TG seeks lower interest rates on REC loans
Irrigation Minister N Uttam Kumar Reddy met REC Managing Director Jitendra Srivastava in New Delhi and explained the mounting financial burden on the state government due to high interest rates on the loan availed by the previous government for KLIP. The then BRS government had borrowed Rs 16,000 crore from REC at high interest for irrigation projects, the irrigation minister said, adding that the Congress government has been facing a big difficulty to repay the loans with high interest rates.
In some instances, the government could not repay loans due to paucity of funds and received notices from the REC, Reddy explained.
REC, a Central government agency, has recently issued a notice to the state government for not paying the installment amount of Rs 1,393 crore towards loans borrowed by the Kaleshwaram Irrigation Project Corporation Limited (KIPCL) and Telangana State Water Resources Infrastructure Development Corporation (TSWRIDC).
The REC also warned that loans availed by both the corporations would be declared NPAs (non-performing assets) if the state government failed to clear the dues. In a letter to Irrigation Secretary Rahul Bojja, REC Executive Director Jithin Kumar stated: 'There is a total overdue of Rs 1,393.65 crore of which Rs 319.74 crore and Rs 292.75 crore are critical dues of TSWRIDC and KIPCL, respectively. If dues are not cleared on or before June 28, it will lead to slippage of both accounts into the NPA category'.
Furthermore, Jithin said both the borrower accounts were already classified as Stage-2 category under the Reserve Bank's NPA norms. This delay in serving the dues will have a negative impact on the financial record and rating of the utilities and the state, he remarked.
At the time of availing the loan, the state government has agreed to repay the loan amount in monthly installments. Officials said that the REC already expressed serious concerns over the poor condition of the project after three barrages - Medigadda, Annaram and Sundilla - suffered damages. The delay in repayment will create more problems, they added.
Responding to the Irrigation Minister's plea, the REC CMD said that the Centre will consider the state government's request and provide a relief from the burden of the payment of loans with high interest rates.

Former Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik slams govt for scrapping metro project
Former Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik has lashed out at the BJP-led state government for scrapping the Bhubaneswar Metro Rail project . Patnaik, in a strongly worded post on X, called it a betrayal of the city's future. "The Bhubaneswar Metro Rail Project would have reshaped how the city moves. Now, the double-engine government has pushed it 10 years back," Patnaik wrote. The first phase of the Rs 6,255 crore project, from the airport to Trisulia, was greenlit during Patnaik's tenure and scheduled to complete by December 2027. But the project was shelved recently, with DMRC issuing termination notices to contractors. The BJP government defended the move, saying the earlier route wasn't viable and that a more expansive Puri-Bhubaneswar-Cuttack corridor is being planned. "We are preparing a new DPR and forming a committee to study similar metros. The revised plan will connect all major cities," said Urban Development Minister Krushna Chandra Mohapatra . Mys-Kushalnagar highway will be ready by March 2027
Mysuru: The ambitious Mysuru-Kushalnagar greenfield access-controlled highway is expected to be completed by March 2027. As the project cost increased to Rs 4,128 crore from the original Rs 3,883 crore, it is likely to be delayed by three months. Earlier, it was scheduled to be completed before 2026. Meanwhile, Mysuru MP Yaduveer KC Wadiyar made it clear that package 1 under this scheme (Kushalnagar-Madikeri) will not be taken up due to the environmental concerns expressed by locals and activists. He also informed that the road will be ready by early 2027. PM Narendra Modi performed the bhoomi puja for this project in March 2023. However, the project is being delayed due to issues related to forest clearance, explained stakeholders. According to the details furnished by Union minister for road transport and highways Nitin Gadkari in response to a question raised by Bengaluru MP Tejasvi Surya, the minister informed that this 92km long highway is expected to be completed before the deadline. He stated that this project is divided into five packages and passes through the Mandya and Mysuru Lok Sabha constituencies. "Efforts are being made to get the forest clearance at the earliest for the project, which connects Paschima Vahini in Srirangapatna with Kushalnagar. Most of the forest land required consists of social forestry land parcels," he explained. Yaduveer, during his recent meeting with Nitin Gadkari, emphasised the need for timely intervention in overcoming delays related to forest clearance for the project.
