Garmin smartwatches gets Google Maps support with turn-by-turn navigation
Navigation and fitness tracking
In a blog post, Garmin's Vice President of Consumer Sales and Marketing, Susan Lyman, said, 'The turn-by-turn notifications will be a game changer for those who want to stay hands-free and keep their phone in their pocket.'
With this integration, Garmin smartwatches now deliver turn-by-turn navigation alerts using subtle vibrations, enabling users to follow routes without needing to look at their phone. This feature can be especially useful in crowded areas or when crossing streets. The app can also display the next three turns with a simple tap, providing better situational awareness during movement.
The navigation functionality remains active while the watch continues to track fitness data. Whether users are running, walking, or biking, they can receive directions while monitoring metrics such as distance, heart rate, and more.
Deeper integration with Health Connect
Availability
While Garmin has not provided a full list of supported models, users can check the ConnectIQ store to determine compatibility with their device. Although Garmin wearables have long supported third-party navigation tools, the inclusion of Google Maps offers a familiar and reliable alternative, especially for users already within the Android ecosystem.

Google confirms that it is combining ChromeOS and Android into a single platform
After years of speculation, Google has finally confirmed that it is working to merge ChromeOS and Android into a unified platform. Sameer Samat, President of the Android Ecosystem at Google, revealed the company's plans in a conversation with TechRadar – marking the first time a senior executive has officially acknowledged the move. 'I asked because we're going to be combining ChromeOS and Android into a single platform, and I am very interested in how people are using their laptops these days and what they're getting done,' Samat said, when quizzed on why he was observing the reporter's use of Apple products like the MacBook Pro, iPhone and Apple comments offer the clearest signal yet that Google intends to bring its two operating systems together. While rumours of such a merger have circulated since late 2024, the company had never formally announced the project. At the time, reports suggested it would be a multi-year effort to fold ChromeOS into Android – a shift that now appears to be under Google has not shared a timeline or full details, Samat's comments suggest that the goal is to create a more seamless cross-device experience – one that bridges laptops, tablets and smartphones more effectively. This move could potentially also strengthen Android's position across multiple form factors and help Google build tighter integrations between its ecosystem of devices. The transition won't happen overnight. Back in early 2024, Google began laying the groundwork by merging key parts of the Android kernel into ChromeOS. The company said the change would enable faster adoption of AI features across devices. The confirmed merger appears to be the next logical step. If all goes to plan, future Chromebooks could ship with this unified OS, offering better compatibility with Android apps and tighter integration with Android phones. A recent leak also hinted at a possible Pixel-branded laptop, internally codenamed 'Snowy,' which could serve as a showcase for the new the last year, Android itself has evolved to include more desktop-like features. The unified platform is expected to take several years to roll out. And while some had hoped for an announcement at Google's rumoured mid-August Pixel 10 launch event, current reports suggest it's unlikely.- Ends
