Trump about to give address to nation
Donald Trump is just about to address the US, after America conducted strikes on three of Iran's nuclear sites.
You can watch what he says from the White House at the top of this page.
We'll also be providing text updates here in the blog.
Netanyahu: Trump's bold decision will change history
Benjamin Netanyahu says Donald Trump and the US have acted with strength following strikes on Iran's nuclear facilities.
Posting on X, the Israeli leader says Trump's "bold decision" to target the three nuclear sites "will change history".
"America has done what no other country on earth could do," he says.
"History will record that president Trump acted to deny the world's most dangerous regime, the world's most dangerous weapons.
"His leadership today has created a pivot in history that can help lead the Middle East and beyond into a period of prosperity and peace."
US used bunker buster bombs on Fordow, Trump tells Fox News host
We're starting to get more information about the US attack on Iran's nuclear sites.
The US used six 30,000lb bunker buster bombs dropped from B-2 stealth bombers in its strikes on Fordow, Donald Trump told Fox News' Sean Hannity.
Additionally, 30 tomahawk missiles launched from US submarines were used in the attacks on the Nanatz and Isfahan facilities.
Trump expected to say that the US is not currently planning additional strikes inside Iran
Donald Trump is expected to say that the US is not currently planning additional strikes inside Iran when he speaks from the White House at 8pm (3am UK time), senior White House officials have told our US partner network NBC News.
These officials say Trump hopes the strikes propel Iran back to negotiations as he presses its leaders to an agreement that will end this war.
In a brief call with NBC, the US president called the strikes a "complete and total success".
Analysis: Iranian response could target US military bases or global shipping
Iran will "have to respond" to the US attacks, but just how it will do this is uncertain, our Middle East correspondent Alistair Bunkall says.
He says Iran may target the Strait of Hormuz, which connects the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman, and global shipping, or US military bases.
"If they [Iran] kill US service personnel, then this could get very messy very quickly. If they do something limited, then I think they will have had their riposte," Bunkall says.
"I think Trump doesn't want to continue it and I can imagine Trump will say to the Israelis: 'Enough now, you've had just over a week striking hundreds of targets. I've now done this. It's time to bring it to an end'."
Iranian state TV downplays damage caused
Addressing claims on Iranian state television that there has only been damage to the entrance and exit tunnels of the Fordow nuclear site, Bunkall says it is a "little too early" to read into such statements.
"Six massive ordnance penetrators would have done considerably more than just simply blowing the doors off," he says.
"Iranian state TV will be an interesting place to watch over the coming hours and see their messaging, if their messaging does remain similar to that, it is an indicator of the message internally to the people within Iran.
"If you downplay the damage that the Americans have done, then potentially you bring down the scale of what kind of retaliatory action you need to take as well."
Israel steps up alert level
The Israeli military has stepped up the state of alert across the country following US strikes on Iran.
All areas of the country are now limited to only essential movement. Schools and workplaces will all be closed, with the only exceptions being for "essential sectors".
Trump says Iran will 'get hit again' if it doesn't make peace immediately
Donald Trump has threatened further strikes on Iran unless it doesn't agree to an immediate peace with Israel.
Speaking to Reuters news agency in a brief phone interview, Trump said US strikes on Iran's nuclear sites were an "amazing success".
"They should make peace immediately. They should stop immediately. Otherwise they'll get hit again."
Trump spoke with Netanyahu after strikes
Donald Trump spoke with Benjamin Netanyahu this evening after the US attacked three nuclear sites in Iran, a senior White House official has told our US partner network NBC news.
The two have spoken almost every day in the last week concerning the conflict between Israel and Iran.
Iran confirms nuclear sites attacked by 'enemy airstrikes'
We have just had confirmation from Iran that US strikes have damaged three of the country's nuclear sites.
Morteza Haydari, the spokesperson of crisis management in Iran's Qom province, said part of the Fordow nuclear plant was attacked by "enemy airstrikes," the Tasnim news agency reported.
Meanwhile, Akbar Salehi, the deputy security officer of the governor of Isfahan, said: "An hour ago, air defences in Isfahan and Kashan began operating to confront hostile targets."
Israel in 'full coordination' with US over strikes
Israel was in "full coordination" with the US for its strike, an Israeli official told Israeli public broadcaster Kan, according to the Reuters news agency.

Trump's new gilded age: fearmongering, mass deportations and self-enrichment

Donald Trump's second presidency has led to allegations of pervasive self-dealing. From the acceptance of a luxury jet from the state of Qatar, to the creation of a Trump cryptocurrency, the president has been accused of monetizing the White House while enacting a swath of extreme policy. The political 'war' between Gavin Newsom and Texas

