Independent producers, boutique studios veer towards regional cinema for big gains
Producers Anand Pandit and Vinod Bhanushali and Saregama-owned Yoodlee Films are among those betting on Gujarati, Punjabi and Marathi films, where the star fee is lower and the movie-going culture is robust.
Actor John Abraham, who produced the Marathi film Savita Damodar Paranjpe, has expressed interest in backing more films in regional languages. This translates into more reasonable investments and predictable returns at the box office than in Bollywood, which many of these names had first tapped.
'Regional crews by and large manage their time and resources very well. There is frugality and also sensible spending where needed. Because production budgets and marketing spends are cost-effective, the RoI (return on investment) is higher as well," Pandit said.

He recently backed three Gujarati films – Tron Ekka, Fakt Mahilao Maate and Fakt Purusho Maate – all of which managed an RoI of more than 400%, which is unheard of in Hindi cinema.
Pandit referred to regional cinema's rooted, audience-first approach to filmmaking. Franchises such as Baahubali, Pushpa and KGF have clicked big time not because of their big budgets but their storytelling.
'This model obviously makes more business sense," Pandit said, adding that he's also working with Punjabi and Kannada talent.
Hindi films had a 40% share of India's box-office collections in 2024, followed by Telugu films at 20%, according to a report by Ormax Media Pvt Ltd.
Experts including Pandit pointed out that there are various distinct flavours and characteristic styles and post the OTT boom, every language has found its audience. Streaming platforms have reported audiences in the Hindi-speaking belt watching Malayalam, Marathi, Bengali and other language content with subtitles or dubs over the pandemic.
Global potential
While the challenge to tell stories that resonate with diverse demographics remains, the more local the content is, the more global it can potentially be.
On the other hand, the Hindi film business remains fraught with uncertainty. Even big star films such as Salman Khan-starrer Sikandar find limited appeal. Streaming platforms face pressure on profitability, impacting their bullishness and spending in the country, which has led to a slowdown in commissioning content.

On the music front, a decline in listenership on audio streaming platforms and falling revenue for Hindi movie tracks have led to hard negotiations between producers and music labels. All of this while regional cinema remains limited in scale but robust in returns.
'More filmmakers are realising that mass-market cinema is big business and regional language audiences are more loyal compared to Bollywood, which is primarily focused on multiplex cinema," said Yusuf Shaikh, business head of feature films at production and distribution firm Percept Pictures.
Shaikh was quick to point out that streaming platforms are not as keen to acquire films in regional languages like Punjabi and Marathi after their theatrical release.
'A lot of smaller studios and producers try to bundle a few films together, including regional titles, to offer a larger bouquet to streaming platforms. While some are only dipping their toes to test how regional films fare, it has to be seen if this is a strategy sustainable over a long period despite the low costs and need for experimentation," film producer Shariq Patel said.

Dhanush Says Aanand L Rai Invested Own Money To Cast Him In Raanjhanaa: 'They Didn't Have Budget'
Last Updated: Dhanush reveals he nearly turned down Raanjhanaa due to budget issues, and shares how director Aanand L Rai personally backed him to play Kundan. Dhanush might be a big name in Tamil cinema, but back in 2013, when he was gearing up for his Bollywood debut with Raanjhanaa, things weren't exactly smooth sailing. In fact, he nearly walked away from the film altogether. The actor recently looked back on the film during a special fan screening celebrating its 12th anniversary. While Raanjhanaa became a cult favourite over the years, Dhanush admitted that he was close to saying no – and it all came down to the budget. 'At that time, they didn't have the right kind of budget for hiring me as the lead actor. But this man's (Aanand L Rai) passion was so strong that he just wanted me to play Kundan. He could have offered any actor this part and they would have happily come on board. After all, it's such a great part," Dhanush shared, as quoted in SCREEN. The part he's talking about – Kundan – was a lovestruck Varanasi boy whose obsession and heartbreak eventually pull him into the world of politics. According to him, director Aanand L Rai had to take a big risk to make it happen. 'He went against all odds. I don't know I am supposed to say this and I don't care! He invested his own money as well. He went all out (to cast me). He saw Kundan in me and he stayed true to his vision," Dhanush said. Even for a seasoned performer like Dhanush, the pressure was real. He revealed that stepping into the Hindi film world brought a kind of fear he hadn't experienced before. 'I was not scared during my first film. When I was written off, I was not scared. That's how I am. But for the first time, I was scared. I felt responsible. So, I was praying so hard to God that 'Somehow save this man,'" he said, reflecting on the weight of expectations. In the end, the gamble paid off. Raanjhanaa clicked with audiences and critics alike. 'They made a cult classic. It is not the story of Kundan and Zoya. It is the story of two mad men who believed in this," Dhanush added. The film also starred Sonam Kapoor, Abhay Deol, Swara Bhaskar and Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub, and became a defining moment in Aanand L Rai's directorial career. Since Raanjhanaa, Dhanush and Aanand L Rai have teamed up again, including in the 2021 film Atrangi Re, and are working together on Tere Ishq Mein – a film Rai has said is set in 'the same world as Raanjhanaa." A day after becoming the second highest grossing Hindi film of 2025, Mohit Suri's romantic drama Saiyaara has added another feather to its cap. The Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda-starrer has now crossed the Rs 300 crore mark worldwide after adding another Rs 30 crore to its domestic box office collection on the second Sunday. Saiyaara had already crossed Rs 280 crore worldwide on Saturday. Saiyaara India box office collection On its 10th day at the domestic box office, Saiyaara collected Rs 30 crore, yet another jump from its Saturday (day 9) collection of Rs 26.5 crore. The film breached the daily limit of Rs 20 crore on Saturday after two days of earning less than that. Besides day 10, Saiyaara managed to cross the Rs 30 crore mark in a day only last Sunday (day 3) when it earned Rs 35.75 crore, another major spike from its Saturday (day 2) earnings of Rs 26 crore. As per Sacnilk, the box office collection of Saiyaara in India now stands at Rs 247.25 crore. The film has already crossed the domestic box office collections of several superstar films like Akshay Kumar's Housefull 5 (Rs 198.41 crore), Ajay Devgn's Raid 2 (Rs 179.30 crore), and Aamir Khan's Sitaare Zameen Par (Rs 165.85 crore). It's a long way to go before Suri's film can even come close to that record. With fresh competition in Ajay Devgn's Son of Sardaar 2 and Siddhant Chaturvedi and Triptii Dimri-starrer Dhadak 2 coming in this Friday, the progress of Saiyaara is likely to slow down. Saiyaara marks the debut of Ahaan Panday, who's the first cousin of actor Ananya Panday and the nephew of Chunky Panday. It is also the first lead outing for Padda, who first made an impression in the Prime Video India series Big Girls Don't Cry last year. The film also stars actors Geeta Agarwal, Rajesh Kumar, Varun Badola and Shaad Randhawa in prominent roles. Produced by Aditya Chopra's Yash Raj Films, the official logline of the film reads, 'Passionate lovers navigate a rollercoaster romance, facing euphoric highs and crushing lows while desperately clinging to their tumultuous bond.' It also marks the debut of YRF CEO Akshaye Widhani as producer.
