Social media reacts to Brice Williams finding a home with the Detroit Pistons

USA Todaya day ago

Former Nebraska basketball star Brice Williams signed a contract with the Detroit Pistons on Friday afternoon. Williams will get a chance to continue his basketball career after a successful 2024-25 campaign with the Huskers. He averaged 20.4 points, 4.1 rebounds, 2.9 assists, and 1.1 steals per game. He also proved to be an efficient shooter, shooting 38.5% from three-point range.
Williams transferred from Charlotte before the 2023-24 season and quickly established himself as a key scorer for the Nebraska basketball program. He was able to acclimate himself to Fred Hoiberg's offense and provide scoring touch both from beyond the arc and with his midrange game.
Social media was excited for Williams to find an NBA home after completing a successful run with the Huskers. We've selected some of the best reactions from social media, which are available below.

Kyren Williams ranks last among RBs in this new rushing metric

Is Williams due for a regression in 2025? Kyren Williams is quite the polarizing player for the Los Angeles Rams. While fans love his hard running style and nose for the end zone, many have reservations about the Rams potentially giving him a lucrative contract extension. There's no denying that Williams is a productive player, but he isn't close to being one of the most explosive backs in football – which is perfectly fine. He gets the hard-earned yards and moves the chains in short-yardage situations. He simply doesn't create many big plays. A new rushing metric developed by Chris Trapasso puts into perspective where Williams ranks in terms of tackle avoidance and explosiveness. Spoiler: It's not great. It measures a running back's missed tackle forced rate, as well as the number of runs that went for 15-plus yards. It's called ATEX, and this is the formula. (Missed Tackle Forced % × 0.4) + (High Impact Tote % × 0.6) MTF rate is self-explanatory. And HIT % is the amount of 15+ yard runs from a back divided by total carries during the regular season. Among the 23 running backs with at least 200 carries last season, Williams had the worst ATEX of anyone. His ATEX was 7.47, which was far worse than the next-closest player, Jonathan Taylor (8.12). Aaron Jones was seventh-worst in this category and even his ATEX was 9.33. For reference, Derrick Henry's ATEX was 14.58 and Saquon Barkley's was 11.54, so both were significantly higher than Williams'. Essentially, this confirms what many people already knew about Williams. He doesn't break off many long runs and he doesn't force many missed tackles. Of his 316 carries last season, only six of them went for at least 15 yards. Among the 27 running backs with at least 185 carries last season, Williams ranked 24th in yards after contact per attempt (2.72). His elusiveness rating from Pro Football Focus was only 42.8, which was also 24th out of 27 qualified running backs. He provides a lot of value to the Rams but making him one of the highest-paid players at his position could be a mistake if Los Angeles goes down that road. Report: Pistons Could Pursue Intriguing Trade With Heat

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Heading into the 2025 NBA offseason, both the Detroit Pistons and Miami Heat are looking to make moves. With the Eastern Conference wide open following the trio of injuries to Damian Lillard, Jayson Tatum, and Tyrese Haliburton, teams within the conference see an opportunity to be aggressive. Last season, both teams were playoff squads. With the right moves, they could very well take a step forward into being legitimate NBA Finals contenders. Could the two squads come together on a potential trade? Read more: Report: Lakers, Deandre Ayton Rumors Receive Massive Update According to a report from longtime NBA insider Marc Stein, the Pistons could look into acquiring Duncan Robinson via a sign-and-trade with the Heat. "The Pistons, meanwhile, are likewise said to be weighing a run at Miami's Duncan Robinson to potentially fill their sudden need for shooting in addition to the interest in LeVert," Stein wrote. "Robinson opted Sunday to bypass his $19.9 million player option for next season, but the move was made, sources said, with the expectation that the Heat and Robinson would work together on a new deal or pursue his exit via sign-and-trade." Detroit suffered a disappointing update on free agent wing Malik Beasley on Sunday as well. It was reported that he is facing major off the court issues. Robinson would be an interesting pickup for the Pistons. He's known for being an elite three-point shooter, which is something Detroit could definitely use more of in order to compete at the highest level in the conference. During the 2024-25 NBA season with Miami, Robinson played in 74 games and made 37 starts. He averaged 11 points, 2.4 assists, and 2.3 rebounds, while shooting 43.7 percent from the floor and knocking down 39.3 percent of his three-point attempts. There is a chance that Robinson could simply end up re-signing with the Heat. However, if the two sides can't work something out, the door could open up for the Pistons to pursue him via a sign-and-trade. While there is no clear direction with this situation, it's one to keep a close eye on. Robinson would be a very intriguing target for Detroit and would bring the elite three-point shooter the team would be missing if Beasley doesn't return.
