'Not the End of the Story:' An Even Crazier Corvette ZR1X Could Still Happen

Motor 12 days ago
With 1,250 horsepower from a hybridized V-8, the new
ZR1X
is the pinnacle of the C8 Corvette—the culmination of all things possible. At least, so we thought.
Even as the fastest, quickest, and most powerful performance car the company has ever produced, Chevrolet seemingly isn't satisfied. In a recent interview with
Top Gear
, chief engineer Tony Roma hinted at the possibility of an even more ridiculous Corvette down the line.
"The ZR1X is not the end of the story," he says, "it's just the latest chapter."

While not an outright confirmation that Chevy is working on a more potent ZR1 or ZR1X, Roma's quotes do indicate that the company is at least exploring ways to extract even more out of the C8 platform.
One thing that Roma does say, though, is that he and his team want to make sure that the ZR1X is even faster than the standard ZR1, which hit 233 miles per hour at the ATP Automotive Testing facility in Papenburg, Germany, earlier this year. He said:
'I think we are going to continue to make the car faster for those bragging rights, because our customers appreciate that. It's the same with any performance car manufacturer—we push each other with Nürburgring lap times for that reason.'
As of yet, Chevrolet hasn't topped out the ZR1X. But the company is confident it should exceed the ZR1's 233-mph speed.
As for the Nurburgring, Ford currently holds the fastest lap time for an American car, with the Mustang GTD lapping the Green Hell in 6 minutes, 52.072 seconds. Chevrolet has that record in its sights with the ZR1X.
"We've done some testing, and all I can say is… stay tuned," Roma tells
Top Gear
. "We want to be the fastest American car—that's an accolade we'd love to have. Again, it comes down to theory. None of our customers will go and run a sub-seven-minute lap time, but they want to know if they could."
We'll definitely stay tuned, indeed.

Memphis receives two-year probation, fine from NCAA due to academic integrity violations

The University of Memphis was placed on two years probation and fined as a result of academic-integrity violations involving a counselor, softball players and men's basketball players, the NCAA announced Wednesday. The punishments were handed down after the NCAA determined former academic counselor Leslie Brooks paid two softball student-athletes to complete course work and provide quiz and test answers to a player on the men's basketball team. As a result of those findings, the school was placed on two years of probation, and received a fine of $30,000, The university was also fined one percent of the combined men's basketball and softball budgets. Brooks received a 10-year show-cause order for her involvement in the scandal. The school will also vacate all records for the games in which the men's basketball player competed while he was ineligible. This story will be updated.

Jalen Williams Makes Huge Personal Announcement After Great Thunder Season

Jalen Williams Makes Huge Personal Announcement After Great Thunder Season originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Jalen Williams has had an incredible few months. He has made All-NBA honors, All-Defensive honors, won an NBA championship with the Oklahoma City Thunder and, now, signed a $287 million contract extension with the franchise. The Thunder, unsurprisingly, rewarded Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Chet Holmgren and Williams each with massive contract extensions after the trio led the franchise to its first title since moving to Oklahoma City in 2008. Williams averaged 21.6 points, 5.3 rebounds and 5.1 assists per game in his third season in the NBA. He even had an iconic 40-point performance during the NBA Finals. There is absolutely no doubt that the Santa Clara product, whom the Thunder selected No. 12 overall in the 2022 draft, will have a lengthy, successful career to add to his already-impressive resume. Williams makes big personal announcement After adding plenty of hardware to his trophy shelf and landing a massive contract extension, Williams gets to do something every kid dreams of. As he revealed in an exclusive interview with TMZ, the Thunder star will be able to retire both of his parents. "It's surreal," Williams said to TMZ. "I know everybody kind of uses that term, but it's wild because it happened really fast, like within the span of three years, my life is completely different." "But yeah, I mean, it's cool. I've been fortunate enough to retire my parents." Williams will be earning a hefty salary through 2031 and beyond, and every bit of it has been deserved. He's been one of the best stories since arriving in the NBA three years back and ascending to superstardom. Now Williams, along with Gilgeous-Alexander and Holmgren, will keep the Thunder in title contention for years to come. The journey begins this fall, when a new season begins and the team aims to go back-to-back with a very similar roster. Branden Carlson's 2025 Summer League debut had this Hall of Famer questioning why he wasn't drafted

After an ankle sprain delayed Branden Carlson's debut in the 2025 NBA Summer League, the former Runnin' Ute made good on his first game of the summer showcase. The 7-foot center scored 23 points while adding seven rebounds and two blocks to just one turnover for Oklahoma City in the Thunder's 92-75 win over the Orlando Magic on Tuesday at the Thomas & Mack Center. Carlson, who won an NBA championship as a rookie with the Thunder as a two-way player, shot 9 of 13 from the field and 4 of 6 from 3-point range in 19 minutes of action. His performance had a Hall of Famer singing his praises. Former Detroit Pistons guard Isiah Thomas, working as an analyst during the ESPN broadcast, questioned why Carlson wasn't a draft pick coming out of Utah. 'I just want to know what the evaluators, when they were evaluating him, were saying, 'Well, he can't do this,'' Thomas said of Carlson, according to Sports Illustrated's Cole Forsman. 'Because I haven't seen anything he can't do.' 'There are a lot of NBA evaluators and scouts who don't know what the (expletive) they're looking at, and that's the fact. We know there's no way that a kid like this shouldn't have been drafted.' Carlson prepped at Bingham High in South Jordan, Utah, and spent his entire collegiate career at the University of Utah. He left Salt Lake City as the program's career blocks leader (241) and No. 5 all-time in scoring (1,892). He went undrafted last offseason and initially signed a two-way contract with Toronto. After the Raptors waived him in October, the Thunder signed Carlson to a two-way deal in November. Carlson ended up starring for the Oklahoma City Blue in the G League, while also playing in 32 games for the Thunder, who went on to win the NBA title. He averaged 3.8 points, 1.7 rebounds and 0.4 assists while shooting 44.3% from the field during his time with the Thunder as a rookie. Last week, Carlson signed a two-way contract again with Oklahoma City. 'The talent evaluators should be ashamed of themselves for not seeing Carlson,' Thomas said in the fourth quarter, per Forsman. Later, after Carlson hit a 25-footer, Thomas added, 'I don't even know what to say no more. I just want to know (from) the 30 teams that were looking at him — what didn't they like?' Carlson and the Thunder play again Wednesday, facing the New Orleans Pelicans at 7:30 p.m. MDT. The game will be televised on NBA TV.
