PITAS: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) detained a suspected Vietnamese fishing vessel 13 nautical miles northeast of Tigabu Island here on Monday. Kudat Maritime Zone Director Hasbullah Omar said the operation followed a public tip-off, which prompted the deployment of patrol boat Cenderawasih 10 to the area. The suspect vessel was spotted at around 5.50am and attempted to flee but was successfully intercepted and boarded by enforcement officers. Checks revealed six Vietnamese men, aged between 27 and 44, onboard without any valid identification documents, along with fishing equipment and about 300 litres of diesel. All six individuals and the boat were detained for further investigation under the Fisheries Act 1985 and Immigration Act 1959/63, with the seized assets valued at nearly RM2 million. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? MUKAH: The death toll from Saturday's (July 5) boat tragedy off the coast of Pantai Belawai rose to five on Sunday after another victim was found, as efforts continue to locate five others still missing. A Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department spokesman said the body of a boy, whose age has yet to be determined, was recovered at 6pm, about 300m from the scene. "As of now, five victims have been confirmed dead, five are still missing and seven have been rescued. The five missing victims are all adult males," the spokesman said in a statement. In the incident that occurred around 2pm Saturday, a fibreglass boat carrying 17 Indonesian nationals from Kampung Belawai fishermen's jetty capsized en route to the Zion Pelita Coconut Plantation jetty. The seven survivors include four adult men, two adult women and a boy. Meanwhile, the four deceased victims found earlier comprised two adult women, a boy and a girl. The search and rescue operation continues with surface-level searches within a 3km radius of the incident location, assisted by the police, the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency, the Sarawak Coast Guard, Rela and local villagers. KUALA LUMPUR: The Road Transport Department (RTD) will suspend the licences of commercial vehicle drivers involved in crashes until investigations are completed, its director-general Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli said. Should the holder of a Public Service Vehicle (PSV) licence or Goods Driving Licence (GDL) be found guilty after the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) investigation, their licences will be terminated. Advertisement 'To ensure commercial vehicle drivers are competent, RTD will ensure that suspended individuals must undergo and pass a refresher course before their licences are reactivated or removed from the suspension list. 'The refresher course will be organised by the RTD at locations to be determined later and drivers will be charged fees to cover the cost of the course,' he told reporters after a licence presentation here today. He shared that five commercial vehicle drivers have been suspended, including those involved in the fatal PDRM Federal Reserve Unit lorry crash in Teluk Intan and the bus that hit a height restriction barrier in Nilai, Negeri Sembilan yesterday. In other developments, Aedy Fadli said the RTD has issued 510 compound notices to express buses, tour buses and goods vehicles since the enforcement of wearing safety belts came into effect in stages from July 1 and that 80 of the notices were issued to drivers and 396 to passengers and attendants. He also reminded express bus drivers that they will be issued compounds should their passengers be found not to be wearing safety belts and it was their responsibility to remind passengers before their vehicles moved out. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
