putin fears most and the UK is the only country that commits its nuclear deterrent in full to the defence of our Nato allies. Strong deterrence is required and vital to keep people safe in the future.' • Most Scots want to keep UK's nuclear deterrent, poll shows Britain is also engaged in highly sensitive talks to purchase fighter jets capable of firing tactical nuclear weapons, in a major expansion of the deterrent intended to counter the growing threat posed by Russia. The move would represent the biggest development in the UK's deterrent since the Cold War and a recognition that the world has entered a more dangerous nuclear era. Healey would not reveal where the new fighters would be based but the prospect of nuclear-armed jets being deployed from RAF Lossiemouth, or on manoeuvres at the air force's ancillary training and support bases in Scotland, will incense the SNP and its core anti-nuclear supporters. Mairi Gougeon, the Scottish rural affairs secretary, told the BBC that the welding centre was never eligible for funding thanks to the 'long-standing' policy of the SNP government. She said: 'I think the key difference here between ourselves and the UK government is that when we have principles, we stick to them.' Gougeon said Scottish ministers 'completely understand' the 'really unprecedented threats' the UK faced on the world stage and confirmed the SNP supported the increased defence spending announced by the prime minister. She added: 'That doesn't mean that we can't also still maintain the policy positions that we've had for quite a long time and have been long standing within our party, that we don't support the use of public finance for the manufacture of munitions and neither do we support that for nuclear weapons.' A Scottish government spokesman said: 'We are committed to ensuring Scotland is the home of manufacturing innovation, but the Scottish government's long-standing policy position is that it does not use public money to support the manufacture of munitions. 'We recognise the important role of the aerospace, defence, security and space sectors in the Scottish economy and we regularly engage with a range of companies, alongside ADS Scotland as the industry body. 'We are investing up to £2 million to develop engineering skills in the Glasgow city region, designed by the Clyde Maritime Cluster in partnership with Skills Development Scotland. 'The Scottish government has yet to see the detail of the Defence Spending Review, but we remain firmly opposed to the threat, use and basing of nuclear weapons as a deterrent in Scotland.'
