Piyush Goyal meets Belgian Defence Minister, Minister-President of Flanders
According to a Ministry of Commerce and Industry release, this engagement follows HRH Princess Astrid of Belgium's March 2025 visit to India, during which her meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi underscored the shared ambition to unlock new avenues for collaboration in trade, technology, defence, agriculture, life sciences, innovation, skilling, and academic exchanges.
The over 300-member Belgian Economic Mission, led by Princess Astrid, infused fresh momentum into this dynamic bilateral relationship.
Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to building on this momentum to forge resilient, future-focused ties that enhance mutual growth and contribute to a more integrated global economic framework, per the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.
The discussions highlighted growing economic synergies and focused on scaling bilateral trade, fostering industrial collaboration, and deepening investments in strategic sectors such as semiconductors, clean energy, defence production, and pharmaceuticals.
The Flanders region, recognised as Belgium's economic engine, was highlighted as a critical partner with its advanced manufacturing ecosystem, R & D infrastructure, and its strategic role as a European gateway, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry said.
With India already the world's fastest-growing major economy and widely expected to remain so over the next two decades ahead--driven by a young, aspirational population and a dynamic reform-oriented environment--the growth story presents an unprecedented opportunity for India and Belgium.
The two sides reaffirmed their shared vision of mutual prosperity and resilient economic cooperation amidst evolving global challenges. Minister Goyal reflected on India's transformative economic journey over the past decade, emphasising reforms that have empowered citizens and entrepreneurs alike. "The last eleven years have not only been about economic upliftment, but about enabling aspirations," he stated.
The meeting also reviewed progress in EU-India Free Trade Agreement (FTA) negotiations, with both parties recognising the need to address tariff and non-tariff barriers to enhance market access. Minister Goyal reiterated India's position as a trusted and long-term economic partner for Europe's growth, remarking, "India is not just a market of the future--it is a collaborator of trust."
Belgium remains one of India's most significant economic partners in Europe. It is India's fifth-largest trading partner within the EU, with bilateral trade reaching USD 15.07 billion in 2023-24. Belgian FDI in India totalled USD 3.94 billion from April 2000 to September 2024, including a remarkable 39 per cent growth--USD 1.1 billion--in the past year alone.
Bilateral cooperation spans a wide array of sectors, including defence manufacturing, green hydrogen, nano-electronics, nuclear medicine, and pharmaceutical R & D, reflecting the expanding depth and strategic nature of the Indo-Belgian economic relationship.
Both sides agreed to strengthen high-level engagements and facilitate regular visits by business delegations to accelerate trade and investment outcomes.

New Delhi: Union home minister Amit Shah slammed the Opposition in Lok Sabha for demanding proof of Operation Sindoor and criticised former home minister P Chidambaram for questioning Pakistani links of terrorists involved in Pahalgam attack. In his 75-minute intervention in the discussion on Operation Sindoor, Shah blamed Nehru-Gandhi family for erroneous decisions in the past and linked them to the current problem of terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir. "If PoK exists today with a separate identity, it is because of Nehru's decision to stop the war in 1948. It was a unilateral ceasefire, which was opposed by Sardar Patel," he said. "In 1948, Indian armed forces were in decisive position to take back PoK but then PM Nehru declared unilateral ceasefire." Tearing into opposition, Shah said, "I was pained yesterday when former Home Minister P Chidambaram raised the question that what was the proof that the Pahalgam terrorists came from Pakistan? What is Chidambaram trying to say? Whom does he want to save? What will you gain by saving Pakistan?" The Home Minister also slammed the then Manmohan Singh government for its response on terror attacks. "Following Operation Sindoor, our DGMO informed the Pak DGMO that India has attacked terror infrastructure on their land as per our right of self-defence. It cannot be like how it happened during Manmohan Singh's government, that terrorists come and kill us and we sit quietly...," Shah said. Following the Opposition's question over efficacy of the Modi government's decision to revoke Article 370, Shah said: "The number of terror attacks have gone down from 7,214 during UPA's regime 2004-14 to 2,150 in our 10 years from 2015-25," said Shah adding, "21 organisations with terror links that had been banned by the current government. "If you have ostrich-like mentality, you will not even be able to see the sun." aid Shah.

Billionaire Elon Musk-led satellite communications company Starlink will be limited to a maximum of 20 lakh connections in India, Union Minister Pemmasani Chandra Sekhar said on Monday, downplaying concerns over its impact on state-run BSNL and other telecom operators. The Minister of State for Telecom made the remarks while speaking on the sidelines of a BSNL review meeting. 'Starlink can have only 20 lakh customers in India and offer up to 200 Mbps speed. That won't affect telecom services,' the minister said. What Will Satcom Services Do? Satcom services are expected to target rural and remote areas where BSNL is known to have a significant presence..A government official mentioned that the limit on Starlink connections is due to its existing capacity. The minister said that the upfront cost for satcom services will be too high and the monthly cost may be around Rs 3,000. The minister also said that BSNL 4G rollout is complete and it does not plan to increase tariffs as of now. 'We want market first. There are no tariff hikes planned,' he said. What Minister Said On BSNL Future Plans? The minister said that BSNL has seen a 20-30 per cent increase in revenue in the first quarter of the current fiscal year due to the rollout of 4G services and technology is settling down. 'Earlier, there were some technical issues but over 90 per cent of them have been sorted out. There were issues around power stations. 30,000 power stations have been replaced with an expenditure of around Rs 600-700 crore,' Pemmasani said, adding that improvement in power supplies has resulted in higher uptime for BSNL networks and enhanced customer's experience. 'Each circle is being given individual targets in terms of increasing subscriber base,' he said, adding that BSNL has had a lot of legacy issues that are being resolved now. When asked about the status of Chinese equipment in BSNL, the minister said that the government plans to continue using indigenous technologies in the state-run firm and it will gradually phase out 2G and 3G equipment and do away with the need for maintenance of that equipment. BSNL has installed 2G and 3G technology using some of the equipment from Chinese vendors, including ZTE. (With Inputs From PTI)

Govt collected Rs 22.21 lakh crore cess during FY2020-25
The government has transferred Rs 24.29 lakh crore cess proceeds to various designated reserve funds during 2019-20 to 2024-25 as against total collection of about Rs 22.21 lakh crore, the finance ministry informed parliament on Tuesday. Responding to a question by Trinamool Congress MP Sushmita Dev, Minister of state for Finance Pankaj Choudhary told Rajya Sabha that the proceeds of such surcharge and cess go towards meeting certain specific needs such as financing of centrally sponsored schemes. The minister did not explain the excess utilisation of taxes over total collection. However, economists said that the same could be due to borrowings by the central government to compensate the states for losses due to implementation of GST. 'The benefits of such expenditure also percolate to the states,' said the minister to a question if the government is considering including them in the divisible pool of taxes shared with the states. Article 270 of the Indian Constitution excludes the surcharge on taxes and duties and any cess levied for specific purposes under any law made by Parliament from the distribution between the Union and states. The minister tabled a chart in parliament showing various cess and surcharge collected from 2020-21 till 2024-25, and the estimated collection for 2025-26. From 2020-21 to 2024-25, the total cess and surcharge collected was Rs 19.4 lakh crore, a third of which has been collected through GST compensation cess. Road and infra cess, which also includes additional duty of excise on petrol and diesel (which were known as road cess before introduction of road and infrastructure cess), accounted for 30% of the total collection of cess and surcharge, health and education cess, and agri infra development cess accounted for 16% each. Cess and surcharge collected through corporate and income tax accounted for Rs 4 lakh crore during 2020-21 to 2024-25.
