Astros RHP Ronel Blanco to undergo elbow surgery, miss much of '26

(Photo credit: Raymond Carlin III-Imagn Images) Houston Astros starting pitcher Ronel Blanco will have season-ending surgery on his right elbow next week. The team announced the news Wednesday, the latest blow for the Houston pitching staff. Right-hander Hayden Wesneski underwent Tommy John surgery last week. Blanco will be out the rest of this season and is expected to miss much of 2026. The 31-year-old right-hander threw six innings in his most recent start, a 5-1 loss to the Texas Rangers on May 17. He gave up three runs on five hits with three walks and five strikeouts. Last week, Blanco informed the Astros that he had a sore elbow and an MRI showed inflammation, the Houston Chronicle reported. He went on the 15-day injured list, retroactive to May 20, and the Astros recalled left-hander Colton Gordon from Triple-A Sugar Land. Blanco is in his fourth major league season, all with the Astros. In 2024, he finished 13-6 with a 2.80 ERA in 30 games (29 starts). He threw his only career complete game in his season debut on April 1, no-hitting the Toronto Blue Jays in a 10-0 win. This season, he is 3-4 with a 4.10 ERA in nine starts. He has struck out 48 batters in 48 1/3 innings and made four quality starts.

Astros pitcher Lance McCullers Jr. activated off IL, set to start against Cubs

HOUSTON (AP) — Right-hander Lance McCullers Jr. is set to start for the Houston Astros on Saturday against the Chicago Cubs after the team activated him from the 15-day injured list. McCullers was placed on the injured list June 13. After missing two full seasons because of a right flexor tendon surgery, McCullers is 1-2 with a 4.91 ERA in seven starts this season, but he compiled a 3.20 ERA in his last five starts with 35 strikeouts over 25 1/3 innings. McCullers' return is welcome news for an Astros rotation that has lost Hayden Wesneski and Ronel Blanco for the rest of the season because of surgery and has been without Spencer Arrighetti since April after he suffered a broken right thumb during a batting practice accident. Houston is also without right-handers Luis Garcia and Cristian Javier, who are still recovering from Tommy John surgery. Despite being short-handed, the Astros entered Saturday with a 6 1/2-game lead in the American League West. Their 3.41 team ERA is tied for fourth best in the majors. The Astros optioned right-hander Nick Hernandez to make room on the roster for McCullers. ___ AP MLB:

Astros place rookie OF Zach Dezenzo (hand) on 10-day IL

June 2 - The Houston Astros placed rookie outfielder Zach Dezenzo on the 10-day injured list on Sunday because of inflammation in his left hand. In a corresponding move, the Astros selected the contract of top outfield prospect Jacob Melton from Triple-A Sugar Land. To make room for Melton on the 40-man roster, right-hander Ronel Blanco was transferred from the 15- to the 60-day injured list. Blanco is scheduled to have season-ending surgery on his right elbow this week. Dezenzo, 25, left Houston's 16-3 loss Saturday to the visiting Tampa Bay Rays after going 1-for-2 with one run scored. He is batting .245 with two homers and 10 RBIs in 34 games this season. Dezenzo played in 19 games in 2024, and for his career is hitting .244 with four homers and 18 RBIs in 53 games. Melton, 24, is the No. 2 prospect in the Astros organization per MLB Pipeline and No. 1 by Baseball America. Houston selected him in the second round of the 2022 MLB Draft out of Oregon State. He started Sunday's game in center field and batted eighth, going 1-for-3 with a single and two strikeouts in his major league debut as the Astros beat the Rays 1-0. --Field Level Media

Astros On 'Lookout' for Pitching After Injury; Could Mitch Keller Trade Be Answer?

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Houston Astros will be among the teams pursuing starting pitching at the trade deadline in July. After losing Ronel Blanco on Wednesday due to elbow surgery, the Astros' pitching depth is very thin. Entering Sunday, they were 31-27 and just a half-game behind the Seattle Mariners in the American League West. MLB insider Bob Nightengale reported Sunday the Astros will pursue a starting pitcher at the deadline. He also reported the Pirates are putting everyone on the table to be traded except Oneil Cruz and Paul Skenes. SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA - MAY 30: Mitch Keller #23 of the Pittsburgh Pirates pitches against the San Diego Padres during the first inning at Petco Park on May 30, 2025 in San Diego, California. SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA - MAY 30: Mitch Keller #23 of the Pittsburgh Pirates pitches against the San Diego Padres during the first inning at Petco Park on May 30, 2025 in San Diego, California."The Houston Astros say they are on the lookout for starting pitching after losing Ronel Blanco," wrote Nightengale. "He is the third Astros starter to go down in the season's first two months, joining Hayden Wesneski who underwent Tommy John surgery last week, and Spencer Arrighetti (broken thumb). ... The Pittsburgh Pirates are flatly rebuking all interest from teams wanting to engage in trade talks for ace Paul Skenes, but will listen to offers on every other player but him and outfielder Oneil Cruz." Keller is in the second year of his $77 million contract, so the Astros would have to pay the remainder of the $15.4 million he is owed this year plus the remaining $55.7 million The Pirates and Astros have been trade partners in the past for starting pitching as Houston was the landing spot for Gerrit Cole when he left Pittsburgh. If Keller is traded to the Astros, Ben Cherington's challenge will be to get a better return for Keller than his predecessor did for Cole. The Astros would have to cough up a considerable package for Keller since he has 3 1/2 years of team control remaining. This may deter them a bit, but it would all come down to a comparison between the cost for Keller and the cost for a rental at the deadline. Through 12 starts this season, Keller has a 3.73 ERA with 56 strikeouts. His record isn't pretty, but that's due to a lack of run support. Pittsburgh has scored a total of six runs in his last five starts, and four of them have ended in losses. Keller would be a good fit for the Astros, who would provide him with a lot more run support than the Pirates have this year. Houston would certainly get the most out of him as a pitcher as well.
