Oklahoma coach Brent Venables makes stunning confession on team's QB play last season
What possibly could go wrong did.
The offense struggled to score while dealing with a slew of injuries, particularly at wide receiver and on the line. Jackson Arnold, who was anointed as the person counted on to continue the Sooners' grand lineage of quarterback play going back to the turn of the century, was benched in their very first SEC game.
They set a single-season school record for sacks allowed. The woeful performance eventually cost Seth Littrell his job midway through his first season as offensive coordinator.
And, perhaps fittingly, a chance to salvage a winning season and a bowl game trophy went awry when Oklahoma failed to convert on a potential game-winning two-point conversion in its Armed Forces Bowl loss to Navy.
But after Brent Venables - entering his fourth season as OU head coach - received his very first question during his appearance at Wednesday's SEC Media Days in Atlanta, he immediately made a confession.
Venables admitted that he put both Arnold and freshman Michael Hawkins Jr., who replaced Arnold as OU's starting quarterback, in a bad spot due to the litany of injuries on offense, particularly at receiver.
'Certainly, it's hard to get a first down or two (with several receivers injured),' Venables said. 'But I take this moment just to say what type of a future that Jackson Arnold and Mike Hawkins (have), both of those guys put in a really tough spot as first-year players. It's a supporting cast that you know they can't play quarterback by themselves and ended up putting them in a really tough position, based on what happened, and both of them are going to be incredibly successful in the future.
'But that made it really difficult, and no excuses. What you would ideally like to see on any given Saturday, if you're going to be competitive and have a chance to win as an offense and a defense and in special teams that complement one another, not compensate for one another, and when you give the ball back more than you take it from the opponent. I know it's hard to win.'
Arnold, of course, moved on from Oklahoma after the season, transferring to SEC rival Auburn. Hawkins did stay with the Sooners, but appears to be the backup to new starting QB John Mateer, the Washington State transfer.

But if Hawkins finds himself under center for the Sooners in a key situation, hopefully for OU fans, he will have a healthy assortment of teammates, especially receivers, at his disposal.

Ex-NFL RB LeShon Johnson convicted on federal dogfighting charges
Former NFL running back LeShon Johnson has been convicted for his part in a large-scale dogfighting operation in Oklahoma, federal prosecutors announced. The 54-year-old Johnson was convicted of six felony counts of possessing dogs for use in an animal-fighting venture and acquitted of 17 other similar counts. Johnson is now facing up to five years in prison and fines of up to $250,000 for each count. He will be sentenced at a later date. 'This conviction sends a strong message that those who abuse animals for entertainment and profit will face serious consequences under federal law,' said Assistant Attorney General Adam Gustafson of the Justice Department's Environment and Natural Resources Division (ENRD) in a statement. 'ENRD's Environmental Crimes Section and our partners are committed to aggressively prosecuting individuals who perpetuate the brutal practice of dog fighting and to disrupting this illegal and inhumane industry.' Johnson allegedly ran the dogfighting operation, known as "Mal Kant Kennels," out of Broken Arrow and Haskell, Oklahoma. According to court documents, he bred 'champion' and 'grand champion' fighting dogs to produce offspring with abilities that would allow them to take part in dogfights. He was arrested on March 20 and released on bail. One week later, Johnson was indicted on federal charges after 190 dogs were seized from him in October under the Animal Welfare Act. 'He was simply a breeder of the American pit bull terrier,' said Johnson's lawyer, Billy Coyle. 'Obviously the jury found that some of his dogs bred were probably or were used in dog fighting, and those were difficult charges to fight.' In 2004, Johnson pled guilty to state animal fighting charges after running 'Krazyside Kennels." He received a five-year deferred sentence, according to court documents. Johnson, 54, played five seasons in the NFL with the Green Bay Packers, Arizona Cardinals and New York Giants. His career spanned from 1994-1999 after being a third-round draft pick out of Northern Illinois.

Johnson, a 1993 Heisman Trophy contender, also faces a fine of up to $250,000 on each of the six felony counts. According to the release, 'the government is pursuing forfeiture of these dogs.' How does the SEC stack up in CBS Sports 1-136 rankings for the 2025 season?
The 2025 college football season will kick off in just a few weeks. More than ever, the SEC feels wide open this season with a number of teams that have a legitimate shot at winning the conference. The Oklahoma Sooners enter the year with a lot to prove. The Sooners open the season unranked in the US LBM Coaches Poll for the first time in 25 years. As they say, it's not how you start, but how you finish. It will be an uphill climb for the Sooners in the SEC, and they'll have to overcome one of the more difficult schedules in the nation. Oklahoma will play seven teams ranked in the preseason US LBM Coaches Poll. Six of those teams are in the SEC, and each of them ranks ahead of the Sooners in CBS Sports' ranking of all 136 teams in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS). Here's a look at how the SEC stacks up. 70. Mississippi State Bulldogs SEC Rank: 16 US LBM Coaches Poll: Unranked Week 1: at Southern Mississippi Jeff Lebby has a tough road ahead for the Mississippi State Bulldogs. Any success they have will be predicated on the offense scoring a bunch of points, and that's going to require a bounce-back season from Blake Shapen. 57. Tennessee Volunteers SEC Rank: 8 US LBM Coaches Poll: 18 Week 1: vs. Syracuse Tennessee lost so much on both sides of the ball that they seem more likely to finish outside the top 25 at the end of the season than they do ranked. 18. Texas A&M Aggies SEC Rank: 7 US LBM Coaches Poll: 21 Week 1: vs. UTSA Texas A&M will look more like an old school type of football team, playing a smashmouth style with a strong running game and one of the best defenses in the SEC. 16. South Carolina Gamecocks SEC Rank: 6 US LBM Coaches Poll: 13 Week 1: vs. Virginia Tech The Gamecocks lost a lot from a defense that was really good but will have one of the best quarterbacks in the nation leading a South Carolina offense that averaged 30 points per game a season ago. Even if the defense takes a small step back from the 18.1 points per game they allowed last year, the Gamecocks will still be a SEC title contender. 12. Florida Gators SEC Rank: 5 US LBM Coaches Poll: 17 Week 1: vs. Long Island University The only team that might have a schedule as difficult as the Oklahoma Sooners is the Florida Gators. D.J. Lagway has a high ceiling, but injuries continue to limit his development. If he can shake of the injury bug, the Gators could improve from their 8-5 season a year ago. 9. LSU Tigers SEC Rank: 4 US LBM Coaches Poll: 9 Week 1: at Clemson Garrett Nussmeier is one of the best quarterbacks in the country heading into 2025 with a great grop of skill players around him. If the defense has made a jump, the LSU Tigers will be a legit title contender. 8. Alabama Crimson Tide SEC Rank: 3 US LBM Coaches Poll: 8 Week 1: at Florida State A pair of upsets to Vanderbilt and Oklahoma kept Alabama out of the College Football Playoff, but Kalen DeBoer had a solid first year and has a talented roster led by one of the best players in the game, wide receiver Ryan Williams. 5. Georgia Bulldogs SEC Rank: 2 US LBM Coaches Poll: 4 Week 1: vs. Marshall There hasn't been a more consistent program in the country than the Georgia Bulldogs over the course of Kirby Smart's tenure in Athens. History suggests the Bulldogs will win 10 games and be in the SEC championship game at the end of the season. 1. Texas Longhorns SEC Rank: 1 US LBM Coaches Poll: 1 Week 1: at Ohio State All eye will be on the Texas Longhorns in 2025.
