Liev Schreiber recalls trans daughter Kai's low-key coming out: Wasn't ‘that big of a deal'
'The most profound moment was her asking us to change her pronouns,' the 'Ray Donovan' star told Variety in an interview published Thursday.
The Emmy-nominated actor, 57, spoke about his support for his daughter ahead of their joint attendance at Friday's spring gala for the Ali Forney Center, which works to support and provide shelter to homeless LGBTQ+ youth. He shares 16-year-old Kai and 17-year-old son Sasha with 'Mulholland Drive' star Naomi Watts.
Schreiber, who said 'Kai was always who Kai is,' recalled that his daughter coming out as trans 'didn't feel like that big of a deal to me' because she 'had been so feminine for so long.' He praised her as 'such a fighter' but did not specify when his daughter came out.
Kai is a model, who recently made her professional debut in Valentino's Fall Winter '25 campaign, according to her IMG Models profile. Though Schreiber said Kai's coming out was relatively understated, he told the trade outlet, 'It's important that she goes, 'Hey, I am trans,' and 'Look at me.''
Schreiber is the latest in a handful of celebrity dads — including former NBA star Dwyane Wade, and actors Marlon Wayans and Robert De Niro — who have publicly voiced support for their trans children. Last week, 'Raging Bull' star De Niro said he 'loved and supported Aaron as my son, and now I love and support Airyn as my daughter,' after she went public with her transition in an April interview with Them.
'I don't know what the big deal is,' added De Niro, who shares Airyn with actor Toukie Smith. 'I love all my children.'
While some celebrities have detailed their experiences raising trans kids and offered advice to other parents, Schreiber steered clear from doing the same. 'I don't know the answer for your kid,' he told Variety, citing various factors including a parent's upbringing or a family's spirituality or religion. He did offer a kernel of wisdom for parents to consider: 'Teenagers are a headache. They're hard.
'It doesn't matter whether they're trans or not because you'll come out of this,' he said. 'But a trans teen is going to be a teen. They're such a pain so much of the time, and Kai is as feisty and outspoken as they come.'
Schreiber and Watts were romantically linked from 2005 to 2016. Over the years, the exes have separately brought their children to movie premieres and hyped them up on social media.

It took 15 years, but Noel and Liam Gallaher sidelined their acrimony to share a stage again. The long-awaited Oasis Live '25 reunion tour kicked off July 4 at Cardiff Principality Stadium in Wales almost a year after the band announced, 'This is it, this is happening.' Now, they're embarking on a sold-out, 41-date stadium run that will play throughout the U.K., North America, Asia, Australia and South America until November with band members Andy Bell (bass), Gem Archer (guitar), Paul "Bonehead" Arthurs for the first time since 1998 (guitar) and newcomer to the band Joey Waronker (drums). The North American jaunt kicks off Aug. 24 in Toronto and will also hit Chicago, East Rutherford, New Jersey and Pasadena, California, with Cage the Elephant opening all dates. ABC Cancels Series After Only One Season
ABC has made another tough decision regarding one of their newest television shows. Unfortunately, for fans of one particular series, it's been confirmed that ABC has canceled the title after releasing one sole season on their network. It took quite some time for the scripted series to receive some kind of update regarding whether or not it would be renewed or canceled entirely. Now, however, we know that ABC decided on the latter. It's unfortunate that the series had to be canceled, and even more so that crew members are alleging that there was inappropriate behavior while working on the series. What began as a promising addition to the network's lineup has now ended not only in cancellation, but under the cloud of behind-the-scenes concerns that have started to come to light in recent weeks. '' Doctor Odyssey ' has been canceled after one season on ABC.' Variety notes that 'the cast's contracts expire on Monday with no move from ABC to put the series back on its schedule for the upcoming year.' With that said, the outlet does suggest one possible reason for the show's cancellation. The news was released just 'after three of the show's former crew members