Sibu to celebrate 861 lifesaving donours at 2025 Blood Donour Day event
SIBU (July 4): A total of 861 donours will be recognised at the World Blood Donour Day 2025 celebration, which will be held at Kingwood Hotel here on this Sunday (July 6).
Organising chairperson Dr Rachel Teng, who is also vice chairperson of the Malaysian Red Crescent Society (MRCS) Sibu branch, said the Blood Donours' Recognition Ceremony 2025 will be the highlight of the event.
'We will be recognising blood donours who have consistently donated throughout 2024. Those who have donated 10 pints or more, and subsequently for every additional five pints, will receive a specially designed certificate,' she said at a press conference yesterday.
'In total, 861 donours will be honoured, based on the data provided by the Sibu Hospital Blood Bank.
She also noted that active blood donation organisers would be acknowledged for their role in ensuring adequate blood supply, especially during the pandemic.
This year's event, jointly organised by MRCS Sibu and Sibu Hospital, carries the theme 'Give Blood, Give Hope: Together We Save Lives'.
According to Dr Rachel, the event is supported by Liangtye Trading Sdn Bhd, Lions Club of Sibu Berjaya, Lions Club of Sibu Queensway, Sri Minyak Group, Mytown Pharmacy, Biolife Lab (Sibu) Sdn Bhd, and Alpro Pharmacy.
Activities include a health campaign, blood donation drive, and a colouring contest for children.
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, who is also Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government, will officiate as guest-of-honour. MRCS Sarawak chairman Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr George Chan Hong Nam will be the special guest.
To avoid overcrowding, Dr Rachel said certificate distribution will be staggered.
'Donours who have contributed 10, 15, 20, and 25 pints will receive their certificates via official WhatsApp after the ceremony. If they prefer a printed certificate, they may request one from the MRCS Sibu branch and collect it during office hours from Monday to Friday, 8am to 4pm,' she said.
Donours who have given between 30 and 75 pints can collect their certificates at the event from 8.30am to 10am.
'Those who have donated 80 pints and above have been requested to be present by 9.45am to receive their certificates and gifts on the main stage,' she said, adding that the top donour this year has donated 154 pints.
Dr Rachel said a blood donation campaign will also be held that day, with a target of collecting 200 pints. Every successful blood donour will receive a Certificate of Appreciation from MRCS National Headquarters.
Meanwhile, the colouring contest ― open to 66 children ― will be held from 9am to 10am. It will be divided into three categories: Category A (ages 4-6), Category B (ages 7-9), and Category C (ages 10-12). All participants will receive a mystery gift from the organiser.
There will also be an organ donation recruitment drive and a health campaign.

Charity dinner to raise funds for dialysis centre in Mentakab on Nov 1

THE Pahang Buddhist Association (PBA) haemodialysis centre in Mentakab is organising a charity dinner to raise funds in view of increasing operating costs. Event organising chairman Datuk Hiang A Li said the centre's average monthly expenses amounted to some RM100,000. 'Many patients could not afford to pay the full fees and due to this and other operational costs, the centre exceeded its budget by over RM360,000 last year. 'To continue running the centre and provide quality renal treatment, we have decided to host a fundraising dinner,' he said when announcing the details of the programme to kickstart the donation drive. The dinner will be held on Nov 1 at SMJK Hwa Lian school hall in Mentakab. Hiang, who is also the school's board of governors chairman, said private haemodialysis centres charge between RM280 and M300 per session. He said patients in PBA Mentakab centre paid between RM20 and RM100, depending on their family income and affordability. 'Through the charity dinner, we hope to raise about RM3mil for the funds to last for the next five years. 'We urge the public to support us so that we can continue to give quality treatment to all needy patients,' he said, adding that all donations would be exempt from tax. Separately, PBA deputy president Datuk Franky Chua Goon Eng said the Kuantan haemodialysis centre was set up in 1996 to assist renal patients from all races. He said over the years, some 300 patients, especially those who could not afford to pay the full fees, benefitted from the initiative. 'In 2018, we opened our second centre to assist those residing in Temerloh and Mentakab. To date, we have 10 dialysis machines there, treating 26 patients. 'Our main aim is to help less fortunate patients, urgent cases and not for profit,' he said. Chua also said every year, the number of patients was increasing with some getting younger. He added that both centres also offered haemodiafiltration (HDF) treatment, the highest standard of dialysis. 'These HDF machines can significantly reduce complications post-dialysis, aligning with the centre's goal of helping patients resume their daily lives. 'So far, we have eight HDF machines,' said Chua, who also urged the people to go for regular check-ups and adopt a healthy lifestyle. Catwalk show to build confidence

FOR many women battling cancer, hair loss is one of the numerous side effects they have to deal with. Even after the disease is defeated, the physical reminders often linger. Some continue to face thinning hair, uneven regrowth or permanent hair loss, all of which can take a toll on self-esteem. Acknowledging this silent struggle, thoughtful individuals have come together to give 100 women cancer patients and survivors a chance to be celebrated like beauty queens at 'Dreams Stage Show'. Event organiser Sheila Oh said 100 youth volunteers have been recruited to help style the participants. 'They will receive full makeovers, which will include professional hairstyling with wigs, makeup and outfits as well as personal coaching on stage presence. 'The highlight will be the runway show where each participant will walk the stage cheered on by family, friends and supporters,' she said during the press conference in Seri Kembangan, Selangor. Oh expressed gratitude to sponsors who had come forward to make the event a reality. She said the idea for the event was first suggested by one of the sponsors. Gaga Hair co-founder and chief operating officer Friday Chua, who runs a business selling wigs, said it was a deeply personal encounter that inspired him to get involved. 'A woman walked into my salon with a cloth wrapped around her head. 'She removed it and told me she wanted to look good for her daughter's wedding, and did not want to embarrass her family because of the way she looked. 'Her words struck me hard. 'I tried a wig on her and in that moment, I saw her sorrowful expression transform into a bright smile,' he recalled. Chua shared that this experience made him wonder how many other women would have been in a similar situation and felt the same way. This got the ball rolling for this event. Mahani Kassim, the president of show co-organiser Pink Unity, said many participants admitted that they had never imagined being part of something like this. Pink Unity is a cancer support initiative for women under National Cancer Society of Malaysia. 'Women are generally vain and this does not change with cancer. 'Some have avoided social events altogether since their treatment, because of the way they look. 'When they go out, they will try to dress up and look their best despite carrying deep burdens in their hearts from their silent struggle with cancer. 'They just want to look like everyone else and not stick out due to their appearance,' she said, adding that some participants were in end-of-life care. Mahani described the event as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that would be very meaningful for the women. The Dream Stage Show is set to take place on Aug 17 at Confetti Kuala Lumpur at Mines Commercial Centre on Jalan Mines 2 in Mines Wellness City, Seri Kembangan.
