Jonathan Rea endures tough day on return to action: ‘I don't feel amazing'
Rea has been out of action since injuring his left foot in a crash in testing at Phillip Island in Australia at the end of February.
He was given the all-clear to race this weekend by the WSBK Medical Director but the record-breaking six-time world champion said it was a challenging comeback after such a long period out of the saddle.
Rea set his fastest lap in 1'30.547, which was 1.3 seconds down on pacesetter and championship leader Nicolo Bulega (Aruba.it Ducati).
'It's been a difficult day but firstly, my foot feels fine riding,' Rea said.
'I had a couple of areas where my foot was in the wrong position and when I ride with my big toe on the foot peg it feels quite painful but generally it's fine.
'Of course, it's been a long time off the bike and physically, I didn't feel amazing.
'However, I expected that to an extent and need some race fitness back.
'The R1 is quite different to when I last rode it and we worked through FP1 and FP2 with the same tyre set-ups to find the rhythm and still I didn't feel fully comfortable.
'We made some changes but nothing has really ticked the box yet to let me stop the bike in the way I really want to, so that's the focus for tonight to give me more confidence to reach the apex.
'We'll try to make a step tomorrow but – even if it's really tough – it's great to be back with the team and re-starting the journey to being fully competitive.'
Rea is competing at Cremona for the first time after he was ruled out of last year's inaugural round at the new WSBK venue because of injury.
Italian Bulega led the times by 0.307s from BMW's Toprak Razgatlioglu, who is also making his debut at Cremona this weekend after he, too, missed the 2024 race through injury.
Bulega finished second in the standings in a sensational rookie season in World Superbikes last year and currently leads Razgatlioglu by 21 points going into the fourth round.
The first race today is scheduled for 1300 BST with tomorrow's races at 1000 BST and 1300 BST.

The Bees have already rejected several bids for the Cameroon forward and United will have to pay more than they did for Cunha if they want to land him. An out and out striker is also on their radar, hence their interest in Kean. The forward previously endured a miserable time in England when he was on Everton's books. During his time with the Toffees he managed just four goals in 39 games between 2019 and 2022. He's since rebuilt his reputation with PSG and then back in Italy. His exploits have also attracted attention from Saudi side Al Qadsiah, but it remains unclear if he would be open to a move to the Middle East, whilst Amorim is yet to table a bid for a striker. He was keen on Liam Delap before he headed to Chelsea. One of Kean's lowest moments on English soil came at Old Trafford when then-interim Everton manager Duncan Ferguson substituted him just 18 minutes after bringing him on during a match against United that finished in a draw. Jadon Sancho sends three-word transfer message as Man Utd negotiations continue
Chelsea paid £5million to send Jadon Sancho back to Manchester United after an unconvincing loan spell and he's once again being touted for a transfer move this summer Manchester United outcast Jadon Sancho has sent a message to ex-team-mate Paul Pogba after he completed a long-awaited move to Monaco. Pogba, who left United in 2022, has joined the Ligue 1 side to end his two-year absence from football, having been banned for 18 months because of a doping offence. Sancho, 25, could follow Pogba in finding a new club this summer, as he appears to have no long-term future at Old Trafford. The Blues even paid United a £5million penalty fee in order to avoid having to go through with their £25m obligation to buy him at the end of last season. In the meantime, Sancho is on holiday and had time to send Pogba a message. On Instagram, his former team-mate had shared an image himself in a Monaco shirt. Sinner opens up on splitting with Djokovic's ex-coaches on eve of Wimbledon
Jannik Sinner has split with two of his coaches - who once helped Novak Djokovic land success - on the eve of Wimbledon but insists there was no ill-feeling between them Jannik Sinner has opted to split with physiotherapist Ulises Badio and fitness coach Marco Panichi, who both previously worked with Novak Djokovic, on the eve of Wimbledon but insists there's "nothing major" behind the decision. The Italian heads to SW19 off the back of a shock second round defeat at his warm-up tournament in Halle and has since rejigged his team. The world No.1 is still working with coaches Simone Vagnozzi and Darren Cahill. Sinner, who recently returned from a doping ban, has been among the tour's most successful players over the past 18 months. He's won three of the last six Grand Slams but is looking to make an impact at Wimbledon for the first time. The Italian was recently on the received end of a stunning Carlos Alcaraz comeback with the Spaniard winning the French Open recently despite trailing by two sets to Sinner. The Italian had three championship points in the fourth set before later losing in a five-set thriller. Sinner has once made the semi-finals at Wimbledon, that coming in 2023 when he was beaten by Djokovic. Last year he was ousted in the last eight when Daniil Medvedev beat him, although the Italian was not playing at 100 percent after calling for his trainer. Djokovic was quizzed on Sinner's decision to cut two coaches who previously worked with him and said: "I did work with Marco and Uli, and I think they are phenomenal professionals that both have contributed also a lot to me, to my team, to my success. "I don't know what the reasons are for the split with Jannik. It came as a surprise to me as well because I think Jannik's game and body really has improved so much in the last year, year and a half. They've been an integral part of that team. I don't know, to be honest."
