MELAKA : The case of a trainee with disabilities who was allegedly bullied at the Durian Tunggal GiatMara is an old one that has already been resolved, according to state education, higher education and religious affairs committee chairman Rahmad Mariman.
He said the incident took place in February but only gained attention recently after going viral on social media.
He said the students involved were summoned by Majlis Amanah Rakyat (Mara) following an investigation.
'Mara has recorded statements from all parties, and the students involved have since apologised. They are continuing their skills courses and undergoing plant training, and the case is considered closed.
'The trainee who was allegedly bullied did not sustain any injuries,' Rahmad told reporters here today.
Mara chairman Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki had said in a Facebook post yesterday that there would be no compromise for anyone involved in bullying of any kind, whether physical or psychological, at any Mara educational institution.
'The Mara management at all levels and within its educational institutions fully understands my stance. The strictest action will be taken if there is evidence of misconduct or criminal bullying,' he said.
The media reported that a young man had uploaded a two-minute video featuring a disabled student with learning difficulties who claimed he had been bullied at the Durian Tunggal GiatMara in Melaka.
The young man had expressed shock after meeting the student at a badminton court and hearing about the incident firsthand.

Police Close In On Mob Killing After Lewd Act At Jasin Supermart, Seven Arrested

ALOR GAJAH, July 28 (Bernama) -- A joblessman was confirmed dead after he was allegedly beaten by a furious mob, following a lewd act he committed in the parking lot of a supermarket in Jasin yesterday, said Melaka police chief Datuk Dzulkhairi Mukhtar. He said in the incident at about 9 pm, the 51-year-old victim died at the scene due to severe bodily injuries. He has two previous records under Section 377D of the Penal Code for committing gross indecency in a public place in 2003 and 2024. "Based on early investigations, the victim is said to have committed an act of gross indecency at 7.26 pm before he was chased and assaulted by several individuals. "The victim tried to escape for about 200 metres, including a desperate leap into the river, before being caught by the public and beaten again," he said after officiating at the Melaka Schools Sports Council Athletics Championships at the Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM) in Durian Tunggal here today. He said seven men aged between 20s to 50s, including a Pakistani national, were remanded for seven days starting today to assist in the investigation under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder. In a separate case, Dzulkhairi said a motorcyclist in his 30s was remanded for three days from today for beating a man in his 20s in a fight near Bulatan Kancil in the Stadthuys compound at Banda Hilir yesterday. He said the incident allegedly occurred when the suspect and 17 of his biker friends were fined by the Melaka Historic City Council (MBMB) enforcement officers for violating the Vehicle Free Zone (ZBK) in the area with their vehicles. He said the MBMB enforcement officers had asked the group of motorcyclists to leave, but they were ignored before they were issued summonses for ignoring council orders. "The group led by the suspect then tore up the summonses and a confrontation broke out between them and another group of bikers.

Concern for the animals - Endangered wildlife found shot in Laos' Salavan despite stricter conservation laws

The red-shanked douc langur. -- Photo: New England Primate Conservancy VIENTIANE (Laotian Times): Salavan Province in Laos is once again in the spotlight after the discovery of two protected wildlife species, one Greater Hog Badger and three Red-shanked Douc Langurs, found dead in the forest last week. The find, shared by a local resident via a now-deleted Facebook post, has sparked widespread concern across social media, with citizens demanding urgent action from authorities who, so far, appear unaware of the details of the incident. News of the wildlife killings quickly spread online, sparking frustration and outrage among the public. The hashtag #Saveລິງຂາແດງ and #SAVEtheRedShankedDoucLangur began trending as social media users demanded that authorities take immediate and stronger action to protect endangered species. 'What a pity! Protected wildlife in Salavan has been killed. Related sectors, please investigate, because these animals are rare and worth preserving for future generations to see,' one Facebook user wrote on a private post. Echoing this sentiment, the Facebook page 'Thatsamphang Village' stressed the ecological value of Laos's wildlife: 'Wildlife is a valuable natural resource and is of great importance to the ecosystem. It is not only a part of biodiversity but also an indicator of the health of the forest and environment. Moreover, in Laos, we have many unique and rare protected species, which are national treasures that all Lao people should help conserve and preserve.' Species Status Under Scrutiny Both the Red-shanked Douc Langur and the Greater Hog Badger are listed as protected under Lao law and vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) due to declining populations caused by habitat loss and poaching. The Red-shanked Douc Langur, often considered one of the most beautiful primates in the world, is known for its maroon-red legs and golden-orange face. Native to parts of Laos, Vietnam, and Cambodia, this species has suffered a population decline of up to 80 percent in the past 30 years, largely due to deforestation, illegal hunting, and the wildlife trade. The Greater Hog Badger, another protected species in Laos, is also found in forested regions such as the Xe Sap National Protected Area in Salavan. While sightings are reported across the country, little is known about its current population trends due to limited data and research. This incident comes just weeks after the Lao government introduced a tougher regulation aimed at curbing natural resource crimes. On 7 July, the Office of the Supreme People's Prosecutor announced it would begin replacing administrative fines with criminal prosecution for violations involving forests, wildlife, and natural resources. Despite this policy shift, illegal hunting and unauthorized access to protected areas appear to persist, raising questions about enforcement and public awareness of wildlife protection laws. - Laotian Times/ANN

Theft by drug addicts drives Kedah crime spike, says police chief

ALOR SETAR: Theft committed by drug addicts has emerged as the primary factor behind the surge in index crime cases in Kedah, according to state police chief CP Adzli Abu Shah. From January 1 to July 27, Kedah recorded 2,852 index crime cases, with nearly half linked to theft by drug users. 'Kedah police will maintain the focus outlined by former police chief Datuk Fisol Salleh, which is to eradicate drug-related crime,' Adzli said. He stressed that addressing drug addiction could significantly reduce crime rates. 'We believe that if drug issues can be tackled and eliminated as much as possible, the overall index crime rate in Kedah can be brought down,' he added. Adzli's remarks followed Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail's call for Kedah to intensify efforts against drug abuse. The minister had urged the state to exit the top four rankings for drug addiction during the 2025 National Anti-Drug Day celebration in Jitra last Friday. Separately, Adzli assured that Kedah police are reinforcing border security despite the Thailand-Cambodia conflict being distant from Malaysia's northern border. 'Precautionary steps are being taken by strengthening security at Malaysia's border checkpoints,' he said. He emphasized the need for vigilance, acknowledging support from agencies like the Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency. 'We must not let our guard down. We are committed to ensuring the country's borders remain secure,' he stated. Earlier, Adzli attended a ceremony marking his official appointment as Kedah police chief, promoted to Commissioner of Police. Perlis deputy police chief SAC Baderulhisham Baharudin was also appointed as Kedah's new deputy police chief, rising to Deputy Commissioner of Police. - Bernama
