Strictly's Amy Dowden put 'so much pressure on herself' to return post-treatment
Strictly Come Dancing star Amy Dowden said she hit an "all time low" after finishing cancer treatment – but is now a "newer, stronger" version of herself and is ready to return to the show. The 34 year old professional dancer made her comeback to the BBC programme last year following her breast cancer diagnosis in 2023.
However, halfway through the series, Amy, who was paired with JLS singer JB Gill, was forced to pull out after sustaining a foot injury. This prompted the Welsh performer to reflect on her progress, and how she should have been kinder to herself in her recovery.
"I feel like Amy's back, but actually a newer, stronger version of me," she said. "I'm really grateful to be in this position. It's been a long road of recovery."
Amy, who endured a mastectomy, chemotherapy, and was placed into a treatment-induced menopause by medics as part of her care said she was 'a bit naïve' after ringing the bell - a tradition amongst cancer patients once they complete treatment. "I honestly thought that that's it, I had my life back."
What she didn't anticipate was the long road to recovery which would follow, to get back to where she was before, both physically and mentally.
Speaking at the launch of the Keep Ahead awareness campaign, she opened up about how it took a toll emotionally. The campaign, spearheaded and funded by Novartis Pharmaceuticals UK, is designed to shed light on life after breast cancer.
For many who haven't been through it, ringing the bell might seem like a moment of pure joy, but Amy reveals that this isn't always the case.
In the weeks following her bell-ringing, Amy confessed she hit an "all time low". "I was very emotional; I was scared, petrified and thought 'what if I haven't done enough."
She admitted she experienced feelings of 'guilt' over these emotions: "I felt why am I feeling like this when I should be happy and celebrating when deep inside I felt angry and bitter."
She highlighted the extensive road to recovery; regaining stamina, rebuilding confidence – particularly in her line of work. Moreover, she had to come to terms with what she had been through.
"After I rang the bell, I thought I was done, but I was deluded... The road to recovery was pretty grim to be honest with you and my stamina levels were the lowest they've ever been in my life. Having to start that journey to the dance floor felt like a million miles away."
She continued: "After the last chemo, I don't want to say I felt worse, but you know, yeah it did, because you feel like you're doing something during it [cancer treatment]. Then all of a sudden, you face the reality of trying to rebuild a new version of you."
However, the dancer has since battled her way back to health and is now determined to live life to the fullest. She has just wrapped up filming for the new series of Celebrity Hunted, and completed her UK dance tour earlier this year with fellow Strictly star Carlos Gu.
She's also been making sure to spend quality time with loved ones and prioritise rest. "I've learned to take time to rest, recover and spend time with my loved ones."
On Celebrity Hunted, Amy had to go "off-grid" and refrain from using electronic devices including her phone – a digital detox she plans to incorporate more into her life to be more present with her husband Ben.
Amy said: "I was always on my phone and I've learned that you don't need to be contactable 24/7, and to put the phone away and appreciate what's in front of you. I'm not going to just scroll through social media and watch what everyone else is doing."
This relaxation and recovery has led to a happier Amy and now she believes she can return to Strictly even stronger.
She said: "Last year, I put so much pressure on myself. I've taken that pressure away from me now and I can't wait to just enjoy it."

John Torode's wife Lisa Faulkner breaks silence on MasterChef axe
Lisa Faulkner has broken her silence after her husband John Torode was sacked as judge on MasterChef following an allegation of racism. John Torode's wife Lisa Faulkner has broken her online silence following her husband's sacking from MasterChef. She's spoken after it was confirmed Torode's contract with the BBC series would not be renewed due to a historic allegation of racism. In a video posted on her Instagram on Monday night, July 28, the actress told fans: "Hi there, I just wanted to check in and say hello. I'm here and just thank you for all your lovely comments because they really, really mean a lot. So thank you." Lisa, 53, married Torode in 2019. This is the second marriage for the pair, with the former Holby City actress previously being with Chris Coghill, known for his role as Tony King in EastEnders. They share an adopted daughter named Billie. Torode's ex-wife is Jessica, and they have two children together. The former MasterChef star, 59, also has two older children from a previous relationship, reports the Mirror. Lisa and Torode first met when Lisa competed on Celebrity MasterChef back in 2010, forming a strong friendship that eventually blossomed. The pair hit it off immediately, maintaining their friendship after filming, but Lisa insists there was no initial romantic spark. "He was a judge on a show I loved and I was petrified of him. He was brilliant and gave us all tips so you didn't want to let him down," she recalled. "All I could think was, 'That sauce hasn't worked'. I didn't see anything but food for three months. After I won, we did The Good Food Show and stuff. John and I always got on, but I never thought about me and him." John Torode's contract with MasterChef will not be renewed, as confirmed by the BBC and production company Banijay UK. The Australian-born presenter, 59, began co-hosting MasterChef with Gregg Wallace in 2005. Torode acknowledged that he was the subject of a complaint regarding the use of racist language, which was upheld during a review conducted by law firm Lewis Silkin into the alleged behaviour of his co-presenter Gregg Wallace. Banijay UK issued a statement saying: "In response to John Torode's statement, it is important to stress that Banijay UK takes this matter incredibly seriously. The legal team at Lewis Silkin that investigated the allegations relating to Gregg Wallace also substantiated an accusation of highly offensive racist language against John Torode which occurred in 2018. "This matter has been formally discussed with John Torode by Banijay UK, and whilst we note that John says he does not recall the incident, Lewis Silkin have upheld the very serious complaint. Banijay UK and the BBC are agreed that we will not renew his contract on MasterChef." The report from Lewis Silkin, commissioned by Banijay UK, found that 45 out of 83 allegations against Wallace were substantiated, along with two standalone allegations made against other individuals, including one for using racist language. Torode acknowledged he was the individual accused of racist language but stated he had "no recollection of the incident" and was "shocked and saddened" by the allegation. A BBC spokesperson commented: "John Torode has identified himself as having an upheld allegation of using racist language against him. This allegation – which involves an extremely offensive racist term being used in the workplace- was investigated and substantiated by the independent investigation led by the law firm, Lewis Silkin. John Torode denies the allegation. "He has stated he has no recollection of the alleged incident and does not believe that it happened. He also says that any racial language is wholly unacceptable in any environment. "The BBC takes this upheld finding extremely seriously. We will not tolerate racist language of any kind and, as we have already said, we told Banijay UK, the makers of MasterChef, that action must be taken. John Torode's contract on MasterChef will not be renewed." Despite Torode's MasterChef dismissal, he has continued to grace television screens alongside Lisa for their own programme. An insider close to ITV confirmed to the Mirror that their scheduling for John and Lisa's Weekend Kitchen 'remains unchanged' despite John's dismissal from MasterChef.

