49-year-old TN woman fulfils dream to study medicine, cracks NEET with daughter
In a heartwarming story of perseverance and determination, a 49-year-old woman from Tenkasi, Tamil Nadu, is set to begin her medical studies, fulfilling a dream she has cherished for more than 15 years. Amuthavalli, a physiotherapist by profession, always aspired to become a doctor but could never pursue her ambition due to personal and financial constraints. While helping her daughter prepare for the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET), she rekindled her long-standing dream and decided to appear for the exam herself. Speaking about her journey, Amuthavalli said, "I've been working as a physiotherapist for years, but I always wanted to study medicine. This dream started 15 years ago, but I never had the opportunity. When I began preparing alongside my daughter, I realised it was now or never. She gave me the courage to try again." Although Amuthavalli scored 147 marks in NEET, she qualified under the Persons with Disabilities (PwD) category and has secured admission to the Government Medical College in Virudhunagar. Her daughter, Samyuktha Krupalini, who scored an impressive 460 marks in the same exam, has taken part in the ongoing general counselling process and is expected to secure a seat in one of Tamil Nadu's medical colleges. Interestingly, the mother-daughter duo has decided not to attend the same college even if they both get admission offers. "We want to study in different medical colleges so that we can focus independently on our studies," Amuthavalli said with a smile. The story of Amuthavalli's perseverance has inspired many in her hometown of Tenkasi. Locals and well-wishers have lauded her determination to pursue higher education at an age when most people are busy fulfilling family responsibilities. Medical education experts have also hailed her success as a testament to the fact that age should never be a barrier to learning. "Her story will motivate many others who may have left their dreams behind," said a senior doctor at Virudhunagar Medical College. With both mother and daughter likely to begin their MBBS journeys this year, their story stands as a shining example of how hard work and dedication can make even the longest-standing dreams come true.

NEET PG 2025: Distant Exam Centres Trigger Widespread Anxiety Among Aspirants
Last Updated: IMA-JDN has urgently appealed to Union Health Minister J P Nadda, raising serious concerns over NEET PG 2025 exam centre allotment and its impact on affected candidates. The Indian Medical Association–Junior Doctors' Network (IMA–JDN) has submitted an urgent representation to Union Health Minister J P Nadda, voicing serious concerns regarding the allotment of NEET-PG examination centres. This comes in response to widespread complaints from aspirants across the country who have been assigned test centres in distant states, sparking distress and anxiety among candidates. With the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test–Postgraduate (NEET-PG) scheduled for 3 August, the IMA–JDN has appealed to the Union Health Ministry to instruct the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) to reopen the portal for changing exam centres. This would allow affected candidates the opportunity to select centres closer to their home state or within nearby regions. In its representation, the IMA–JDN underlined that while some students have been allotted centres in nearby cities, thousands of others have been assigned locations in far-flung states, requiring them to undertake long, expensive, and stressful journeys to unfamiliar places. The doctors' body stated, 'This move is causing much concern, especially among the economically weaker sections, ladies, and those from remote or rural regions." 'This disparity not only affects fairness but could negatively impact students' mental well-being and performance in this critical, once-a-year exam," it said. 'IMA–JDN remains committed to ensuring equity and accessibility in all aspects of medical education and examination systems," the doctors' body added. In the meantime, the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) on 21 July issued the exam intimation slips for NEET PG 2025. The admit cards for NEET PG 2025 are scheduled to be released on 31 July. Simultaneously, the Supreme Court of India has fixed 3 August to hear a batch of petitions related to the transparency of the NEET PG examination process. A bench comprising Justices K Vinod Chandran and NV Anjaria briefly took up the matter, which centres on issues concerning the release of answer keys and the evaluation mechanism followed by the National Board of Examinations (NBE). One of the petitions, filed through advocate Tanvi Dubey, challenges the lack of transparency in the assessment process and seeks various directions to be issued to the NBE. SC issues 15 guidelines to address student suicides, mental health in educational institutions
The Supreme Court on Friday issued 15 interim guidelines to address the rise in student suicides and mental health challenges in educational institutions across India, PTI reported. The guidelines include the appointment of trained counsellors and psychologists, the adoption of a uniform mental health policy and annual reviews of wellness interventions at such institutes. A bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta observed that there was a 'legislative and regulatory vacuum' regarding a unified, enforceable framework for suicide prevention in schools, colleges, coaching centres and similar environments. The court said the guidelines would remain in force and binding until suitable legislation or regulatory frameworks were introduced by the competent authority. The order came in response to an appeal against an Andhra Pradesh High Court decision that had rejected a request to transfer to the Central Bureau of Investigation a probe into the suspicious death of a 17-year-old National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test aspirant in Visakhapatnam. The Supreme Court directed the central agency to take over the investigation, according to The New Indian Express. Mental health safeguards The Supreme Court directed all educational institutions to adopt and implement a uniform mental health policy, drawing from the UMMEED draft guidelines, the Manodarpan initiative and the National Suicide Prevention Strategy. It must be reviewed annually and made publicly available on institutional websites and notice boards. The draft UMMEED, or Understand, Motivate, Manage, Empathise, Empower, Develop guidelines were released in 2023 by the Union Ministry of Education to help prevent student suicides in schools. The Manodarpan initiative was launched to provide psychosocial support during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. The National Suicide Prevention Strategy outlines roles for stakeholders in reducing suicide rates. Among other suggestions, the court said that institutions with more than 100 students must appoint qualified counsellors, psychologists or social workers trained in child and adolescent mental health. Smaller institutions may establish formal referral arrangements with external professionals. The court directed educational and coaching institutions to avoid practices that could harm students' mental well-being, such as public shaming, assigning academic targets that exceed students' capacity and segregating students into batches based on their academic performance. Residential institutions have been advised to install tamper-proof ceiling fans or other safety devices and restrict access to rooftops, balconies and similar high-risk areas to deter impulsive acts of self-harm. The court said that coaching hubs in cities such as Jaipur, Kota, Sikar, Chennai, Hyderabad, Delhi, and Mumbai must implement enhanced mental health protections. All teaching and non-teaching staff must undergo mandatory training twice a year, conducted by certified mental health professionals. These guidelines apply to all public and private schools, colleges, universities and coaching centres.

Furthermore, the education minister stated that an impressive 845 government school students qualified the highly competitive National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET), while 265 students successfully cleared the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE)-Mains this year. This showcases the school education department's commitment to fostering academic excellence and empowering students to excel in the country's most challenging competitive exams, he said.
