Spartans' Aidan Chiles snubbed in On3's top Big Ten quarterbacks rankings
Staples put out his top 10 quarterbacks in the Big Ten list earlier this week, with Chiles failing to be included. You can see the top 10 list of quarterbacks from Staples in the social media X post below:
Staples' list and opinion on Chiles aligns with Paul Myerberg of USA TODAY Sports, who also had him as a back half of the Big Ten quarterback in his recent preseason rankings. Myerberg has Chiles listed as the No. 12 quarterback in his Big Ten rankings released earlier this month.
Chiles is entering his second year as the Spartans' starter at quarterback, looking for more consistency from game-to-game. He finished last season with 2,415 passing yards, 13 touchdowns and 11 interceptions with a completion percentage just under 60%. The bright spot, though, for Chiles was his growth during the second half the season where he only threw three of his 11 interceptions in the final six games of the year.
For Michigan State to get back to a bowl game or above this season, Chiles will need to play like an upper half quarterback in the Big Ten. So, hopefully, if Staples were to do a postseason version of these same rankings, we will be seeing Chiles' name on that list unlike these preseason rankings.

Ex-Steeler Najee Harris receives eye injury update following fireworks mishap
Almost two weeks after sustaining an eye injury from a July 4 fireworks-related incident, ex-Steeler Najee Harris has received an injury update courtesy of ESPN — and it's looking like the new Chargers running back will start training camp on the non-football injury/illness list. ESPN's Kris Rhim reported that Chargers GM Joe Hortiz believes Harris' time on the NFI list could be short — but the team's medical staff hasn't evaluated him yet. "Surface-level injury," Hortiz said, via Rhim. "Obviously around the eye, so I'm sure there's bruising and all that. We haven't seen him, so we'll get more clarity when he gets in here and our doctors see him." Rhim also noted that if Harris remains on the NFI list after roster cuts, he would be forced to miss the first four games of the Chargers' regular season. When the fireworks mishap was first reported, Harris' agent alleviated initial concerns — claiming the eye injury was "superficial." Florida QB was 'definitely considering' Texas A&M before committing to the Gators
On Wednesday, during the third day of this week's SEC media days, the Florida Gators were one of three teams that spoke to the media, which included sophomore and former five-star quarterback DJ Lagway, who was one of Texas A&M's long-time recruiting targets in the 2024 recruiting class. Similar to Texas A&M quarterback Marcel Reed, Lagway was thrust into the starting lineup during his 2024 freshman season due to quarterback Graham Mertz's injury issues, leading to Lagway taking over as the full-time starter down the stretch and helping the Gators to an 8-5 finish. In 12 appearances, Lagway threw for 1,915 yards, 12 touchdowns, and nine interceptions, and is expected to take a significant jump in 2025. During his media appearance on Wednesday, Lagway was asked about his connection to Texas A&M, with fans and Aggie media members recalling it as one of the tightest recruiting battles just months after former A&M head coach Jimbo Fisher was fired. A Willis, Texas native, Lagway was a small school product with one of the biggest arms since former Clemson and current Jacksonville Jaguars QB Trevor Lawrence's prep days. When asked if he seriously considered the Aggies even after Fisher was dismissed, Lagway was quick to state that Texas A&M was his first offer, and could have been his future destination if it wasn't for the Gators' late momentum. "Yes sir, I was definitely considering A&M… actually A&M was my first SEC offer" Lagway stated. "In being right down the road, they have a great program, Coach Elko has done an amazing job over there." Lagway further pointed out that Florida's "gameday atmosphere" ultimately sold him, and while there was a slim possibility that he could enter the transfer portal, winning five out of six games with Lagway at the helm was more than enough to keep him committed to the program. Florida will visit Texas A&M on Saturday, October 11. Lagway, who traded reps with Mertz during Florida's loss to the Aggies last season, will visit Kyle Field for the first time as a player and is very excited to potentially pull off an SEC road upset. R Mason Thomas leaning into the high expectations for the Oklahoma Sooners
Oklahoma Sooners defensive end R Mason Thomas was one of three OU players chosen to represent the program at SEC media days on Wednesday. After a breakout campaign in 2024, where he turned into OU's best pass-rusher, Thomas is ready for the added weight of expectations in 2025. Speaking to the media this week, Thomas was asked about having a different play-caller this year. Head coach Brent Venables is taking over play-calling duties after former defensive coordinator Zac Alley left for West Virginia. Thomas believes that not much will change, as it has always been Venables' system. "It's the same thing," Thomas said. "Since 2022, my first year, when he first got here, it's the same thing. You would think it would be some kind of drop-off, but he's a defensive mind. He's always on the on defensive side of the ball, so it's the same. It's no drop-off. We don't have to change language or anything like that. It's the same playbook. With him it's always been like that. We weren't nervous. We weren't frustrated. We weren't rattled. It was the same." Thomas was also asked about the process of Venables getting his system installed over the years in Norman. "When I was getting recruited at OU, it was a lot of Clemson film," Thomas said. "I think now we ran a lot of plays like he did in Clemson. It was like we're looking at what we do now, more of -- I know my first year we were looking at Clemson a lot because we didn't have any film of us doing it. Yeah, we have so much film of us doing it now so we're watching ourselves." Thomas also spoke about the pressure and the expectations after his big 2024 season, and the pressure that comes with playing at a place like Oklahoma. He knows that the Sooners have plenty of room to improve after last year. "I don't think we in a sense have pressure," Thomas said. "We know what the standard is, what the people in the team in the past have set. So I know if we can put our head down, we can work, focus on the journey and not the destination, we'll be right where we want to be." After the NFL came calling this winter, Thomas decided to come back for one more year of college football, one more year in Venables' scheme, and the opportunity to get the bad taste of 2024 out of his mouth.
