'Better again': Lions to step it up against Waratahs

Yahoo5 days ago
Not content with two half-century scorelines, the British and Irish Lions are promising the NSW Waratahs no let-up.
After piling on more than 50 points against both the Western Force and Queensland Reds, the rampant tourists tackle the Waratahs in Sydney on Saturday intent on shifting up yet another gear.
With a huge squad of almost double the amount of players needed for the first Test against the Wallabies in Brisbane on July 19, the Lions hopefuls are hungry to impress coach Andy Farrell and push for a place in the match-day 23.
"That's the ultimate goal, isn't it, for everyone here. They want to play in those Tests and the only way to do that is to play well in these in all these games leading up to it," said Irish lock Tadhg Beirne, who will captain the Lions at Allianz Stadium.
"If you're not producing in these games, you're not giving yourself a fighting chance.
"Everyone here wants to be in that 23 so everyone's going to put their best foot forward."
That could spell trouble for the undermanned Waratahs, who are missing several Wallabies on duty for Sunday's season-opening international against Fiji in Newcastle.
Bookmakers are giving the Tahs no hope, offering the hosts 40 points start in head-to-head betting.
In a chilling warning to Dan McKellar's side, fellow Irish second-rower James Ryan says the Lions are out to improve on their eight-try victories over both the Force and Reds in the past week.
"It's about just getting better again,' Ryan said on Friday.
"We thought we took a step forward on Wednesday in terms of our performance, discipline and some of our defensive work was better against the Reds than maybe it was against the Force.
"So we want to just push on the standard now again. You know the Tests are coming up in the next couple of weeks, so it's just about getting better tomorrow night.
"That's the main thing."
Captaining NSW in the absence of Wallabies star Jake Gordon, lock Hugh Sinclair says the Waratahs are embracing their big underdogs' tag.
"We've been lucky that a lot of the (Waratahs) coaches and the players that we have have been involved in Test matches and they've spoken heavily throughout the week that it is a Test match," Sinclair said.
"A lot of us haven't had those sort of weeks and those experiences, but we're treating it that way and we want to put in a performance. We don't want to get beaten by 50."
"We've talked about the Olympics is every four years, but the Lions is every 12 years so many players don't get an opportunity to play against them, so we're extremely fortunate to be able to be in this position.
"The boys are just excited."
Win or lose, it will be the retiring Sinclair's last match for the Waratahs and says the honour ranks as the highlight of his career.
"I actually played the curtain raiser in 2013 for Northern Suburbs at the old stadium so that was pretty cool.
"To captain this state and to do it against the British and Irish Lions, it will be my greatest rugby memory for sure."