Gavin Newsom pledged to 'fight fire with fire' on Monday as he jumped into a brutal power struggle in Texas that is quickly growing into a national standoff. Newsom's move came as Texas Governor Greg Abbott ordered the arrest of dozens of state Democrats who fled to block a Republican plan to redraw congressional districts in Donald Trump's favor. Fifty‑seven Lone Star State Democratic lawmakers skipped town, flying to Illinois and New York in a dramatic bid to halt the GOP 's effort to push through a new electoral map. The Texas Democrats argue the sudden change could hand Republicans five additional Congressional seats - dramatically boosting Trump's chances of holding Congress in the midterms. The California governor - who many believe will run for president in 2028 - said he will 'fight fire with fire' against Abbott's redistricting plan, joining what Texas Democrat Julie Johnson called an 'all-out war.' 'The proposal that we're advancing with the legislature has a trigger only if they move forward, to dismantling the protocols that are well-established,' Newsom said. 'Would the state of California move forward in kind? Fighting? Yes, fire with fire.' He said that he has not yet seen the state party's re-drawing of California's districts, he set his terms for approving them. 'That process has to have the concurrence, the support of two-thirds of the legislature,' he said. California Democrats own 30 of 40 seats in the state senate and 60 of 80 seats in the state assembly. 'The maps, we believe, should be transparent. They should be provided in a transparent way to the public, and as a consequence, those maps are being processed and will be brought to light.' Newsom also offered Californians themselves a chance to endorse the maps in time for the midterms. 'We will offer them the opportunity to make judgments for themselves, again, only if Texas moves forward,' Newsom said. 'I'll reinforce that we believe it should be a national model, independent national redistricting, and it would revert back to its original form, but it's done in response to the existential realities that we're now facing. Things have changed, facts have changed, so we must change.' Newsom follows Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker, a potential 2028 presidential contender and outspoken Trump critic, who welcomed the fleeing Texas Democrats to Chicago on Sunday after having been in quiet talks with them for weeks. 'This is not just rigging the system in Texas,' Pritzker said Sunday. 'It's about rigging the system against the rights of all Americans for years to come.' U.S. Rep. Marc Veasey of Texas urged other Democratic governors to join Pritzker, Newsom and New York's Kathy Hochul. Democrats, Veasey said, have too often 'shown up to a gunfight with good intentions, no knives.' But 'that era is over,' Veasey declared Monday from Illinois. 'We are not going to unilaterally disarm.' Newsom reiterated that he was only acting in defense of his state. 'They've triggered this response and we're not going to roll over and we're going to fight fire with fire, but we're going to do so not just punching with the weight of the fourth largest economy, the most populous state in our union, the size of 21 state populations combined,' he said. 'We also will punch above our weight in terms of the impact of what we're doing, and I think that should be absorbed by those in the Texas delegation. Whatever they are doing will be neutered here in the state of California, and they will pay that price.' Abbott gave the state Democrats until 3 p.m. Monday to return to Austin, warning they risked arrest and even losing their seats. When none came back, Republican leaders authorized law enforcement to bring them in 'by any means necessary.' 'The sergeant‑at‑arms and any appointed officers are directed to send for all absentees whose attendance is not excused, and to secure and maintain their attendance under warrant of arrest if necessary,' House Speaker Dustin Burrows, a Republican from Lubbock announced. By fleeing the state, Democrats broke quorum in the Texas legislature, preventing Republicans from conducting official business . Democrats call the redistricting plan a blatant power grab and told they welcome the showdown with Republicans. 'When we have the President of the United States looking for five Congressional seats, this can eventually impact the entire United States, so to say that we are doing this to grand stand is bull[expletive], with all due respect,' Texas Rep. Linda Garcia told Monday afternoon. Among the liberals on the lamb, two members of the House are traveling with children -- a nine and five-year-old. Garcia decided to bring her nine-year-old son after not having great child care options and realizing she might be in Chicago until Aug. 19 -- when the current special session ends. 'What I want him to understand is that sometimes we have to make very big sacrifices in order to generate change,' the Mesquite (a Dallas suburb) Democrat shared in a phone interview from Chicago. 'I walked him through worst possible scenarios that could take place, including getting arrested, getting bombarded by he has been very brave.' Abbott doubled down by ordering Texas troopers to arrest all rouge Democrats Monday afternoon. Garcia's elementary school student has found a playmate in the five-year-old grandchild of another representative who was forced to bring the boy as well. 'This is going to be one of the greatest lessons he could learn. I would hope that in the future he would recall the courage that as a mother this requires,' she said, her voice cracking with emotion. They have been working with lawyers who told them arrests were a likely outcome. However, the Lone Star State Democrats believe this is a moment of inflection nationally, particularly because the congressional district that will be redrawn in Texas if the GOP gets its way would impact Black and Hispanic communities. 'You're going to steal the power and the voices of black and brown communities-- we're not just going roll over and just allow you to do that,' Rep. Lauren Ashley Simmons added. 'The message that I'm receiving from my community is that we need to stand up and hold the line.' In fact, the Dems wouldn't share their location in Chicago with Daily Mail, explaining they knew arrests were looming early Monday. 'We know that Donald Trump is the one spear-heading all of this. We don't know what he's capable of, we are preparing for the worst and hoping for the best,' Rep. Christina Morales said via phone interview. State Attorney General Ken Paxton, bragged he successfully secured a Texas Supreme Court ruling that held that the House could arrest absent members to secure their presence and establish a quorum when Democrats fled the state in 2021. 'If he wants to round up and arrest duly elected officials whose constituents are watching and who put us in office, so be it,' Rep. Simmons said of Abbott. 'I hope he understands, you can only push people so far to their breaking point and then there will be a response.'

Kremlin slams Trump tariff pressure on India over Russian oil as illegal

MOSCOW, Aug 5 (Reuters) - Russia accused the United States on Tuesday of exerting illegal trade pressure on India after U.S. President Donald Trump threatened again to raise tariffs on India over its purchases of Russian oil. "We hear many statements that are in fact threats, attempts to force countries to cut trade relations with Russia. We do not consider such statements to be legal," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters. "We believe that sovereign countries should have and do have the right to choose their own trading partners, partners for trade and economic cooperation, and to choose for themselves the forms of trade and economic cooperation that are in the interests of a particular country." Trump has said that from Friday he will impose new sanctions on Russia as well as on countries that buy its energy exports, unless Moscow takes steps to end its 3-1/2 year conflict with Ukraine. Russian President Vladimir Putin has signalled no change in Russia's stance on the war, despite the looming deadline. New Delhi has called Trump's threats "unjustified" and vowed to protect its economic interests, deepening a trade rift between the two major economies. Two Indian government sources told Reuters on the weekend that India will keep purchasing oil from Russia despite Trump's threats.
