Kota Kinabalu: An international-standard pickleball facility in Sutera Harbour was officially launched by Minister of Industrial Development and Entrepreneurship, Datuk Phoong Jin Zhe at the Pacific Sutera Hotel on Saturday. It was developed through a collaboration between Sutera Harbour Group and Pickle Collective and the aim is to promote sports tourism and active lifestyles in Sabah. Phoong, impressed with the top class facility, hopes that more would be introduced in Kota Kinabalu. 'With the view and setting offered at Sutera Harbour, I believe this is the best pickleball courts in Malaysia. 'This new facility will bring excitement and enjoyment to the community. I hope DBKK will consider building more such facilities in the city,' he said. Meanwhile, pickleball player Stefan Walter Sundang Alex who was present said the facility was a much-needed addition to the growing pickleball scene in Sabah. 'Pickleball is still a very new sport here as it was only introduced about two years ago, but the community has been growing steadily. The court here certainly matches the standards found in the Peninsular.' Among those present at the ceremony were Pickle Collective co-founders Christopher Soo , Hanno Tam and Tan Ju En. Sutera Harbour Group deputy chief executive officer Gerry D'Cruz in his speech, said the new facility aligns with Sutera Harbour's efforts to become one of Asean's leading lifestyle destinations. 'Spanning over 384 acres, Sutera Harbour continues to introduce exciting experiences that benefit both the community and the tourism sector. The addition of Pickle Collective's courts supports this mission. 'This is more than just new courts. It represents a meaningful partnership that promotes wellness, innovation, and community spirit. Now with the addition of naturalised players, the combination with the heritage players has given the team much more depth in quality. A clear picture was the win against Vietnam where there were nine heritage and naturalised players in the starting 11. The only locals on the list were Arif Aiman and goalkeeper Syihan Hazmi. Not forgetting on the bench, there were some more heritage and naturalised players. SST is another blow for Sabah SMEs: FSI
Published on: Sunday, June 29, 2025 Published on: Sun, Jun 29, 2025 Text Size: Kota Kinabalu: The Federation of Sabah Industries (FSI) expressed concern over the recently announced Sales and Service Tax (SST) scope expansion effective July 1, cautioning that the move will further burden Sabah's SMEs and increase inflationary pressures within the state. FSI Treasurer Sylvester Chua Yong Pheng said Sabah businesses are already operating in a high-cost environment compared to Peninsular Malaysia, grappling with elevated logistics, operational, and infrastructure costs. The introduction of additional SST coverage at this point is expected to escalate the cost of doing business and ultimately be passed down to consumers. 'We welcome the Prime Minister's recent announcement to exempt apples and oranges from Sales Tax, which is a positive move for consumers. However, Sabahan businesses need more time to improve their operational cost structures before additional tax measures are imposed,' said Chua, in a statement, Saturday. Chua added that the situation is further complicated by the upcoming implementation of the two per cent Employees Provident Fund (EPF) contributions for foreign workers effective October 2025. While recognising it as a good initiative for worker welfare, he warned that it would immediately impact the manufacturing sector's cost management and cash flow position. 'The issue lies in the timing. Sales Tax is liable for payment upon the issuance of invoices, and October and November are critical cash flow months for manufacturers. 'Implementing SST with no delay alongside new EPF obligations will place serious financial strain on Sabah manufacturers. It's a good initiative but the timing is wrong,' Chua said. In view of these challenges, FSI urged the government to consider postponing the implementation of the SST scope expansion to Jan 1 2026, allowing businesses time to adjust and manage their operations more sustainably. Additionally, FSI appealed for Sales Tax exemption on the importation of essential raw materials such as plastic resins to ease manufacturing costs and reduce extra compliance obligations for SMEs in Sabah.
