Goaltenders have become one of the hottest commodities in the 2025 NHL offseason. With the Florida Panthers lifting their second straight Stanley Cup, teams quickly turned to free agency to stay competitive. However, the limited number of experienced goaltenders available has sparked desperation across the league.
According to the Associated Press' Stephen Whyno, fewer than a dozen goalies from the 2024-25 season were available in free agency. That's alarmingly low for a league with 32 teams all needing depth between the pipes. The shortage became even more evident when Marc-André Fleury's agent, Allan Walsh, revealed that five teams reached out on July 1 asking if the retired goaltender would consider returning.

Despite a first-round playoff exit against the Vegas Golden Knights, his career ended with immense respect. Yet, the fact that teams were willing to offer him one-year deals days after retirement highlights just how desperate the market has become.
While Fleury has no intention of returning, his brief stint with Team Canada at the IIHF World Championship likely added to speculation. Teams saw an opening and took their shot—but were ultimately turned down.
In the meantime, goalie movement across the NHL has been rapid. John Gibson was traded to the Detroit Red Wings, while Dan Vladar signed with the Flyers and David Rittich joined the Islanders. The Devils extended Jake Allen on a five-year, $9 million contract, and the Canucks kept Thatcher Demko.

The Edmonton Oilers, despite back-to-back Eastern Conference Final appearances, remain a cautionary tale. Stuart Skinner's playoff inconsistency, especially his six-goal Game 1 collapse against the Kings exposed their goaltending vulnerability.

British Grand Prix 2025 Qualifying: Max Verstappen beats Britons Lando Norris and Lewis Hamilton to grab pole

Image credit: Formula 1/X The Britons dominated the first two free practice sessions on Friday, but it was Dutch driver Max Verstappen who clinched pole position in the British Grand Prix 2025 Qualifying session on Saturday. He will be joined on the front row by this season's leading driver, Oscar Piastri, who qualified second. His teammate, Lando Norris, starts close behind in third and remains one of the favorites to win his home race at the Silverstone Circuit. British F1 Grand Prix Qualifying results Max Verstappen's pole at Silverstone came as a surprise, as the Red Bull driver had failed to impress during any of the practice sessions. This marks his fourth pole of the season. He has won two races so far and has now set the tone for the British GP final on Sunday. Interestingly, Mercedes driver George Russell, who also struggled during the practice sessions, managed to secure fourth place on the grid. Like Lando Norris and Lewis Hamilton, this Briton is now considered a strong contender for the podium at Silverstone. Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton made a strong start to his home weekend by topping the first free practice session (FP1) on Friday, but he ultimately qualified fifth. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo His teammate, Charles Leclerc, who had won FP3 earlier in the day, will start sixth. Rookies Kimi Antonelli of Mercedes and Oliver Bearman of Haas secured the seventh and eighth spots on the grid, respectively. They are followed by Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso in ninth and Alpine's Pierre Gasly in tenth. There is some bad news for both of them as Antonelli has a three-place grid drop for hitting Verstappen during the Austrian Grand Prix and Bearman has been given a 10-place grid penalty for a red flag infringement in FP3. Alpine's Franco Colapinto, however, couldn't finish the session after crashing into the chicane. His car spun out of control and ended up crashing into the barrier amid a large cloud of dust, forcing him to retire.
