Houston Astros starting pitcher Ronel Blanco will have season-ending surgery on his right elbow next week.
The team announced the news Wednesday, the latest blow for the Houston pitching staff. Right-hander Hayden Wesneski underwent Tommy John surgery last week.
Blanco will be out the rest of this season and is expected to miss much of 2026.
The 31-year-old right-hander threw six innings in his most recent start, a 5-1 loss to the Texas Rangers on May 17. He gave up three runs on five hits with three walks and five strikeouts.
Last week, Blanco informed the Astros that he had a sore elbow and an MRI showed inflammation, the Houston Chronicle reported. He went on the 15-day injured list, retroactive to May 20, and the Astros recalled left-hander Colton Gordon from Triple-A Sugar Land.
Blanco is in his fourth major league season, all with the Astros. In 2024, he finished 13-6 with a 2.80 ERA in 30 games (29 starts). He threw his only career complete game in his season debut on April 1, no-hitting the Toronto Blue Jays in a 10-0 win.
This season, he is 3-4 with a 4.10 ERA in nine starts. He has struck out 48 batters in 48 1/3 innings and made four quality starts.

Vikings sideline Justin Jefferson with ‘very mild' hamstring strain

EAGAN, Minn. (AP) — The Minnesota Vikings will keep wide receiver Justin Jefferson off the field for awhile because of a mild strain of his left hamstring. Coach Kevin O'Connell said before practice on Friday that Jefferson would be re-evaluated next week. The two-time All-Pro, who has the most receiving yards in NFL history through a player's first five years, felt some tightness in his leg during the team's session on Thursday and cut short his participation as a precaution. The Vikings sent him for an MRI exam afterward.

The Vikings sent him for an MRI exam afterward. O'Connell described the injury as 'very mild' and said he had no concern about Jefferson being ready for the season opener at Chicago on Sept. 8, which is more than six weeks away. Still, considering his value to the team, the type of the injury and the demands of his position, Jefferson figures to miss more than just a few days of training camp practices. Jefferson suffered a significant strain of his right hamstring in 2023 that caused him to miss seven games. Thursdays Keep up to date on sports with Mike McIntyre's weekly newsletter. ___ AP NFL:

Lionel Messi, Jordi Alba avoid sanctions over All-Star snub

(Photo credit: Vincent Carchietta-Imagn Images) Inter Miami's Lionel Messi and Jordi Alba have not been sanctioned for skipping Wednesday's MLS All-Star Game in Austin, Texas, their coach confirmed Friday. Both players were voted into the showcase by the fans and media but neither featured in the MLS squad's 3-1 win against the Liga MX All-Stars. League rules stipulate that players who choose to opt out of the All-Star Game without an approved medical reason can face a one-match suspension. Inter Miami coach Javier Mascherano pointed out that his team had 'played the most games so far this semester, by far' and that Messi 'showed normal fatigue from the number of games and minutes he's been playing,' per ESPN. 'Look, players always have discomfort, especially when they play every three days. But luckily, (Messi) is returning today,' Mascherano said Friday. 'Let's hope he can train alongside the group so we can count on both of them for tomorrow's game. We haven't received any (sanction).' Inter Miami host FC Cincinnati on Saturday night at Chase Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Mascherano said Messi, 38, and Alba, 36, will be available for the match depending on their fitness levels. Messi shares the MLS lead with 18 goals and has 10 assists in 17 league matches this season. The Argentine forward also made six starts in the Concacaf Champions Cup and four in the FIFA Club World Cup. Alba has one goal and eight assists in 18 MLS matches. The Spanish defender made seven starts in the Champions Cup and one in the Club World Cup.
