Unpaid Intern Shamed, Denied Emergency Leave By Indian Boss, Post Viral
In the now-viral post on Reddit titled "Boss won't allow my friend to take emergency leaves as an unpaid intern", the user shared a screenshot of the conversation between the intern and the boss.
"My friend is doing an unpaid internship, but her boss gives her unlimited responsibility. He expects seriousness from his interns even though he doesn't treat them seriously," read the post's caption.
In the screenshot, the intern can be seen respectfully asking the boss to grant them a leave, owing to the poor health of the parents. However, the senior employee returned a passive-aggressive reply.
"Sir I'm really sorry for the short notice, I won't be able to come in today. I have an emergency situation at home since my parents are really sick and on bedrest rn so i need to stay back. I am really sorry for the sudden absence but it wont happen again. I'll send you the morphed runway videos by today," the intern wrote, as per the screenshot.
'When u are interning somewhere there is a responsibility too...3 days before a big event u gone missing...anyways ur choice...this shows seriousness towards ur work," the boss replied.

'If you need leaves...'
As the post went viral, social media users slammed the boss for being rude, while others suggested that the intern leave the place for other opportunities.
"If the place falls apart by an intern taking a day off, they really shouldn't be keeping interns!" said one user, while another added: "Whether you are an intern or an employee, it doesn't matter. If you need leaves for family, take them without guilt and without being sorry."
A third commented: "Stop doing unpaid internships. It is a reflection of their work culture. A lot of companies simply hire interns to replace their full time employees."
A fourth said: "Any company doing anything over WhatsApp is straight on my unworkable place list."

The lower prices and attractive designs of PoP idols have made them a preferred choice among many Ganesh pandal organizers in cities like Vizag and Vijayawada. According to idol makers and vendors, the majority of customers prefer PoP idols due to their affordability and aesthetic appeal. Only a small percentage of customers opt for eco-friendly idols made from natural clay. Ramesh, a Ganesh idol maker and vendor at Yendada in Vizag, said that out of ten customers, only two buy eco-friendly idols. The prices of both PoP and eco-friendly idols have increased this year due to a surge in material costs. Price of PoP idols have increased by 10-15%, while eco-friendly idols have become 20% more expensive. An 8-foot PoP Ganesh idol costs between Rs 25,000 to Rs 30,000, while an eco-friendly idol of the same size costs between Rs 40,000 to Rs 50,000, said Ram and Sanjay, idols makers from Rajasthan. Some Ganesh pandal organizers are willing to spend up to Rs 2-3 lakh to procure large PoP idols from Hyderabad. Anil Kumar, a member of a Ganesh pandal, said that using PoP idols eliminates the need for elaborate decorations, which can be expensive. While some idol makers have minimized the use of PoP by 10-20%, very few have made significant reductions by using a mixture of PoP and clay. Social activists have expressed concerns about the environmental impact of PoP idols, which are not biodegradable and contribute to water pollution when immersed in water bodies. The Andhra Pradesh police have permitted the setup of over 16,000 Ganesh pandals across the state, including around 3,700 in Vizag city.

State sees 47% surge in marine fish production amid national decline
Mumbai: Amid a nationwide decline in marine fish production, Maharashtra has defied the trend with a 47% increase in 2024, according to the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI). While India's total marine fish output dropped nearly 2%, from 3.53 million tons in 2023 to 3.47 million tons in 2024, Maharashtra's landings rose from 2.11 lakh tons to 3.11 lakh tons, the highest increase among all coastal states. In contrast, Gujarat retained its lead in total landings at 754,000 tons, followed by Tamil Nadu (679,000 tons) and Kerala (610,000 tons). Western coastal states such as Karnataka, Goa, and the UT of Daman & Diu recorded production declines, while West Bengal (35%), Tamil Nadu (20%), and Odisha (18%) on the eastern coast reported growth. In Maharashtra, landings of shrimps and cephalopods (squids, octopus, cuttlefish) doubled in 2024. The majority of the catch came from mechanised purse seines, followed by multi-day trawl nets and mechanised dol nets. Mumbai city district contributed 33% of the state's total catch, thanks to its two major harbours, while Ratnagiri accounted for 25%. Aggressive and even illegal fishing methods, including the use of LED lighting to attract premature catch, have played a role. Since Dec 2024, the office of state fisheries minister Nitesh Rane has initiated strict action against such practices. Measures include drone surveillance to monitor coastal waters and detect unauthorised fishing, particularly by out-of-state operators and those using banned LED lights. These interventions have shown positive results within five months. Nationwide, the CMFRI tracked 250,000 fishing trips in 2024. Mechanised boats landed an average of 2,959 kg per trip, compared to 174 kg for motorised and 41 kg for non-motorised boats. Natural disruptions like cyclones Dana, Fungal, Remal, and Asna, along with heatwaves in Andhra Pradesh and Kerala, significantly affected fishing activities. In Maharashtra, Indian mackerel (bangda) led the catch with 293,000 tons, followed by sardines (241,000 tons). Other key species included anchovies (pedve) and silver bellies (mandyali). CMFRI data also revealed national trends: while catches of mackerel, ribbonfish, threadfin breams, oil sardines, non-penaeid shrimp, and cephalopods declined in 2024, catch of small sardines, penaeid shrimp, anchovies, and tunas increased. Overall, west coast landings declined except in Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh, while the east coast showed modest gains. Senior fisheries experts say Maharashtra should learn from Gujarat's sustainable fishing model. Though both states share similar marine geography, Maharashtra trails Gujarat by 4 million tons in fish trade. Fish like pomfrets (Paplet) and black-spotted croakers (Ghol) migrate between the two states' waters because of ecological interdependence.
