US attack on Iran ‘enhanced leverage' for Trump

Sky News AU01-07-2025
Former US ambassador William Courtney claims it was in America's national interest to bomb Iran and its nuclear facilities.
'For several decades, the West and international community have tried to negotiate with Iran to stop the program or at least limit it,' Mr Courtney told Sky News Australia.
'In 2015, there was an agreement to slow the program down.
'Unwisely, the US pulled out of that agreement, and the Iranians have expanded their capability.
'What Israel did and what the US did, both should enhance the leverage of the West to get an agreement that either limits the enrichment or maybe even ends it in Iran.'

Benjamin Netanyahu is ‘hanging on for political survival' after his popularity dips

Deakin University Global Islamic Politics Professor Greg Barton says Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has never been a great 'strategian' and is 'hanging on for political survival'. 'Social polling is pretty clear, he's way underwater in terms of net popularities,' Mr Barton told Sky News Australia. 'The Prime Minister, Bibi Netanyahu, is riding a tiger; he's scared of dismounting the tiger for fear of being eaten by the tiger. 'Israel has focused on tactical operations and not thought strategically about where it wants to go. 'In the absence of his own strategy, he gets pushed in the direction of those who are using leverage over him, and that's producing very tragic results for everyone at the moment.'

‘Fatigue is setting in': Ukrainian ambassador says Putin does not want to end war

Ukraine's Ambassador to Australia Vasyl Myroshnychenko says the Russia-Ukraine conflict will continue as Vladimir Putin believes he has the "upper hand". 'It's up to Putin to decide when it is going to be over,' Mr Myroshnychenko told Sky News Australia. 'It doesn't look like he wants to end; he feels like he is at an upper hand. 'Fatigue is settling in because it's been a four-year war, you know, Putin planned to take over Kyiv in three days, take over Ukraine in six weeks … he didn't succeed.'
