An ex-Memphis player allegedly leaked team's playbook. His new school, Purdue, says that's ‘mischaracterized.'

Chicago Tribune25-07-2025
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Purdue believes the alleged leaking of a playbook by former Memphis defensive back Tahj Ra-El to UTSA quarterback Owen McCown has been 'mischaracterized.'
Ra-El left Memphis in the middle of last season and has transferred to Purdue, where coach Barry Odom is in his first season. Ra-El began his college career at Old Dominion in 2021.
'Our coaching staff sees this scenario as being mischaracterized and does not have any concerns moving forward,' the Purdue athletic department said in a statement to The Associated Press on Friday.
The controversy erupted last week when On3 published screenshots of an alleged conversation between the former high school teammates from Charlotte, N.C.
'Far left is coverages. i'll send you better list showing you the call,' the screenshot showed Ra-El wrote. 'But they run qtrs none of they safeties can cover btw.'
Ra-El also reportedly told McCown that starting safety Kourtlan Marsh had an injured hamstring. Marsh didn't play in the game, which UTSA won 44-36 after scoring 30 consecutive points to erase a 24-14 halftime deficit.
During the American Conference media days, UTSA coach Jeff Traylor said the information had 'no bearing whatsoever' on the outcome of that game, even though he said he had not heard about the allegations until last week.
'The stuff he sent him didn't make any sense, so he didn't tell me,' Traylor said. 'He was just being nice to his buddy. It got blown out of context in my opinion.'
McCown threw for 3,424 yards and 25 touchdowns with 10 interceptions in 13 games last season, his first as the Roadrunners starter. They finished 7-6 and beat Coastal Carolina in the Myrtle Beach Bowl.
Memphis coach Ryan Silverfield reportedly said he and Traylor were seated across from each other during a media day event and they decided it was best to move on from the controversy.

Tiger Woods' son Charlie finishes top 10 at Junior PGA Championship in West Lafayette

WEST LAFAYETTE — Charlie Woods entered the Junior PGA Championship and started slow, just cracking the top 50 on Tuesday at Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex in West Lafayette. Woods would prove to doubters, if there were any, that he could hold his own on the big stage just over a week after being cut in the U.S. Amateur Championship in Dallas. While the final result wasn't what Woods had desired on Friday, it still sends a message that golf's famous teenager could play the sport at an elite level. Woods finished the Junior PGA Championship 9-under-par and tied for ninth after shooting a 74 on Friday afternoon. More coverage: Purdue commit Sam Carraher embraces attention with Charlie Woods, son of Tiger Woods His top nine finish gives him an automatic invite to next year's Junior PGA Tournament at Fields Range in Frisco, Texas. Woods also has a chance to be a captain's pick for the U.S. Junior Ryder Cup team which will be announced Tuesday. While Woods wasn't made available for media post match on Friday, there were plenty of compliments shared in his direction about his game by 2025 Junior PGA Championship winner Lunden Esterline. 'Putter finally woke up': Charlie Woods gets hot in Round 2 of Junior PGA Championships "I had fun playing with him and Pennson (Badgett)," Esterline said. "They were both good guys." Three bogies and a double bogey on 15 ultimately hampered the 16-year-old from Jupiter, Florida. His putting didn't carry the same sharpness on the greens at Ackerman-Allen Course where he'd birdied nine times the day before. Woods faced an uphill battle entering Friday tied at -12 against Esterline who was -19. Winning the Junior PGA Championship was feasible for Woods but he needed to replicate his performance from Thursday to catch Esterline. More news: Purdue commit Sam Carraher embraces attention with Charlie Woods, son of Tiger Woods Woods went bogey free his first eight holes but managed just one birdie before his struggles on 14 and 15. Even with his late round troubles, Woods proved he is a top tier amateur golfer.

Erik van Rooyen withdraws from Wyndham Championship late Friday afternoon

There was another withdrawal at the 2025 Wyndham Championship, as Erik van Rooyen tapped out with a back injury Friday afternoon, according to the PGA Tour. The South African was 1 over through 14 holes (he started on No. 10) in his second round. He was 4 over overall, well off the projected cut line of 4 under. There were four previous withdrawals since Sunday from this event, the final one of the 2025 regular season for the PGA Tour and van Rooyen's departure was announced 10 minutes after the tournament officials suspended play for "dangerous weather." In the projected FedEx Cup Playoffs standings at the time of his WD, van Rooyen was 68th, down four spots from where he was when the tournament started. Only the top 70 in the points on Sunday night advance to the first event in the postseason, next week's FedEx St. Jude Championship in Memphis. Warriors' Stephen Curry Praises Grizzlies' Ja Morant During NBA Offseason for Key Reason

Warriors' Stephen Curry Praises Grizzlies' Ja Morant During NBA Offseason for Key Reason originally appeared on Athlon Sports. It has been an extremely quiet offseason thus far for the Golden State Warriors as they have failed to make any additions to their roster outside of the 2025 draft. Golden State was expected to be very active this summer to upgrade their roster around their star trio of Stephen Curry, Jimmy Butler and Draymond Green to chase a championship next season. Instead, the Warriors have not made any additions to their roster outside of the draft and the main reason why is the ongoing saga between them and restricted free agent Jonathan Kuminga as Golden State continues to await his decision on what is next for his career. Because of this, the Warriors have missed out on a ton of free agent targets which is a massive blow to their title hopes next season. Despite this, they are still expected to make moves this offseason and with Curry leading the way, they will likely be a contender once again next season. Curry was in the news earlier this week as he was on a video posted by the Good Dude YouTube channel where he had high praise for Memphis Grizzlies star Ja Morant for one key reason. 'Ja Morant. I think, pound-for-pound, he is the most athletic dude in the league,' Curry said. In the video, Curry also compared Morant's athleticism to both Rusell Westbrook and John Wall's in their prime but said Morant's ability has more finesse. This is high praise coming from Curry but it does make a ton of sense as Morant is one of the most athletic players the NBA has seen in quite some time. From throwing down vicious dunks due to his extreme bounce to blocking shots on the other end, Morant is one of the most fun young players to watch in the NBA currently and there is no doubt that the Grizzlies star has earned praise from Curry due to his skills.