'Outstanding servant': AFL world reacts amid sad 27-year first for Cornes family

AFL fans are commending Port Adelaide for their difficult call to part ways with assistant coach Chad Cornes, ending a 27-year connection for the famed Cornes family. Chad Cornes is one of the longest-serving figures in Port Adelaide's history, having played 239 games for the club and then becoming an assistant coach. After playing for Port from 1998 to 2011, Cornes returned to coach their SANFL side in 2016 and then became an AFL assistant at the end of 2017. But incoming head coach Josh Carr - who will take over from Ken Hinkley next season - has made his first major decision to axe Cornes. Cornes and Carr were actually premiership teammates in Port's flag-winning season in 2004, but Carr has identified the need for a shake-up in the club's coaching ranks. Port made the announcement about Cornes' departure on Tuesday, after Hinkley's weekly media conference. "Chad has been an outstanding servant of our club as a premiership player, as a coach within our program since returning at the end of 2015 and of course as a member of our Hall of Fame," said the club's football boss Chris Davies. "Given his tenure at the club we wanted to provide Chad with clarity as early as possible so he has maximum time to consider his future." The Cornes family's connection to South Australian footy dates back decades. Father Graham was the inaugural coach of the Adelaide Crows in 1991, and held the role until 1994. He previously played for Glenelg in the 60s and South Adelaide in the 80s, and also coached the South Australian state team. Chad's younger brother Kane played 300 games for Port from 2001 to 2015, and has since transitioned into a role in the media. Kane holds roles with Channel 7, and SEN radio, and has become one of the most talked-about analysts in the game. Chad's departure from Port marks the first time in 27 years (dating back to 1998) that at least one member of the Cornes family hasn't held a role at an AFL club as either a player or coach. It means Port will soon have at least two vacancies on their coaching staff, with Hinkley set to hand over the reins to Carr in 2026. He's slowly been helping Carr step into the head-coaching role, including during a recent game against Carlton in which Carr appeared to be running the show. "It's unusual," Kane Cornes said on Channel 7 when he spotted Hinkley at the back of the coach's box and Carr down the front. "He's in the back row of the box and it looks like Josh Carr will be pulling the strings tonight. Just the way Carr is positioned in the box, it looks like Ken will have a more hands-off approach." On social media, Port fans expressed their sadness that Chad Cornes is departing. However the general consensus is the club needs to make tricky calls to set them up for long-term success. The right move. Carr making tough calls already? Great stuff. — Nick Turner (@nickturner_11) July 8, 2025 Legend of the club. Good move though Ports. Thanks Chad. — . (@coachjc88) July 8, 2025 Like this from Carr.. shows he isn't going to be Ken's clone and will make his own path.. exactly what is needed. I'm hoping for big changes, otherwise we may as well have just kept Ken — ScoVo (@Sco_Vo) July 8, 2025 Legend of the club as a player but god damn.. this is well overdue a step in the right direction. — Samuel Power 🇦🇺 (@SamuelPower68) July 8, 2025 with AAP

'Needs to happen now': Fresh calls for premiership-winning NRL coach to quit

Titans coach Des Hasler is facing more questions over his future with claims he won't be coach of the battling club next year as Corey Parker doubles down on his comments. The Titans are sitting last on the NRL ladder after 18 rounds with just four wins for the season. Hasler was brought into the side in 2024 to turn around their fortunes, but finished 14th. The team is not doing any better this season and are once again set to miss finals footy as they battle to avoid the wooden spoon. Despite a number of injuries to the team, Hasler has a number of representative players available for selection and still hasn't been able to rally his players this season. There has also been reports the premiership-winning coach could be set to call time on his career at the end of the season. Hasler moved to shut down the speculation after his team's loss to the Eels in round 17. 'No, they're just whispers, mate. It's just rumour and innuendo," Hasler said of the speculation he is going to retire. The reports have not sat well with everyone. The speculation prompted Queensland great Parker to suggest the club should part ways with Hasler immediately if this season will be his last. And since the development, reporter Michael Carayannis has claimed Hasler won't be at the Titans in 2026. 'It'll be called a retirement but it's a mutual understanding,' Carayannis said on SEN Radio. 'The Titans can call it whatever they like but Des won't be the coach next season. It's been an absolute failure.' Earlier in the season, reports emerged the Titans have the option in Hasler's contract to part ways with the coach if the club don't make the top eight. And Carayannis claimed the club could move on this clause with the Titans facing a brutal run to make finals footy. 'He originally signed a three-year deal but there's clauses in his deal and one of those is a top eight clause,' Carayannis added. 'That is if they don't make the top eight this year, the Titans are under no obligation to keep him at the club next year. "There's another element to it and that's when they are mathematically no chance of playing finals footy, they can split immediately.' The Titans would have to win the large majority of their remaining nine games to play finals footy in 2025. RELATED: NSW ditch pre-match tradition in stunning move for Origin 3 Broncos cop double blow as two players sidelined for weeks Parker again addressed the Hasler reports after Carayannis' update and doubled down on his suggestion the club should act immediately. Parker feels the Titans would be better off moving on if the coach has one-eye on retirement. 'Only two people would know he is going to retire – Des and the owners,' Parker said on SENQ Breakfast. 'If that's the case, there is no upside to him sticking around for the remaining part of the year. Whether he wants to get to 500 games I don't know but if he wants to retire it needs to happen now. There is no upside (to staying)." Hasler won two premierships during his time as the Manly Sea Eagles coach. He also reached the finals with the Bulldogs in 2012 and 2014.
