Breakthrough In Pahalgam Terror Attack Case? Shopian And Tral Encounters May Offer Clues
Amid speculation about possible involvement of the killed terrorists with the Pahalgam module, officials told News18 that a technical investigation is being mounted
Back-to-back encounters in Shopian and Tral in south Kashmir have raised hopes of a breakthrough in the Pahalgam terror attack case. Preliminary investigation suggests that the three people killed in Tral on Thursday are: Asif Ahmad Sheikh S/o Ghulam Mohd R/o Munghama Tral; Amir Nazir wani S/o Nazir R/o Khasipora Tral; and, Yawar Ahmad Bhat S/o Nazir Ahmad R/o Larrow Jagir, Tral. All three are suspected to be part of the Jaish-e-Mohammad terror group.
Security forces on Thursday launched a cordon and search operation in the Nader Tral area of Awantipora in the south Kashmir district after receiving specific inputs about the presence of terrorists.
The search operation turned into an encounter after the terrorists opened fire at the forces, who retaliated, officials said. The three terrorists were killed in the exchange of fire, they added.
A day earlier, three other terrorists, including Shahid Kuttay and Adnan Shafi Dar, were gunned down in Shopian.
The Indian Army said the Shopian operation was launched on Tuesday on the basis of intelligence about terrorists' presence in the area. 'The operation resulted in the neutralisation of three hardcore terrorists including the local commander of LeT/TRF after an intense encounter," the ADGPI said in a post on X.
Two AK series rifles, a large quantity of ammunition, grenades, and other war-like stores were found in their possession, he said.
Kuttay, an alleged active terrorist since March 2023, was suspected to be involved in multiple attacks, including the April 8 shooting at Danish Resort in Shopian, which left two German tourists and their driver injured.
The family homes of Kuttay and Shafi Dar were demolished after the April 22 Pahalgam attack, in which Pakistan-backed terrorists killed 26 Indian tourists, including a naval officer, in J&K's Pahalgam.
Amid speculation about possible involvement of the killed terrorists with the Pahalgam module, officials told News18 that a technical investigation is being mounted.
'The mobile phones found on the slain terrorists might hold some clue. It is being put through forensic test to ascertain if the slain terrorists had any role to play in Pahalgam," a top officer of the security grid told News18.
It was slain terrorist Junaid Bhatt's phone that had given the local police and security grid details about Pakistani terrorists Hashim Musa, Ali Bhai and Anantnag resident Adil Hussain Thoker. The trio is suspected of killing the 26 tourists in Pahalgam. J&K Police have announced a Rs 20 lakh reward for any information on the trio.
Junaid had allegedly conspired with Musa and others to carry out the terror attack at Sonmarg tunnel. He was subsequently killed in Dachigam and his phone provided viral clues.
The National Investigation Agency (NIA), sources said, is likely to work with the Jammu and Kashmir Police on the Tral and Shopian encounter to look for possible evidence in the Pahalgam case which the federal agency is probing.

The government issued nine show-cause notices to Air India for safety violations in the last six months, with enforcement action taken in one case, the civil aviation minister informed Rajya Sabha Deepak Patel New Delhi The central government has issued nine show-cause notices to Air India in the past six months for five safety violations, with enforcement action completed in one case, Minister of State for Civil Aviation Muralidhar Mohol told Rajya Sabha on Monday. In a written reply, Mohol also said that 71 aircraft belonging to various carriers were damaged at Indian airports in the first six months of 2025 due to 511 bird strikes and 16 animal strikes. No injuries or fatalities were reported from such incidents in the past five years. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has conducted three safety audits of Air India— in September 2020, March 2023, and March 2025—and found no major lapses. However, the regulator did follow up with the airline to ensure corrective actions were taken, he added. Between 2020 and 2025, DGCA took enforcement action in three complaints against Air India. These included a ₹30 lakh penalty, suspension of three licences, withdrawal of one post holder's approval, and five warnings. Mohol also said Air India was fully compliant with DGCA regulations at the time of its disinvestment. "During the last six months, a total of nine show-cause notices have been issued to Air India in connection with five identified safety violations. Enforcement action has been completed in respect of one violation," he stated.

Two women caught in Bengaluru with cocaine worth Rs 14.69 crore in soap boxes

Rebels in Colombia attack military patrol with drone, killing 3 soldiers
Bogota, Jul 21 (AP) Rebels in northeastern Colombia used a drone to attack a military patrol in a rural area, killing three soldiers and injuring eight, the military said. The army blamed the attack on the National Liberation Army, or ELN, a group of approximately six thousand fighters that has been fighting the Colombian government since the 1960s. The attack took place Sunday outside the town of El Carmen in the Catatumbo region, the military said in a statement. Rebel groups in Colombia are increasingly using drones to attack the military and to attack each other as they fight for control of rural areas. They mostly use commercial photography drones with explosives strapped to them, flying them straight into their targets. Colombia's Defense Ministry says that rebel groups launched 115 drone attacks last year. Sunday's drone attack is the one of the deadliest on record. Colombia's government has struggled to contain violence in rural areas that were formerly under the control of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC, the guerrilla group that made peace with the government in 2016. Several smaller rebel groups and drug gangs are now fighting over the control of areas abandoned by the FARC, where illicit activities like drug trafficking and illegal mining are common.
