509 govt school students in Punjab crack NEET, CM Mann says education key to ending poverty
Chandigarh, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Friday said the state government is adopting "out-of-the-box ideas" to strengthen the education sector, which he described as a key to eradicate poverty and social ills. 509 govt school students in Punjab crack NEET, CM Mann says education key to ending poverty
Addressing a gathering after felicitating students who cleared the NEET exam, Mann said a paradigm shift had taken place in the education sector over the last three years due to revolutionary steps taken by the state government.
Mann said, "This is the red letter day as 509 students from government schools have cracked the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test for admissions into medical colleges," according to an official statement.
He said education, healthcare, infrastructure, industry, sports, employment and the fight against drugs are the government's top priorities.
No freebie or concession cards can eliminate poverty or other social maladies in the state, instead it is education that holds the key that can pull people out of this vicious circle by raising their standard of living, he said.
The chief minister said that his government is tirelessly making efforts to improve the standard of education to empower common people.
For the first time in the state a mass campaign in the form of "Yudh Nashesyan Virudh " has been launched under which drug offenders are being arrested and action is being intensified, he added.
Mann said that after assuming the charge of office his government is trying "to clear the mess created by their predecessors over the past 70 years".
"Some of our youngsters got overage for government jobs due to the lackadaisical approach of previous governments," he said, adding that now under the A government over the past three years 54,000 youths have secured jobs completely on the basis of merit.
Mann said that in a "good omen" for the state, "reverse migration is being witnessed in Punjab as youth are leaving foreign land to join government jobs in the state." It is because the recruitment process is completely transparent.
Due to the efforts of his government the youth's faith in working for the state government have increased, shunning the idea of moving abroad, he said.
However, the chief minister said that a lot of brain drain took place due to the "apathetic approach of the previous regimes due to which a large number of youngsters had earlier migrated from the state".
Mann said since the A government has adopted a course correction, a large number of students are becoming an integral part of the socio-economic development of the state by joining government jobs.
He said that the state government's concerted efforts for empowering women in the state has led to girls excelling in all the fields today and are even outnumbering boys.
Mann further pointed out that his government has appointed seven women officers as deputy commissioners and eight women have been appointed senior superintendents of police.

Punjab CM Mann says Dhuri ROB work to begin soon; Bittu slams CM for taking ‘fake credit'
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Sunday announced that the work on railway overbridge (RoB) in his constituency Dhuri, Sangrur district, would begin soon. Reacting to this, Union Minister of State for Railways and BJP leader Ravneet Singh Bittu slammed Mann for 'taking fake credit' as the 'the Railways, which has to grant an approval for the RoB adjoining Dhuri LC 62A railway crossing, will do it soon — without efforts from Mann or the ruling AAP government'. 'The Mann-led AAP government in Punjab has not sanctioned a single rupee for the work,' Bittu said. Asserting that 'necessary clearance' was granted for the work by the Ministry of Railways after 'persistent efforts by the state government', Mann said in a statement: 'The state-of-the-art RoB, which will be constructed at the level crossing (phatak) no. 62A, will play a crucial role in resolving traffic congestion in the Malwa region, particularly for commuters in the Dhuri segment. The total cost of the project is Rs 54.76 crore, which will be funded entirely by the state government.' He also said that 'once initiated, the project will be completed within 18 months. Groundwork began in 2024, but the progress has been delayed due to the pending final railway permission/ NOC since March 2025… The state government pursued the matter diligently, and with required approvals from the Railways, the project work will commence shortly.' Terming Mann's remarks 'misleading', Bittu said: 'In the past three years, Mann has not provided a single rupee to the Railways for cost-sharing overbridge projects across the state. If he had even sent Rs 54.76 lakh, he would have held a press conference. This Rs 54.76-crore claim is pure optics. Can the CM tell in which head this amount is lying, and why it has not been disbursed till today.' Bittu further alleged: 'A few residents met me very recently, and after listening to their grievances, I took up the issue at the highest level immediately. Despite being the MLA from Dhuri, the CM has done nothing to address this long-pending demand… Now that the Railways has taken the initiative, Mann is shamelessly trying to take credit.' Slamming Mann for his alleged neglect towards Dhuri, Bittu said while the previous chief ministers made significant efforts to develop their home constituencies, Mann failed to do so. 'He has not held even a single public interaction in Dhuri after becoming the CM… The bus stand is in poor condition, and the local hospital lacks basic infrastructure too.' 'I had received multiple representations from local BJP leaders and citizen groups, urging immediate action on the overbridge as the 62A railway crossing remains closed for hours, effectively cutting the town into two and causing daily chaos for commuters,' Bittu said, adding residents often have to wait three to four hours to cross the railway tracks.

DMK govt ‘running on commission, collection and corruption', says EPS
KALLAKURICHI: AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami on Sunday alleged that the DMK government is 'running on commission, collection, and corruption'. Speaking at a welfare assistance distribution event in Ulundurpet, Palaniswami said, 'Corruption has worsened under the DMK regime. Every department is affected. No land registration happens without bribes. Even at Tasmac, a bribe of Rs 10 is collected per bottle. Law and order has also deteriorated. Movement of banned substances has increased.' Palaniswami said no one can take over the AIADMK. 'MK Stalin is unable to tolerate our alliance with the BJP. He says the AIADMK is finished, but he is daydreaming. Look at the gathering here, everyone should work for the victory of AIADMK and alliance candidates. Youth and women should work to ensure our victory in all five Assembly constituencies of Kallakurichi district.' Palaniswami said even after MGR's death, DMK patriarch M Karunanidhi could not destroy the AIADMK. After Jayalalithaa's demise, Stalin tried to topple the AIADMK but failed. 'In 2026 election, the AIADMK will win and form the government with a clear majority,' Palaniswami asserted. Responding to Stalin's repeated remarks that AIADMK lost 10 elections under his leadership, Palaniswami said, 'How many times did the DMK lose from 2011 to 2021? In 2011, the DMK couldn't even sit in the opposition benches. The DMK came to power with false promises. The DMK has failed to fulfil its poll promises of getting NEET exemption, increasing working days under 100-day job scheme, education loan waiver and restoration of old pension scheme.'
