
This man with dementia was denied internet due to a phone call confrontation — but he can't remember the call
When Andrew Poisson caled local internet provider MNSi, looking for coverage for his aging parents, he thought it would be simple enough to get their service changed over.
But that's when he says he discovered the household had been "blacklisted" by the provider over a reported phone call confrontation between his stepfather, Don and a company representative, years ago.
But the catch? Don has Alzheimer's and has been losing his memory for more than a decade. He has no recollection of any phone call.
The family's internet went down last week and since it was becoming a more frequent occurrence, decided it was time to switch providers. Poisson contacted MNSI because they have good coverage in the neighbourhood and it's what many of their nieghbours use.
"And when we tried to get them to come out and hook it up, we found out that my parents were blacklisted," Poisson said.
"The only reason they gave was there was some kind of verbal confrontation years ago with my stepfather. My stepfather's 88 years old, he suffers from dementia and he doesn't remember any conversation with them."
Poisson, who is visiting his parents from the U.S., said the company didn't provide any information regarding the refusal, but just mentioned his dad's name.
When he explained Don's disposition in a call Thursday morning, Poisson said it didn't make a difference.
Don also said he doesn't remember that phone conversation.
'Not right'
Kathy Daly, Don's wife, said they had tried to get MNSi services a couple of years ago but were denied for the same reason.
"My husband is the mildest person. He doesn't confront or swear or do any of these things," she said.
"Anybody who knows Don would find it hard to believe that he would have a confrontation with anybody about anything."
Kathy said she asked customer support for a recording of the phone conversation but was told that it had been erased.
"I wish they would come to the house and meet Don and know exactly who they're refusing service to," Poisson said, urging MNSi to make the effort "to at least know the customer".
"It seems very discriminatory and not right."
Poisson said Don is "a wonderful human being" who has done a lot for Windsor.
'Decisions are based solely on the nature of the interactions': MNSi
MNSi will not reveal the specifics of individual customer interactions citing privacy concerns. The company did not directly respond to the family's concerns.
In an emailed statement, company's president and owner Clayton Zekelman said that while they strive to resolve concerns, they cannot tolerate conduct that compromises the well-being or dignity of their team members.
"When decisions are made to refuse service as a result of interactions between customers and our staff, such decisions are based solely on the nature of the interactions and are in no way related to any protected grounds under the Canadian Human Rights Act or applicable provincial human rights legislation," he said.
'Unfair' that a company can't understand
Don worked at CBC Windsor from 1965 until 1990 as a sports broadcaster.
Kathy says she wants to know why the company can't be more understanding.
"The whole thing just seems unfair and I don't know why," she said. "What could Don possibly say, that would be so bad as to deny service. It just does not make sense in my mind."

Federal investigators continue to probe site of fatal N.W.T. helicopter crash
A pair of investigators from the Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) will continue to photograph and take measurements on Wednesday of the wreckage from a fatal helicopter crash near Behchokǫ̀, N.W.T. Jon Lee, the board's western regional manager, told CBC News the small team arrived in Yellowknife around noon Tuesday and were on scene during the afternoon and early evening gathering data and statements from eye witnesses. "Today, that's going to continue — they're going to be working with Great Slave Helicopters collecting information about both the pilot and also the technical information around the helicopter itself," Lee said. RCMP responded to the crash site, about 1.5 kilometres from Highway 3 near Behchokǫ̀, at noon Monday. They said they did CPR on the pilot, the only person in the aircraft, but he died from his injuries. The identity of that individual has not been made public. CBC News has reached out to Great Slave Helicopters about the incident. As of Wednesday morning, the company had not done an interview or made a public statement about it. N.W.T. Fire has said the helicopter was not a part of its wildfire operations. Lee said the crash happened in a burned brush area 10 kilometres east of the Behchokǫ̀'s airstrip. He said the aircraft was substantially damaged. After investigators are done assessing the site, Lee said the next step will be bringing the helicopter back to the Transportation Safety Board's offices in Edmonton for a more detailed technical examination. That will mean co-ordinating recovery with whatever salvage company is hired by an insurance adjuster, he said. Lee said their investigation will be meticulous and scientific. The TSB will collect information about the people involved, the aircraft itself, and the environment — both the operational environment and the weather. They'll determine whether any of those things contributed to the crash, and from there "areas of concern and safety issues start to emerge from that data collection." Lee said it's hard to know how long an investigation will take in the early days — it could be a year, or two years. But, he said, if something emerges from the investigation that requires immediate attention, that will happen right away — Transport Canada, Great Slave Helicopters and aircraft manufacturers don't need a final report to come out before they take action.

Meal service dropped for seniors in rural areas around Moncton
Earlier this month, Joan McMackin received a note with the meal that was delivered to her door as usual. "Reminder: Please note this is your last meal delivery," the note said. For about a year, the 87-year-old widow in Petitcodiac received five meals a week from the United Way seniors' meal program. For several years, the United Way Centraid, which serves Greater Moncton and Southeastern New Brunswick, has offered a meal delivery service for seniors in Moncton, Dieppe and Riverview. Two years ago with the help of a federal grant, the service expanded to include surrounding rural communities. The grant was to last two years only. No explanation from United Way Now the two years are up, and Brent McMackin, Joan's son, is saddened by the news his mother won't be able to receive well-balanced meals throughout the week. "You could almost say it was life-changing, you know, because it made it so easy," said McMackin, who is semi-retired. United Way declined an interview request and just confirmed in a statement that the pilot project was over. "We recognize the ongoing need in outlying communities and are actively exploring new funding opportunities to expand the service area in the future." According to a social media post from January 2025, the United Way in Moncton was delivering about 3,000 meals a week, offering five to 10 meals a week to each recipient in need. It wasn't clear how many of the recipients lived in rural areas. McMackin and his mother both live in Petitcodiac, about 40 kilometres from Moncton. The prepared and frozen meals were delivered from Moncton to Joan's home once a week. Joan is unable to cook for herself consistently throughout the week. While her son checks in on her everyday, it becomes challenging to make and deliver meals to her on a regular basis. McMackin's late father-in-law was also a recipient of the meal delivery service. For him, it was even more essential because, as a widower and a senior with limited physical capabilities, he was unable to prepare his own food. "As for a lot of senior individuals, it's difficult for them to prepare and to pay for a balanced diet," McMackin said. The meals that Joan received cost her up to $2 each, her son said. For seniors needing affordable meal services, the program was an excellent option, he said. The notice United Way sent to recipients said that all seniors receiving the meals would be added to the waiting list for the provincial seniors' meal program. Seniors in rural areas lack access Without the program to serve meals to seniors in rural areas, more seniors could end up in hospital, said sociologist Katharine Dunbar of Mount Allison University, who focuses on health inequities Dunbar said that meal delivery services are essential to rural communities because they maintain the health and well-being of older residents. Since rural areas have less access to health services, ensuring nutritious and consistent meals for them is a part of keeping them healthy. Dunbar speculated that the United Way simply couldn't keep up with the demand. "Community organizations and community services tend to sort of work to fill those gaps that are left as a result of not having adequate funding through the provincial or territorial government," Dunbar said. "There's fewer organizations working in rural areas. And so what you often find is that one organization is providing a whole variety of services to members of the community." Without the meal service reaching rural communities like Peticodiac, McMackin hopes to find a permanent solution for his mother. "I think it was a valuable program," he said. "And it can be provided at a reasonable cost. And I think that's probably already been proven that it should continue."