The One Show host Alex Jones returns after 'heartbreaking' end to summer break
The One Show host Alex Jones has made a return to the BBC One show alongside her co-host JB Gill after a 'traumatic' reason forced the pair to delay their comeback Alex Jones has made her comeback to The One Show following a "heartbreaking" conclusion to her holiday. The BBC show returned to telly screens on Monday (July 28) after its summer break. Presenters Alex and JB Gill were joined on the iconic green sofa by guests Freddie Highmore from The Good Doctor and Anna Friel from Unforgivable, both of whom discussed their latest projects. Starting off the live broadcast, Alex greeted viewers with: "Hello there and welcome to your Monday One Show live on BBC One and iPlayer with JB Gill.." JLS star JB chimed in: "and Alex Jones. Now we're back to share our evenings with you after an amazing few weeks of sport here on the BBC.", reports Wales Online. The pair then went on to discuss England's Euros victory over Spain on Sunday (July 27) before engaging in conversation with guests Freddie and Anna. This comes after Alex disclosed that her family's kitten Sabrina was severely injured after being hit by a car. The distraught presenter shared the emotional news from the Lake District, where she and her family had taken a delayed holiday on the recommendation of celebrity vet Noel Fitzpatrick, who intervened to treat Sabrina's fractured pelvis. Despite the ordeal, Alex confirmed that her kitten had undergone surgery and was now on the mend. Detailing what had transpired earlier in the week, Alex also informed her followers: "We think our gorgeous little kitten, Sabrina, was hit by a car yesterday evening but despite breaking her pelvis, she managed to crawl back to the house to tell us that she was hurt." After receiving emergency care, Sabrina was moved to Professor Noel Fitzpatrick's specialist veterinary clinic for further treatment. Alex referred to the Supervet star as "the light at the end of a pretty scary 24 hours", expressing her gratitude for his quick action and support during what she called a distressing time for her young family. She shared that Noel had suggested they continue with their planned trip, saying: "We were due to come to the Lake District the middle of last week and obviously all of this happened, but we did eventually make it." Noel said, you know, she needs to stay with me anyway so you might as well go, because the kids were traumatised by the whole thing and disappointed - so we did come, and I'm so glad." Since 2010, Alex has been a co-presenter on The One Show, initially teaming up with Matt Baker and later working with various co-hosts including JB, Roman Kemp and Ronan Keating.

Here's what we drank at the Spirit of Wales distillery in Newport
The Spirit of Wales distillery located on the Maesglas Industrial Estate prides itself on being 'uniquely Newport.' Trays of drinks at the Spirit of Wales distillery (Image: NQ) Run by a small team of six the distillery's spirit tasting nights offers visitors a chance to sample some of their award winning locally produced drinks. Their website reads: 'Inspired by the landscapes, people, and the industry surrounding us, we invite you on a flavour journey that pays tribute to the Welsh passion.' Here's what was up for grabs when we went to one of their tasting sessions on a Friday night. We arrived at the distillery bang on 7pm and soon enough the vodka was cracked open. However, this wasn't just any vodka this was their special 'Steeltown' vodka. A Steeltown Vodka shot at the Spirit of Wales distillery (Image: NQ) The 40% proof vodka was served chilled straight in a shot glass so consumers could see if it agreed with their palette. According to our host the vodka's taste differs based on the temperature it's served at. Our shot was paired with a mixer of choice lemonade or coke. The majority of the tasters selected coke. This, in my opinion, went down much smoother for my palette. Dragons' Breath rum at the Spirit of Wales distillery (Image: NQ) Another memorable drink that was served was the distillery's famed 'Dragons Breath' rum. Weighing in at a whopping 49% proof, the rum contained at least 40 botanicals. Ingredients like black pepper, honey, lime coconut and paprika gave the drink a fiery taste. Tasters enjoyed the rum with ginger beer to enhance its naturally warm flavours which was well received. Another crowd pleaser was the distillery's Steeltown Welsh Dry Gin. At 43% proof tasters enjoyed the combination of sparky fresh lemon peel aromas mixed with orris root and rosemary. Alongside this many refillable shots were up for grabs. Strawberry whiskey, coffee liqueur and raspberry and passionfruit shots The tasting session officially came to a close at 9pm. At £20 per person for a night of bubbly entertainment and merry drinking what's not the love?
