Nissan recalls 480,000 vehicles over fears their engines might fail
The car giant identified a defect with its VC-Turbo engines, one unique to Nissan and Infiniti cars.
The recalled models include: 2019-2020 Altima
2019-2022 Infiniti QX50
2021-2024 Rogue
2022 Infiniti QX55
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said in a recall notice that engine bearings may have manufacturing defects.
Failures typically happen over time, so owners of affected vehicles may spot warning signs like odd engine noises or dashboard indicator lights before any failure occurs.
In the US, about 443,899 vehicles are impacted, while 37,837 additional units are in Canada.
Dealers are asked to inspect the engine for 'metal debris' and fix or replace the engine.
The notice adds: 'For vehicles with the three-cylinder 1.5L VC-Turbo engine, if no debris is detected during the inspection, dealers will replace the oil pan gasket, engine oil, and reprogram the engine control module.
'For vehicles with the four-cylinder 2.0L VC-Turbo engine, if no debris is detected, dealers will replace the engine oil. Repairs will be performed free of charge.'
Nissan will notify vehicle owners by post in late August, advising them to bring their cars to dealerships for inspection.
Drivers are asked in the meantime to confirm if their vehicle is in the recall by using the NHTSA site or Nissan's recall lookup.
The NHTSA estimated that around 1.2% of the recalled vehicles have the defect.
Nissan has not yet released a dedicated phone number for this recall.
The car-maker said the recall is part of its 'ongoing commitment to customer safety'.
It comes after Nissan recalled various car models for possibly having faulty airbags.
A notice said: 'The airbags may inflate with such extreme force that parts of the airbag unit could shatter, firing metal fragments into the cabin.
'In such circumstance, these metal fragments could cause severe injury to you and/or your passengers.
'Act not. Don't delay.'
Customers are being contacted and vehicles will be repaired free of charge.

US and Japan agree trade deal to circumvent worst of tariffs
The US and Japan have agreed a trade deal days ahead of the latest tariff deadline set by Donald Trump. Under the terms of the agreement, rather than all Japanese goods being hit with a 24% tax on entry to the US, they will instead be subject to a 15% tariff. Significantly, and unlike the US-UK deal, there is no cap on the number of Japanese cars subject to the agreed lower tariff. The levy on cars and car parts has been brought down from 25% to 15%, making it the first country to secure a reduction in the blanket 25% rate on vehicles. Cars make up more than a quarter of all Japan's exports to the US. Japanese steel and aluminium are still subject to a 25% tariff. It's just over a week until the 1 August pause on tariffs is due to end, itself a six-week extension to the 9 July 90-day freeze US President Trump announced in April. It's seen a win for all parties as Japan is a major trading partner of the world's largest economy. 3:51 To make the deal happen, Japan agreed to a $550bn (£406bn) investment package of loans and guarantees from Japanese government-affiliated institutions in key sectors like pharmaceuticals and semiconductors. Japan will also increase purchases of US agricultural products such as rice. Market reaction Markets welcomed the news. In the US, the value of a dollar ticked up, and in Japan, the benchmark stock exchange, the Nikkei, gained sizably, and closed up more than 3.5%. The index is comprised of many major carmakers, including Nissan, Honda, Mazda, Toyota, and Mitsubishi, which all rallied following the news. While driving a prototype of the new Nissan Micra, we challenged the brand's European top-brass about whether a high performance Micra Nismo was on the cards, and they didn't say no. Speaking to Nissan's European head of product planning Christophe Amblard, he constructively replied to our enquiry about a potential Micra Nismo hot hatchback, by telling us that Nissan is 'actively looking at all sorts of possibilities with its future product range, including widening the Nismo range. But nothing can so far be confirmed'. Advertisement - Article continues below Such a car would help bolster the Nismo name, which the Japanese company is using as one of the 'core' brands alongside Patrol and Juke. But beyond just being a branding exercise, it would also make full use of the new Micra's platform, which we know is capable of handling more power. And while Nissan isn't flush with development cash right now, the Micra's close alignment to the Renault 5 means the work that sister company Alpine's done to its A290 hot hatchback could be an efficient way of giving the Micra more power and a more focused chassis. Of course, you can't buy a Nismo Micra yet, but you can search for deals on the Alpine A290 via Auto Express's ' Find a Car ' service… The core of the Alpine's changes relate largely to the new e-motor's power, which is rated at a much more serious 217bhp in its GTS form, 69bhp more than the existing Micra. But it's not just the more powerful engine that's been fiddled with, as the chassis has also been given a wider track, bigger wheels, larger brakes and uprated suspension. So while we'll need to wait a little longer for absolute confirmation that another high performance Nismo model is on the cards, if Nissan deems it a solid business case, something built in homage to the original Nissan Micra Super Turbo could be just around the corner.
