BJP conducting this for political gains: TN Minister Sekar Babu on Murugan conference in Madurai
Speaking to ANI, Sekar mentioned that they did not call any politicians and ask for money from any devotees when they conducted the conference.
'The Tamil Nadu state government didn't call any politicians, and we didn't ask for any money from devotees when we conducted the Lord Murugan Conference. They (BJP) are conducting this conference for political gains,' Sekar Babu said.
However, Tamil Nadu BJP Chief Nainar Nagendran neglected DMK's claims and said that the conference is completely spiritual.
'This conference is completely Spiritual. I am not totally aware whether such a conference has been organised earlier. There is no politics in this... any party can participate in this... We are inviting everyone to this, and it's not even 1% political... I have mentioned earlier calling for unity for alliance, but we haven't received any reply so far from others,' Nagendran said on Tuesday.
Earlier on Wednesday, DMK's youth wing, Dravidar Kazhagam, held a protest against the Union government for not recognising the Keeladi excavations report.
This came after the Union Minister for Culture and Tourism, Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, on June 10 said the reports submitted to the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) by archaeologist Amarnath Ramakrishna, who headed two phases of excavations and unearthed an ancient civilisation in Keeladi in the Sivaganga district, are not technically well supported. 'Further scientific studies are required to validate the findings,' he said.
Recently, the ASI had asked Ramakrishna to resubmit his report on the excavation after making necessary corrections to make it 'more authentic' and to take further action.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin on Tuesday slammed the Centre for not validating an archaeological report that unearthed an ancient civilisation in Keeladi in the Sivaganga district.
'How many obstacles are there for our Tamil race? For thousands of years, we have resisted all of them, establishing the greatness of our heritage with the support of science!' Stalin said in a post on X.
'Yet, some minds still refuse to accept it. It is not the reports that need correction; it is some hearts! Tomorrow, in Veeranoor, Madurai, let us gather in large numbers at the protest organised by DMK Student Wing to express the sentiments of Tamil Nadu to the Union Government! Let us make them correct their ways,' he added. (ANI)

Election Commission rejects Rahul Gandhi's ‘atom bomb' claims
The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Friday termed as 'baseless and irresponsible' Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's claim his party had uncovered an 'atom bomb' of evidence proving voters lists were manipulated on a large scale, and said that it ignores such statements. Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi said the Congress began investigating after noticing irregularities during the Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Lok Sabha elections. He alleged that over 10 million voters were fraudulently added to the rolls. (Sansad TV) 'We dug deep because the Election Commission wasn't helping,' Gandhi told reporters outside Parliament. 'What we found is an atom bomb. When it explodes, you won't be able to see the Election Commission in India.' The Leader of Opposition said the party began investigating after noticing irregularities during the Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Lok Sabha elections. He alleged that over 10 million voters were fraudulently added to the rolls. 'There was a suspicion in the elections in Madhya Pradesh and the Lok Sabha, and it deepened in the Maharashtra assembly polls. At the state level, we believed there was a vote theft,' Gandhi said. 'It took us six months to study this in detail.' Gandhi issued a warning: 'Whoever is doing this, from top to bottom in the ECI, we won't spare you. You're working against the nation. This is treason.' In response, ECI said, 'The Election Commission ignores such baseless allegations being made on a daily basis and despite the daily threats being given, (it) asks all election officials to ignore such irresponsible statements and work in a fair and transparent manner.' The Congress has repeatedly accused the ECI of acting like a 'biased umpire', particularly in its handling of the 2024 general elections and multiple assembly polls. ECI said it had sent a mail to Gandhi on June 12 after previous allegations, but had not received a response. 'He has never sent any letter to ECI on any issue, whatsoever,' the election watchdog said. The latest accusation comes amid a broader protest by the opposition INDIA bloc over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of Bihar's electoral rolls, which they claim is a BJP-backed attempt to disenfranchise voters. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge had also blamed the poll body on July 6, saying, 'With the cooperation of the Election Commission, the BJP's master plan to deprive crores in Bihar of their voting rights now seems to be ensnaring them. Forcibly disenfranchising the poor, Dalits, backwards — this is the BJP-RSS conspiracy.' Following a joint strategy meeting, the INDIA bloc parties on Thursday announced they will intensify their protests –– both in and outside Parliament. ECI published the draft electoral rolls for Bihar on Friday. Responding to Gandhi's claim , the BJP asked him to 'flow like water' instead of considering to 'explode like a bomb'. 'Will Rahul Gandhi explode like a bomb? What do you think? Their job is to explode. They have no other work to do,' BJP leader Sambit Patra told reporters at the BJP headquarters. He said the Opposition party speaks of such things because they have no faith in democracy. 'We are those who have faith in democracy. If they explode an atom bomb, we will save the Constitution,' Patra said.

Ex-CJI Khanna to appear before joint polls House panel on Aug 19
Former CJI Sanjiv Khanna is scheduled to interact with the Joint Committee of Parliament on the 'One Nation, One Election' (ONOE) Bill, on August 19, according to the meeting notice issued on Thursday. The committee, chaired by BJP MP P P Chaudhary, has held nine meetings so far. Former CJIs D Y Chandrachud, J S Khehar and U U Lalit have already interacted with the committee. As per the notice, the committee will hold a meeting on August 11 and interact with political scientists and experts and then hold the meeting with ex-CJI Khanna. If passed, the Bills would pave the way for simultaneous elections to the Lok Sabha and State/UT Assemblies in 2034.

Former VC, educationist V Vasanthi Devi passes away
Chennai: Former vice-chancellor of Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, Tirunelveli, and human rights activist V Vasanthi Devi, who contested against J Jayalalithaa from R K Nagar in 2016, passed away following cardiac arrest at her native place Vilachery, Madurai, on Friday. She was 87. Born in 1938 in Dindigul, Vasanthi Devi moved to the then Madras at the age of 15 to complete her higher secondary education. She graduated in history from Presidency College, Chennai, and moved to Philippines in the 1970s for her PhD at the University of the Philippines. After returning to India in the 1980s, she worked as a professor at Queen Mary's College, Chennai, and was subsequently appointed principal of Govt College for Women, Kumbakonam, between 1988 and 1990. In 1992, she became the first vice-chancellor of Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, a post she held till 1998. She was the first woman vice-chancellor of any state university (barring Mother Teresa Women's University). Between 2002 and 2005, she served as chairperson of the Tamil Nadu state commission for women. Her father P V Das was a freedom fighter and ardent follower of Chittaranjan Das; he named her Vasanthi Devi, Tamil version of Basanti Devi, wife of Chittaranjan Das. Vasanthi Devi was attracted to Marxism during her college days and was known for playing a vital role in many demonstrations for education and human rights. She wrote half-a-dozen books including 'Sakthi Pirakkum Kalvi', 'Kalvi Or Arasiyal' and 'Makkal Mayamaagum Kalvi'. She is survived by a son Narendra Subramanian, a political scientist and professor at McGrill University, Canada, and a daughter Ajantha Subramaniam, professor of anthropology and south Asian studies, Harvard University. "While this is an immense loss to all of us, we remember her as a remarkable person who was deeply engaged in various fields — the teachers' movement to start with, the movement for the right to education and the broader struggle for human rights," said human rights activist Henri Thiphagne in his condolence message. Chief minister in his condolence message said, "Vasanthi Devi continuously fought against communalising and commercialising of education and against Union govt's centeralisation of powers." Other political leaders also condoled Vasanthi Devi's death.
