Stay away from 'Turun Anwar' rally, chief secretary tells civil servants

Malaysiakini4 days ago
Chief Secretary to the Government Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar has reminded civil servants not to participate in a rally scheduled to be held in Kuala Lumpur on Saturday (July 26).
He said it is inappropriate for civil servants to join such a gathering, as doing so would be inconsistent with the principle of 'Loyalty to King and Country', as enshrined in the Rukun Negara.

Poverty eradication drive pushes stronger actions

Mega initiative: Ahmad Zahid speaking at the Karnival Mega 3 Dimensi (MK3D) press conference at the Parliament Building, Kuala Lumpur. MK3D is an initiative to unite entrepreneurship programmes under one holistic platform. — Bernama PUTRAJAYA: The People's Well-being Initiative (Sejahtera Madani) needs strong follow-through to ensure its success in eradicating urban poverty, says Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. While the initiative is a positive development, he said it must be followed through with comprehensive actions to ensure lasting impact for those in need. 'As often said, we cannot just give a man a fish – we must give him a fishing rod so that he can catch fish on his own. 'In other words, the programme must be long-term and include joint monitoring by the private sector, government-linked companies, government-linked investment companies and other bodies. This is a good approach,' he told the media after the launch of the initiative by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim here yesterday as reported by Bernama. Ahmad Zahid said the Sejahtera Madani Fund, which has raised nearly RM120mil, covers not only financial aid but also goods, services and training. He said the initiative is a commendable effort coordinated by the Implementation Coordination Unit of the Prime Minister's Department. Sejahtera Madani is a national initiative aimed at assisting poor and hardcore poor households registered under the National Poverty Database (eKasih system). The initiative brings together various forms of aid interventions across ministries, agencies and the private sector to eradicate poverty in a focused and integrated manner. Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar said Sejahtera Madani is a national initiative specifically designed to assist poor and hardcore poor households. He said such programmes are in line with the Fifth Core of the Public Service Reform Agenda, which is to strengthen synergy between the public and private sectors, particularly involving corporate bodies such as government-linked companies, government-linked investment companies, companies limited by guarantee and statutory bodies. 'The implementation chain of such programmes must continue to be strengthened, in line with the whole-of-nation approach that emphasises the spirit of unity and consensus, in accordance with the principle of ihsan, which underpins the Madani values,' he said.

Modi and Starmer sign landmark UK-India trade deal to boost £25.5b commerce

LONDON, July 24 — Prime Minister Keir Starmer praised Britain's 'unique bonds' with India as he and his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi formally signed a recently announced UK-India trade deal during talks today. Starmer hailed the agreement as a 'landmark moment' for both countries as he hosted India's leader at his Chequers country estate, northwest of London. 'This is not the extent or the limit of our collaboration with India,' added the British premier, whose year-old government is struggling to fire up an economy weakened by years of stagnant growth and high inflation. 'We have unique bonds of history, of family and of culture and we want to strengthen our relationship further, so that it is even more ambitious, modern and focused on the long term,' he said. Starmer and Modi announced in May they had struck a free trade agreement that the British government says will eventually add £4.8 billion (RM27.4 billion) a year to the UK economy. The UK and India hope the accord will boost trade between the two countries by £25.5 billion, as well as bolstering the British economy and wages. Modi, standing alongside Starmer during a media appearance, described the deal as a 'blueprint for our shared prosperity'. Britain and India are the sixth and fifth largest global economies respectively, with a trade relationship worth around £41 billion and investment supporting more than 600,000 jobs across both countries. The accord slashes tariffs on imports of UK goods into India, including whisky, cosmetics and medical devices. In return, the United Kingdom will cut tariffs on clothes, footwear and food products including frozen prawns from India. Starmer and Modi were also likely to discuss last month's Air India disaster in which 241 people died when a London-bound flight crashed after taking off from Ahmedabad in western India. Some 169 Indian passengers and 52 British nationals were killed in the June 12 crash, one of the deadliest plane disasters in terms of the number of British fatalities. Sikh blogger A lawyer for 20 British families said this week the repatriation of victims had been marred by errors with one relative finding that a returned coffin contained 'co-mingled' remains. A different family was told a coffin contained the body of someone else entirely, not their loved one, he said, according to UK media. India's foreign ministry has said all remains 'were handled with utmost professionalism' and that it is 'continuing to work with the UK authorities on addressing any concerns related to this issue'. Another tricky topic of discussion could be that of Scottish sikh blogger Jagtar Singh Johal, imprisoned in India since 2017 on accusations of being part of a terror plot against right-wing Hindu leaders. He has not been convicted of a crime and in March was cleared of one of the nine charges against him. His brother Gurpreet Singh Johal said in a statement the case 'should be high on the agenda' during the two leaders' meeting. Starmer and Modi have met twice recently, at the G7 summit in Canada last month and at the G20 meeting in Brazil last year. Modi was also due to see King Charles III during his brief stay in Britain, his fourth visit since becoming India's leader in 2014. — AFP

Opposition to provide legal support for anti-Anwar demonstrators

KUALA LUMPUR: The Opposition said it would provide legal assistance to any civil servants facing action for participating in the upcoming "Turun Anwar" rally, scheduled for Saturday. Pendang member of parliament Datuk Awang Solahuddin Hashim said legal support would be extended to those who face action for taking part in the rally. "I want to emphasise that if any civil servant faces action (for joining the rally), we will provide them with lawyers," he said when debating the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam) 2023 Annual Report and Financial Statements in the Dewan Rakyat today. Awang said this after Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar and the Attorney-General's Chambers (AGC) reminded civil servants not to participate in the opposition-organised rally. Awang said Article 10 of the Federal Constitution guarantees citizens the right to free speech and peaceful assembly. On Sunday (July 20), Shamsul Azri said civil servants must adhere to the pledge enshrined in the Rukun Negara. "They cannot attend. Civil servants recite the pledge every day, every week. The Rukun Negara includes the principle of loyalty to the king and country... Have they forgotten? Be loyal to the king and country," he said. Yesterday, the AGC in a statement said civil servants who participate in the rally may face disciplinary action for breaching civil service regulations. The AGC stressed that civil servants are bound by the pledge outlined in the Public Officers (Appointment, Promotion and Termination of Service) Regulations 2012, as well as the Public Officers (Conduct and Discipline) Regulations 1993.
