West Virginia's running back room is thin, rebounding after rough second practice

Dominion Posta day ago
MORGANTOWN – West Virginia's second practice wasn't the best. Rich Rodriguez wasn't happy because the team didn't take any steps forward, and more importantly, the team was soft.
A position he pointed out was the running backs. Rodriguez said only two of his four running backs made it to the end of the second practice without 'tapping out,' or going to trainers for injuries.
'I told those two, that's pretty good,' Rodriguez said. 'Not going to tell you who they are. But you know, there are still 4,000 kids in the portal… I can play a game without running backs. I got running backs here. I got a good group. We finished with two, so you think I'm not going to talk to my recruiting staff this afternoon? We're running a business.'
The running back position might be the most important in Rodriguez's offense. Rodriguez loves to run the football. Last year at Jacksonville State, the Gamecocks rushed the ball 646 times, ranking third in the NCAA, behind military academies, Army and Air Force.
Having just two backs won't get West Virginia through the season, and Rodriguez thinks they might need to add some more. There are more backs listed on the roster, seven to be exact and transfer back Tye Edwards is still dealing with NCAA waiver issues. Right now, Rodriguez named four backs who are practicing after practice No. 4
'Jahiem, Hubbard, Clay Ash, Kannon, right?' Rodriguez said. 'I think those are just the four. Numbers are a little bit less. We may add a guy or two there. Because we got to have more guys at running back. But they've done a good job. Larry's an experienced coach, picked up our system really well… It's a pretty good group.'
Since Rodriguez called the backs out in practice No. 2, they've improved, which is a good sign because of how important they are to Rodriguez's offense. They're still learnin, though.
Luckily, Rodriguez's running backs have one of the best running backs coaches in the nation to learn from, Larry Porter. Porter came over from North Carolina and recently produced first-round running back talent Omarion Hampton, who was the second running back selected in the 2025 NFL Draft behind Ashton Jeanty with the 22nd overall pick.
Through the first four practices, Porter is doing a lot of installing and teaching the backs their role in Rodriguez's offense.
'I feel like it's my job to teach them what to do and how to do it, and also the expectations that we have as a team as we try to build this culture,' Porter said. 'But overall, that's kind of where it is, building a foundation of the standard that we need to be successful throughout the course of a season.'
Porter does have some experience in the room. WVU leading rusher Jahiem White highlights the room after being named to the first team preseason All-Big 12 in early July. Porter said White has a 'good' skill set, but still has some to learn.
'I think he's an elite processor from the standpoint of being able just to navigate space in front of him,' Porter said. 'But I think that he has a lot of room to grow in every area, and he's learning how to push himself, and we're trying to get him to that point. But he has a lot of room to grow. I think he's just scratching the surface of what he can ultimately become. But again, it's that standard, and it's our job or my job to take him where he can't take himself, and that's kind of what we were working through right now.'
It seemed like White had the starting job secured, but Rodriguez made it known that every position is up for grabs, even White's job. Right now, the other three fighting for the spot are Ferris State transfer redshirt junior Kannon Katzer, sophomore Clay Ash and redshirt freshman Diore Hubbard. Then, there are players, like Edwards, who have to work by themselves because the waivers haven't been accepted yet. Rodriguez said that's out of his hands.
'We have Kannon, who has come in and is really working hard,' Porter said. 'Hubbard, who was here last year that we think that has a tremendous amount of talent, but he's still working there, trying to find himself as we work into fall camp. Then you have Clay Ash, who's a steady hand, always worked hard that we're very happy to have.'
It might've been a rough second practice, but they are slowly improving each day, and are all fighting for a starting spot in Rodriguez's offense. Like the quarterbacks, Rodriguez will play as many running backs as there are players he 'can win with.' He's still trying to find who those players are.
'Get to that point where we got to play you because you're good enough to win with,' Rodriguez said. 'I'm hoping there's more than two at every position. I don't know if we'll be that. Right now, for the next couple of weeks everyone is getting reps, and it'll be quality reps, and they are going to get a really good chance to show if they've learned, and if they can help us win or not.'

'Looking at the schedule, I don't see a single surefire victory:' A sharp handicapper gives three CFB win totals to bet now