filed a lawsuit against Disney and 20th Television on May 30, alleging that the studio enabled an 'unchecked campaign of sexual harassment for months'' and the crew members also accused 'assistant prop master Tyler Patton of making 'sexual jokes, innuendos, comments, sexual gestures and images' in addition to 'unwanted touching' including 'openly grabbing a visiting female employee's buttocks.' The medical drama series, created by Ryan Murphy, starred Joshua Jackson as Max Bankman. His character is a doctor on a luxury cruise line called the Odyssey. The story revolves around Bankman as he assists with medical emergencies while overseas. The series Doctor Odyssey was produced by 20th Television in association with Ryan Murphy Television. Why ‘& Juliet' is the smartest dumb musical you need to watch
The Backstreet Boys' 'I Want It That Way' might have made teeny boppers lose their minds a quarter-century ago, but the Grammy-nominated track might have finally self-actualized as duet by a playwriting couple haggling over how a show should end. (Apologies to Nick Carter et al. and my seventh-grade peers, but it's true.) Likewise, did you know that Bon Jovi's 'It's My Life' is secretly an anthem for coming back from the dead? Or that Britney Spears' 'I'm Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman' is a tremulous ballad of self-discovery for a nonbinary person daring to envision, reckon with and claim their identity? The production is anchored by two generative constraints: One, Anne Hathaway (Teal Wicks) insists that her husband William Shakespeare (Corey Mach) rewrite 'Romeo and Juliet' so that its heroine (Rachel Simone Webb) doesn't kill herself at the end but gets to go on adventures, exercise agency and learn how to own her choices. And two, she's propelled on her journey by the incomparable pop catalog of Swedish composer Max Martin, with its earnest relatability and devilish hooks. In scene after scene, that premise plays like a theatrical round of pop music bingo. You wonder what bit of Billboard 100 ubiquity the dialogue is teeing up, and then when the first notes of Ariana Grande or Katy Perry strike, the first person in the audience to audibly recognize it wins. But everyone else wins, too, when P! nk and Demi Lovato hits reveal themselves in a new context, appreciating anew just how sturdy yet flexible Martin's oeuvre is. The overall effect is a bit like combining 'Six' and 'Moulin Rouge! The Musical' — a pop medley gives pop feminism to the Renaissance. Let's be clear: Pop and musical theater are different art forms. When we turn on the radio, we want something easy on the ears, that can fade into the background. Here, vocal flatness can be a virtue; it doesn't call too much attention to itself or demand much of its listener. So to hear conservatory-trained voices give shape, shading and heft to familiar tunes also offers a new way to relish what's special about bursting into song onstage. As Juliet absconds with a band of friends to Paris, where new star-crossed loves await, Webb gives her a voice with the depth of a cavern with many secret chambers of pools. Nick Drake, playing her nonbinary BFF, May, sings with both a feathery tenderness and a bristly inborn drama. Meanwhile, Wicks gives each note a beginning, middle and end of yearning, like a mom brushing the tangles out of your hair with loving firmness. Comedic chops are just as well honed. Michael Canu as a himbo gives simple ideas the soul-deep focus that's only possible when you have one precious brain cell. Mateus Leite Cardoso as the geeky François, Juliet's potential new match, uses a vocal fry whine to delightful effect; it's the nebbish's only defense against the forces of fate. As Lance, François' father, Paul-Jordan Jansen deploys an accent so cheesy that melted brie might actually be lining his vocal cords. Perhaps inevitably, '& Juliet' can feel like an overstuffed grab bag of romcom and pop music formulas. Tug at its easy girl power politics ever so slightly, and the seams unravel, revealing a narrative as safe and tidy as any Hollywood drivel. Formulas get a bad rap, but the thing is, they work. They release our inner pressure valves, quench our cravings. '& Juliet' works best when it embraces exactly how dumb those old tricks are. The Backstreet Boys should not be able to patch up a marriage, and yet they do — and we want them to — sure as a pop song returns to its I chord.
