Telugu states top South India in court case backlog

Time of India8 hours ago
Hyderabad: The Telugu states have recorded the highest rise in pending cases among South Indian states in district and subordinate courts, with a worrying 38% spike in pendency between 2020 and 2025.
In Telangana, the number of pending cases grew from 6.91 lakh on Dec 31, 2020, to 9.54 lakh as of July 28, 2025. Similarly, Andhra Pradesh saw its backlog increase from 6.49 lakh to 8.99 lakh during the same period.
Legal experts say the reasons behind the surge are multifold, from habitual adjournments to unfilled judicial vacancies and poor witness turnout. 'The biggest problem in both states is that instead of aiming for closure, parties or their advocates keep seeking adjournments.
Even a simple case ends up dragging for years,' said Ch Sudheer Kumar, senior advocate from Hyderabad.

He added, 'Police often file charge sheets but fail to appear in court, citing various reasons. The same goes for doctors and witnesses.'
Another major hurdle is the shortage of judges. 'Vacant posts are worsening the problem. In-charge judges, already overburdened, can only assign new hearing dates and rarely get to conduct actual proceedings,' Kumar pointed out.

Renuka Yeradesi, another senior advocate, said litigants are also partly responsible. 'Clients often hide information, especially in family court matters. Once one side makes an allegation, the other comes up with a counter without revealing the full picture. This delays the trial process further,' she said.
According to figures presented in the Lok Sabha, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka reported relatively lower increases in pending cases, at 24.5% and 29.3%, respectively.
Kerala, notably, reduced its pendency by 16.47% over the same period.
Nationally, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana stand at eighth and ninth positions in terms of pendency growth. Though the absolute numbers are fewer, Manipur topped the list with a staggering 98% increase, followed by Jammu and Kashmir and West Bengal.

SIR very big issue, govt must agree for a debate

New Delhi: Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Monday said the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls in Bihar is a 'very big' issue, and the government should agree to a discussion on it and move forward. She asked why the opposition should not continue to raise the issue when the matter pertains to voters' list. The Congress general secretary's remarks came after the Lok Sabha was adjourned till 2 pm due to protests by opposition parties demanding discussion on voter roll revision in Bihar. Asked about the opposition continuing to raise the SIR issue, Priyanka Gandhi said, 'It is a very big issue. If all this is being done to the voters' list why should we not raise it?' 'The government should agree to a discussion and move forward, why not,' she told reporters in the Parliament House complex. Several MPs of the INDIA bloc parties have been protesting daily in the Parliament House complex against the Election Commission's voter roll revision in Bihar, and demanding its rollback. The protest, however, was not held on Monday in view of the passing away of former Jharkhand chief minister Shibu Seoren. The opposition has been protesting in both Houses of Parliament against the SIR, alleging the EC's exercise was aimed at 'disenfranchising voters' in Bihar ahead of the Assembly elections. They have been demanding a discussion on the issue in both Houses.

'Decision made': Israel to take full control of the Gaza Strip? IDF may enter hostage-held areas

In a major development, Israel may come up with a new plan for Gaza Strip that may include the possibility of taking full control of the Palestinian enclave and escalating military action in areas they have refrained from entering, according to local media reports. This signals a dramatic escalation in its nearly two-year-long war against the Hamas terror group. Quoting a senior source in Netanyahu's office, prominent Israeli journalist Amit Segal of Channel 12 reported, 'The decision has been made… we are going to occupy the Gaza Strip." The move comes amid a total breakdown in ceasefire negotiations and growing frustration within the Israeli leadership over the lack of progress on freeing hostages held by Hamas since the conflict's early days. "Hamas will not release hostages without total surrender. If we do not operate now, the hostages will die of starvation, and Gaza will remain under Hamas' control," Segal quoted the official as saying, according to a report from Fox News. A turning point in a protracted war The Israeli Security Cabinet is set to convene on Tuesday to finalise the next steps in Gaza. According to The Times of Israel, several ministers confirmed that Netanyahu has privately used the term "occupation of the Strip" to describe his intentions, a sharp pivot from the government's previous reluctance to re-enter densely populated zones. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Top Audiologists Angry About New $160 Device That Makes Hearing Crystal Clear Again Top Trending News Today Learn More Undo A senior official quoted by the Ynet news site said bluntly, "The die is cast — we are going for a full occupation of the Gaza Strip." Currently, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) control around 75% of Gaza's territory. The new plan would see Israeli forces enter all remaining areas, including zones where hostages are reportedly being held, a controversial move that could risk the lives of captives and escalate civilian casualties. Divisions within Israeli leadership According to The Times of Israel, the reported shift has exposed internal cracks within Israel's military and political establishment. According to Hebrew media, IDF Chief of Staff Lt Gen Eyal Zamir opposes the occupation strategy. In response, a senior source close to Netanyahu allegedly said, "If the chief of staff doesn't agree, he should resign." The rift underscores the deep unease surrounding the operational and humanitarian implications of such a full-scale takeover, especially at a time when Gaza's infrastructure is in ruins, and humanitarian aid remains insufficient. US envoy's visit fails to halt escalation The decision to escalate comes just days after US Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff visited Israel to promote a new peace framework. Despite assurances that negotiations were ongoing, both sides now appear to have abandoned diplomatic channels. Netanyahu's reported plan, if approved, could have sweeping consequences for Gaza's over two million residents, as well as for regional stability. Aid agencies have warned that continued fighting, especially in densely populated urban pockets, could trigger a humanitarian catastrophe.