The calendar has flipped to August, which means college football season is fast approaching. While there is still plenty of time to get your futures wagers in, you're probably going to get a worse number on some season win totals than you would have a few weeks (or months) ago. Many respected bettors have bet their opinions already and moved the market. But fear not, we were able to talk to Paul Stone on the phone recently — a terrific college football handicapper who lives in Texas — to get his opinion on a few over/unders he likes. Here are three of his favorite college football season win-total wagers (as always, shop around for the best price as numbers vary at different books): West Virginia under 5.5 wins (-150 at BetMGM) Stone: "Rich Rodriguez returns to Morgantown and a lot of fanfare surrounding his hire. I would say the second time around in coaching is usually not as fruitful as the first. He loses two of his top players through the portal: RB C.J. Donaldson and LB Josiah Trotter, last year's Big 12 defensive freshman of the year. The Mountaineers will be favored in their opener vs. FCS Robert Morris, but they could be an underdog in their remaining 11 games. "West Virginia also doesn't draw Oklahoma State, Arizona or Houston in their Big 12 schedule, and they play some of that league's toughest teams there in Morgantown. It's typical in this age of NIL, the transfer portal and first-year head coach, but West Virginia has over 50 new players on its roster. The Mountaineers gave up 33.4 PPG last year and with Trotter exiting the program, I believe that number might be even higher in 2025. I see West Virginia winning five or fewer games this season." Oklahoma State under 5.5 (-175) Stone: "I heard Mike Gundy at Big 12 Media Days, and he indicated the Cowboys have 65 new players, 35 of whom he has never seen practice — they came in through the late portal. They don't have a single QB on the roster who has taken a snap before at OK State. All of this is just to point out that Gundy and OK State could be a case study in how quickly things can change in the age of NIL and the transfer portal. "Just two seasons ago, this program won 10 games in 2023 and played Texas for the Big 12 title. The Cowboys slipped to three wins last season and I'm not sure they'll be any better this year. In fact, I would contend the Cowboys are one of the five worst Power Four teams in all of college football. Only Purdue and Stanford clearly have lower power ratings than OK State entering the season. They've got relative gimmes in non-conference play vs. FCS Tennessee-Martin and Tulsa, but might not be favored in any other of their remaining 10 games. They don't draw West Virginia in conference, and play Arizona and UCF on the road. It's very difficult for me to see six wins for this team." Stanford under 3.5 (-175) Stone: "Stanford has gone 3-9 for four straight seasons and unless general manager Andrew Luck has some eligibility remaining, I believe the Cardinal will win three games or fewer again this season. Stanford was a big loser in the transfer portal this offseason. David Bailey, one of the nation's top defensive ends transferred to Texas Tech, while wide receiver Emmett Mosley V, who flourished late last season, moved on to Texas. They've also had some instability within the program as former head coach Troy Taylor was fired in March among allegations of mistreating female employees at the school. Frank Reich will serve as the school's interim coach. "Looking at the schedule, I don't see a single surefire victory. The Cardinal are currently 1- or 1.5-point favorites at most books in their opener at Hawaii, but that line is down to pick'em at Westgate, and I fully expect Hawaii to be a short favorite at kickoff. [Eds. note: Hawaii is currently a 1.5-point favorite at BetMGM.] The only other two games in which they could be favored this season are home games vs. San Jose State and Cal, but those are currently toss-ups, according to my power ratings. It's very difficult for me to see this team winning four or more games."

Aaron Judge set to return to Yankees lineup after battling elbow soreness

The struggling New York Yankees will get an important part of their team back today when slugger Aaron Judge returns from the injured list for their game against the Texas Rangers. The two-time American League MVP last played on July 25 before going on the IL with a flexor strain in his right elbow. Judge had been experiencing pain when he threw but not when he hit, so the Yankees decided to give him some time to rest. But since then, things have gone south for the Yanks. They've lost their last four games and have fallen behind the Boston Red Sox into third place in the AL East. Yankees manager Aaron Boone said simply, "Judge tomorrow" when he met with reporters after Monday night's 8-5 loss to the Rangers. Boone said before the game that Judge would serve as the designated hitter when he returned to the lineup. The seven-time All-Star leads the major leagues with a .342 batting average to go with 37 home runs and 85 RBIs. He'll certainly provide an offensive boost, but having him in the DH slot could displace one of the Yankees' hottest hitters. Giancarlo Stanton, who has yet to play in the field this season, has hit .270 with 10 homers in the 36 games he's played since making his season debut on June 16. Boone said Stanton would not be in the lineup with Judge serving as the DH when he returns. The Yankees will have an open roster spot to activate Judge as newly acquired outfielder Austin Slater will be put on the injured list after he experienced soreness in his right hamstring during Monday night's game. The Yankees began the month of July in first place in the division, but have fallen 5 1/2 games behind the Toronto Blue Jays and 2 1/2 behind the Boston Red Sox. "We've got to play better, and we've got to win," Boone said, "and we know that."

Carroll and Gurriel drive in 2 runs each, Diamondbacks beat Padres 6-2

PHOENIX -- Corbin Carroll and Lourdes Gurriel Jr. each drove in two runs, Brandon Pfaadt pitched into the sixth inning, and the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the San Diego Padres 6-2 on Monday night. Tyler Locklear and Alek Thomas each hit a solo homer for Arizona. Pfaadt (11-7) gave up two runs in 5 2/3 innings and was replaced in the sixth by Andrew Hoffmann with runners at first and third and two out. Hoffman got Ryan O'Hearn to fly out to end the threat and pitched a 1-2-3 seventh before Kyle Backhus got the final six outs for his first career save. Gurriel singled off Padres starter JP Sears (7-10) to drive in Ketel Marte and give Arizona a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Carroll hit a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded that drove in Blaze Alexander — who walked to lead off the inning — and made it 2-0. Arizona has won three in a row after it lost nine of 10. Manny Machado doubled with two out and scored when Jackson Merrill followed with another double in the third. Gavin Sheets drew a two-out walk, moved to second when Ramón Laureano singled and scored on a single by Jake Cronenworth to make it 5-2. Jorge Barrosa doubled to lead off the fourth inning, moved to third when Ketel Marte singled and scored on a double by Carroll. Gurriel singled to drive in Carroll and give the Diamonbacks a 5-1 lead. Thomas went 2 for 4 and is hitting .371 (13 for 35) with a double, three homers, five RBIs and two walks in 11 games since the All-Star break. Padres RHP Yu Darvish (1-3, 6.46 ERA) goes against Diamondbacks RHP Ryne Nelson (6-3, 3.20) on Tuesday.
