Where LSU football's 2026 recruiting class ranks nationally after busy Fourth of July

USA Today19 hours ago
The Fourth of July, as it is every year, was jam-packed with college football recruiting news. A handful of blue-chip prospects around the country revealed their commitments and LSU football was at the center of the action. The Tigers missed some big names, but LSU added two priority recruits to its 2026 class.
LSU earned a commitment from four-star tackle Bryson Cooley out of Mississippi. Cooley's commitment continued LSU's run of success recruiting the state of Mississippi. Cooley joins five-star wide receiver Tristen Keys and four-star offensive tackle Emmanuel Tucker as 2026 LSU commits from the state.
LSU is now up to 14 commits. The headliners of the group are Keys and five-star defensive tackle Richard Anderson. Fifty-seven percent of the class hails from Louisiana.
After a busy week, the recruiting rankings look a little different. Here's a look at where Brian Kelly and the LSU Tigers sit in the latest recruiting rankings.
LSU football 2026 recruiting class rankings
LSU ranks outside of the top five, but the Tigers are contending for the No. 1 recruiting class in college football. LSU doesn't have the same quantity as other programs, but that will come in due time. LSU does hold the title when it comes to quality, though. LSU's 2026 class ranks No. 1 in average recruit rating in both Rivals and 247Sports' rankings.

Where Clemson landed in ESPN's updated College Football Future Power Rankings through 2026

Clemson football is firmly back among college football's top contenders, climbing to No. 7 in ESPN's College Football Future Power Rankings through 2026 — up from No. 12 last year. Much of that optimism centers on quarterback Cade Klubnik, who's set for his third and final season as the Tigers' starter. After accounting for 43 touchdowns and more than 4,000 total yards in 2024, he's expected to finish as one of the program's most productive quarterbacks before heading to the NFL. A dominant defensive line is another reason for Clemson's rise. The Tigers return All-America candidates T.J. Parker and Peter Woods, both projected as early picks for the 2026 NFL Draft. They also added Purdue transfer Will Heldt, who produced five sacks and 10 tackles for loss last fall, and veteran tackle DeMonte Capehart is back to strengthen the interior. Up front on offense, Clemson brings back four starters on the line, including Ryan Linthicum, Tristan Leigh and Walker Parks — all honorable mention All-ACC selections. The Tigers also made subtle but important moves in the transfer portal, landing Heldt and wide receiver Tristan Smith from Missouri State, adding depth to a unit that already features standout Antonio Williams, a first-team All-ACC pick last season. A new defensive coordinator, Tom Allen — fresh off helping Penn State reach the CFP semifinal — steps in to boost a unit that needed a spark. With key stars returning and Swinney's willingness to adapt, Clemson appears ready to make a serious national title push in the next two years. Former LSU baseball ace making waves in the Athletics' minor leagues

A former LSU baseball star is putting on a show in the minor leagues. The Athletics selected LSU pitcher Gage Jump in the fourth round of the 2024 draft, and after a stellar start to 2025, Jump is the A's No. 1-ranked prospect. Jump began his collegiate career at UCLA in 2022, but an injury forced the lefty to miss the entire 2023 season. Jump transferred to LSU and spent one year in Baton Rouge, serving as the Tigers' ace. In his lone year with LSU, Jump tossed 83 innings with a 3.47 ERA. He struck out 101 and walked 22. LSU was sent home in the regional round in 2024 as LSU's lineup struggled to replace the lost production from 2023, but with Jump on the mound, the pitching wasn't an issue. Jump didn't pitch in the minors at all in 2024, but through 78.1 innings in 2025, Jump owns a 2.07 ERA with 94 strikeouts. Opposing batters are hitting just .186 vs Jump. Here's what says in its latest scouting report of Jump: "Jump's fastball is difficult for opposing hitters to pick up with an arm angle that creates some deception. The heater sits about 92-94 mph and can reach up to 97 with good carry up in the zone. His upper-70s curveball has significant downer break, and his low-80s slider has cutting ceiling of a mid-rotation starter is there, though some scouts believe he might be better suited in a bullpen role. To start out, the A's will develop him as a starter and look to see him maintain good health and strike-throwing ability." If Jump keeps pitching like this, he will remain in a starting role and be at the MLB level sooner rather than later. Jump isn't the only former Tiger in the A's organization. He's joined by Tommy White, who remains with the A's High-A team.
