Sachin Tendulkar missing from Hashim Amla's list of top 3 greatest batters

India Today4 days ago
Former South African cricketer Hashim Amla recently made headlines with a surprising omission in his list of the three greatest batters of all time. In an interview with Star Sports, Amla named his top three, and many fans were stunned to see Indian legend Sachin Tendulkar missing from the list.Tendulkar, often referred to as the "God of Cricket," is widely regarded as the greatest batter in the game's history. He holds the record for the most runs in both Test matches and One Day Internationals. Naturally, Amla's decision to leave him out raised eyebrows across the cricketing world.advertisementSpeaking about his all-time favourite batters, Amla said: "There are so many great players over the years. Growing up, my three favourite players were Brian Lara, Steve Waugh, and Jacques Kallis, being from South Africa. But now, I'd pick three other names-Virat Kohli in recent times, AB de Villiers, and one more from the old days, Sir Vivian Richards."
Instead of Tendulkar, Amla's selections reflect a mix of modern brilliance and old-school dominance. Kohli and de Villiers symbolise contemporary excellence and innovation, while Richards epitomised fearless, explosive batting that could dismantle any bowling attack.Amla, 42, is currently playing in England for the South Africa Champions team in the World Championship of Legends. Under the captaincy of AB de Villiers, he recently scored 15 off 18 balls against the West Indies Legends in a tied match at Edgbaston, which South Africa went on to win 2-0 in a bowl-out.Amla himself is no stranger to greatness. The elegant right-hander retired with 18,672 runs in 349 international matches, admired for his calm demeanour and fluent stroke play. Given his stature in world cricket, his exclusion of Tendulkar carries significant weight-and has certainly sparked conversation.Amla, who captained South Africa in 14 Tests and nine ODIs during his playing career, is currently facing off against several of his former rivals in the ongoing World Championship of Legends. When asked which player he is most excited to play against in the coming days, Amla named none other than Chris Gayle. The self-styled "Universe Boss" is leading the West Indies Legends in WCL 2025.'Universe Boss. He's definitely the one I always look forward to watching and playing against,' Amla said.- Ends

Star India cricketer reveals who asked Rishabh Pant to bat with injury, says ‘was having a discussion…

Star India cricketer reveals who asked Rishabh Pant to bat with injury, says 'was having a discussion… New Delhi: Former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar praised vice-captain Rishabh Pant's decision to come out to bat despite a broken right leg on the second day of the fourth Test. Manjrekar called it a moment that the cricket world will remember for the next 50 years. How did Pant return to the field? On Thursday, Pant, who retired hurt due to injury on the first day, was greeted with a standing ovation by the spectators when he came out to bat limping on the second day. He played a courageous innings of 54 runs off 75 balls, which was his 18th half-century in Test cricket. Why was this decision taken? Manjrekar said, 'When we saw him talking to Gautam Gambhir and he was in his white dress, we thought he might come at the end of the innings. But he came on the field after the next wicket. He is injured, but never underestimate this player.' He further said, 'Even if he is told that he cannot move his feet, he can still control the game with his excellent eye and hand coordination. England should be worried that Rishabh Pant is back, even if he is clearly in pain.' What is the significance of this moment? Manjrekar compared this incident to Anil Kumble bowling with a bandage on his jaw. He said, 'Such moments are recorded in history, which are remembered for decades. This shows how eager he is to play for India.' He further said, 'Test cricket has a different charm in England. The amount of attention a cricketer gets here is not found anywhere else. Perhaps this is the reason why Pant has made up his mind to leave his mark in Test cricket as compared to white-ball cricket.' Who else contributed? Apart from Pant, Sai Sudarshan scored 61 and Yashasvi Jaiswal scored 58 runs to help India post 358 in the first innings. Manjrekar said, 'This is a story that I will always carry with me. This Indian team is playing without two senior batsmen – experienced players like Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane are not in the team, yet they have batted almost 750 overs in this series.' He concluded, 'With almost no experience, this team has shown tremendous composure and discipline. It shows the hunger and maturity of this group.'

India And Pakistan In Same Group For Asia Cup 2025: Report

Last Updated: The clouds of uncertainty over this year's Asia Cup have been lifted with the continental tournament expected to start in the first week of September. The biennial Asia Cup tournament is expected to be played at the neutral venue due to the geopolitical tensions between India and Pakistan with UAE the likely destination. The tournament was originally scheduled to be held in India but now will reportedly be played across two venues in the UAE with BCCI keeping the hosting rights. Following the dastardly terrorist attack in Pahalgam and the resulting India-Pakistan skirmishes at the border, various media reports claimed that Indian cricket team may withdraw from the Asia Cup. However, BCCI refuted any such development. Now, according to news agency PTI, during a meeting of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) in Dhaka which the BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla attended virtually, the decision to play the competition in UAE was taken. However, a final decision over the scheduling is still pending. 'The BCCI will host the Asia Cup in the UAE. India is likely to play all its matches in Dubai. There are still deliberations on scheduling," an ACC source told PTI. India And Pakistan In Same Group? The tournament will be held in T20I format this time around and as per reports, India and Pakistan will be kept in the same group meaning they could clash at least twice – once in the group stage and then Super Six with a possibility of a third match should both qualify for the final. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia says an official announcement regarding Asia Cup will be made in the coming days. 'Our vice-president Rajeev Shukla attended the ACC meeting. He will brief the members. I don't believe in speculations so you will get to know officially in a few days time," BCCI secretary Saikia said. When Was The Last Time India-Pakistan Clashed? India and Pakistan recently played against each other at the Champions Trophy in Dubai during a group stage match. The tournament was originally toz be hosted in Pakistan but BCCI's refusal to send its team resulted in it being held in Hybrid Model with India playing all their matches in Dubai including the semifinal and the final. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
