Off-duty Louisville Metro Police officer arrested in Hardin County for DUI

Yahoo10-06-2025
A Louisville Metro Police officer has been placed on paid administrative leave after being arrested for allegedly driving a motorcycle while intoxicated in Hardin County.
An arrest citation shows that Kenneth Lawrence, 31, of Rineyville, was arrested by Kentucky State Police June 4. He is charged with a DUI, improper display of registration plates and failure to notify the proper departments of an address change.
Lawrence, who was off-duty at the time of his arrest, was driving along Dixie Highway on a motorcycle when KSP conducted a traffic stop. He had allegedly been driving with an expired registration plate and told troopers that he had just purchased the vehicle.
The LMPD officer informed KSP he was wearing his off-duty gun and was able to provide proof of registration and insurance for the motorcycle. At that time, the arresting trooper was able to smell alcohol on Lawrence and asked him if he had been drinking.
Lawrence said he had a few beers but stopped three to four hours before driving and he agreed to a field sobriety test.
KSP said in the arrest citation that Lawrence could not maintain his balance and forgot to look at his toes during the one leg stand test. Troopers believed Lawrence was "near the legal limit" and he was asked to do a breathalyzer test. After several minutes, Lawrence refused and he was arrested.
While arresting Lawrence, KSP asked if his address remained the same as on his driver's license. He provided a different address and said he had been living there for more than a month.
Lawrence was eventually taken to the Radcliff Police Department, where officials said his mouth was "visually inspected for any foreign substances." He also agreed to a breathalyzer test about an hour and a half after the traffic stop, blowing a 0.077, which is just below the legal limit.
Lawrence declined a blood test and was taken to the Hardin County Detention Center on several charges. Jail records further show that Lawrence was released at around 8 a.m. June 5.
LMPD spokesperson Matthew Sanders said the agency has launched an internal investigation.
Lawrence is set to make his first court appearance June 25.

7 missing after explosion at California fireworks warehouse sets off massive blaze

Seven people were missing Wednesday following an explosion at a fireworks warehouse in rural Northern California that caused a massive fire that spread to farm fields and forced evacuations in the surrounding community, authorities said. Two people were injured and received medical care, Esparto Fire Chief Curtis Lawrence said at a news conference Wednesday. Lawrence provided no further information other than to say the two were 'OK,' and it wasn't known if the victims worked at the facility. Emergency crews and investigators were working with the property's owner and monitoring the area using drones to find the missing individuals, said the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. It was not immediately clear if those missing worked at the warehouse or lived nearby. Advertisement 3 Smoke and flames rise at a fireworks warehouse near Esparto, Calif., on Tuesday, July 1, 2025. Yolo County fireworks explosion: 1 dead, several people missing after California warehouse erupts

Multiple people were missing Wednesday after a fireworks facility in Northern California exploded on Tuesday and triggered a large fire, Cal Fire authorities said. At least one person was killed by the blast, according to a law enforcement source familiar with the situation, though it was not clear if that person was among the seven reported missing by Cal Fire. First responders and investigators were working with the property's owner and monitoring the area using aircraft systems to find the individuals, according to a Cal Fire statement Wednesday. Videos and photos reviewed by the Chronicle show a scene of rubble and debris, with shrapnel scattered around the flattened site. It was not immediately clear if the missing individuals worked at the warehouse or lived in the area. A joint statement by officials from Marysville, Yuba City as well as Sutter and Yuba counties later confirmed the warehouse belonged to Devastating Pyrotechnics. The company's website appeared to be nonoperational Wednesday afternoon. The blast occurred at around 6 p.m. Tuesday in the rural community of Esparto, 40 miles northwest of Sacramento, and led to the building's collapse, according to the Yolo County Sheriff's Office. A blaze soon broke out, which Cal Fire termed Oakdale Fire, and quickly spread into nearby vegetation along Highway 16 and Oakdale Ranch Lane. Smoke plumes from the fire appeared to reach over 15,000 feet in elevation. In an afternoon press briefing, Esparto Fire Chief Curtis Lawrence said two people were injured and received medical care. Lawrence did not comment whether the victims worked at the facility. Officials said the area remained under an evacuation order Wednesday afternoon. The cause of the explosion was under investigation, authorities said, and their investigation will look into whether operations within the facility complied with license requirements. Officials in nearby Sutter and Yuba counties announced Wednesday that they were exploring alternatives for Fourth of July celebrations after their fireworks were destroyed in the blast. Louisville man convicted of chaining woman to floor learns sentence

A Louisville man accused of chaining a woman to the floor of a Park Hill neighborhood home in 2023 was sentenced to 30 years in prison by a Jefferson District Court judge July 2. Moises May, 38, received the sentence after he was found guilty by a jury April 1 on felony charges of human trafficking, kidnapping and intimidation, and misdemeanor charges of harassment, assault and terroristic threats. 'Our community has no tolerance for cruelty and depravity," Commonwealth's Attorney Gerina Whethers said in a statement. "Every new law that gives us more tools to combat heinous crimes makes a difference The victim in this case experienced circumstances no one should ever have to go through." According to court records, Louisville Metro Police officers were dispatched in August 2023 to a two-story house in the 1700 block of Bolling Avenue in Park Hill after a call came in from neighbors reporting a woman screaming for help. Upon arrival, officers discovered the first floor of the house was barricaded and that all the doors were screwed shut. Ladders were reportedly required to gain access to the second floor of the home, where the woman was found chained to the floor by a metal dog collar, according to court records. The Courier Journal does not name victims of crimes unless they choose to be identified. According to an arrest citation, May and the woman were arguing when May allegedly grabbed her and held her down on a bathroom floor "while he used a machete to cut off a most of her hair." May then "slapped the victim around" before she was able to leave, court records show. He then took her phone so she could not call for help. The woman was later able to break open a window and scream for help, prompting bystanders to call the police, the citation said. LMPD, along with Louisville Fire and Rescue, responded to the call and were able to rescue the victim and treat her for minor injuries.
